How Do You Control Your Digital Data?

I'm drowning.

I've never been the most orderly person. Now I've got so much 'stuff" eg ebooks, courses, pdfs, copies of threads, sample pages, etc. that I could be accused of being a hoarder. The question is how can I organise all this digital material so I know where to find it, what I can giveaway, what I can sell, what I bought, what was free, etc.To make it worse I've got copies of things in different places! I almost need a matrix filing system.

I'm in the process of organising it all and getting it under control so I can be more efficient and effective.

(Don't even look in my shed! I've still got 34 boxes full of things from when I moved into my house 13 years ago ... ok ... my name is Mel and I am a hoarder)

This is an appeal to the well-organised types out there. Anyone got a really good filing method or system they are prepared to share?

Thanks in advance!

LOL. Take a deep breath, I just cleared my desktop last week.

    First thing you do:
Build a list of folders for your broad topics(entertainment, work, self development, etc.) Then in these organize into categories(dvds, hobbies, niches, time management, etc.) then divide those into categories(action, comedy, poker, trading, game theory, marketing, health, goals, schedule). Then just organize however you like. If you still have a lot of products scattered within these folders just organize through whatever you relate to the most.(favorites(authors, directors, etc.), free, plr, notes, ideas) dunno. Just whatever feels best. Make it personal so you can navigate through it easily

    Hope this helped,
    Aaryn

Thanks Aaryn, practical advice. I'm sure they'll put on my tombstone - "she's getting organised ..." - I seem to be forever doing it but never achieve it. Sounds like mapping out a filing system may be the way to go.

Ooo its a lesson to be learned. I have tons of back doors to all types of different information. What I hate the most is when you try and keep organized, but you come up with an idea and accidentally throw that idea into a folder of something you were just working on xD

I swear I do it all the time. But i'm trying!!

I have this same problem. I had to buy a 500GB external HD to store all of the ebooks and courses I have. I have them fairly organized in 10 main folders, but the problem I run into is when I download new things what to do with them so they don't get lost in all of my old files. So now I have a folder called "New Folder" and once in a while I will move all the files from my New Folder to the organized old files. Another problem I have is keeping track of and organizing all of the bookmarks I have. I also use Roboform and Keepass to store my passwords.

I'm no organization expert but here are my suggestions:
    - Use Roboform or Keepass to store your passwords
    - Get an external hard drive or a flash drive to store and organize your files, and then store the things you use most frequently or that you need now in your documents folder or in a folder on your desktop.
    - Stop downloading and collecting so much stuff!
    - You also might consider buying "Getting Things Done" by David Allen. I've read a lot of good things about that book, I bought it but haven't read it yet.

Thanks highrider .. I'll check out Roboform - have heard of it but didn't know what it did.

And you picked it - stop collecting and start converting - when I can find it all!

      Cheers
