How much is your health worth to you?

After seeing a few posts about what people do throughout their day I thought I would remind many of you the importance of taking care of yourself physically.

I know how much of a commitment it is to become successful online. I also know how much sitting around it involved too.

I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to get off your butt and get the blood flowing. Even a little exercise each day will help you refresh your mind and your body.

Look at it like this, don't you want to be around for a long time to enjoy all the cash you are making online? How can you be serious about your business if you are not serious about your health? Take the time and make sure that you are doing something each day. Hopefully 1 person reads this and decides that they want to take care of themselves to be around a long time for their friends and family.

This is very true, as much time as one may spend blogging, writing articles, social bookmarking, writing copy, skyping clients returning emails..... which are all usually done while sitting, i'd like to add to this post and say, take 15 minutes and raise your heart rate atleast, go for a short walk, jumping jacks, or anything to get yourself moving, your body will appreciate it

Had a car accident 2 years ago and am in constant pain. Been to 20+ doctors. basically none of them can help. If I had a dog in this much pain, I'd put him down.

You value somethings way too little until you lose them.

If you can walk in the sun and enjoy the afternoon, I highly recommend it. (I can walk, but every movement hurts like an ice pick is wiggling around in my spine. Hard to enjoy too much walking. Though if I sit real still in the sun, there are still some good moments.)

If this doesn't show people that they need to appreciate what they have I don't know what will. I am sorry that you are in so much pain, I truly hope that you get better as time goes on.

That's awful. It makes me value the things I never valued before. We take things for granted until we lose 'em.
So how are you feeling now compared to a year ago? Slow recovery? Less pain than before?

So true, Raygun. I'm bad about getting exercise in the winter. In the summer I bike and walk, that's about all my knees will take after years of sports, but it's good exercise. Of course, if I could just cut down on the snacking! It's so easy when you work at home to just go grab a snack. I don't even think about it most of the time.

Man, sorry to hear that Mark. I give you a standing ovation for keeping your sense of humor. For some people, the battle with pain overcomes their sense of humor, but yours is alive and well, even if it is a little too dry for some folks to get sometimes.

  • Staying healthy is of utmost importance. Before I got into working online, I was in a job that would require me to stand & walk short distances, almost 8 hours. Then I got promoted as a Manager. Before I knew it, I fell ill.

The drastic change from a active lifestyle to nearly a couch potato nearly killed me.
I regularly work out now & have also learned ways to keep fit even with a sedentary job.

Here are a few things we need to do to stay fit in the long run:
    * Drink at least a glass of water every hour
    * Ensure you get off your chair & stretch (ideally this should be every 15 mins, but those of us used to working long hours to complete something know this can be annoying & break the thought process, so do it every 2 hours at least)
    * Take deep breaths when possible
    * Take a walk around the block at least once a day, run up 2 sets of stairs

I notice that most people (when discussing exercise) say that they go to the gym or go for a walk or run when they "have time." I too, constantly struggled with work and family obligations to make time to exercise. My big epiphany came when I finally started scheduled gym time and not cancelling or postponing for any reason (except an emergency, of course).

It's very easy to put off exercising because to most people it's not important that it be done today, they can do it tomorrow, or next thursday. Next thing you know, next Thursday is next July and you're staring down the barrel of a stroke, or worse.

I've recently also quit smoking (24 weeks this week) so I've given great thought to my health and well-being. Exercise and stress relief, relaxation time is in my daily routine now and things are going great! I couldn't have done it without my Mother though. God Bless her, she's a school teacher/hypnotherapist and she's helped make great improvements to my life.

Ever since I've had an almost fatal accident during my reckless youth I took my lesson. Actually it was more like an awakening. It was 1966 when we had one of those crazy parties and you could see all these folks cheering and chanting who would make the biggest jump in the pool. People cheering unanimously GO GO GO clapping and there I was sprinting like there's no tomorrow. Who would make the biggest leap? I did. But the pool was empty. A sick joke? Maybe.

I survived the accident with broken ribs and fractures. It was that day when I met the woman of my dreams as if this event glued us together in a bond of feverish love. She dragged me to the hospital. It was then that I knew life was so precious. Ever since me and my future wife trotted in waves off the shore hand in hand loving each other - and that flame holds strong to this very day. Appreciate your health and give love because love you'll get.

While I'm working away at the computer, I allow myself 45 minutes on, 15 off. During that 15 off, I kick on and dance to music depending on the mood I'm in and on what I am writing about.

It is truly amazing how refreshed your body and mind is when you get the blood flowing and the heart pumping.

When I'm deep in thought or typing like a maniac truly focused on the task at hand, time can slip by so quickly so I have a bowl of fresh cut veges and exchange that with fruit at times. I always have the well known fruit and vege mix to drink as well as water.

That's as healthy as it gets in the winter. The summer is a whole different game all together as the sun energizes me more than good food and drink.

The time intervals change greatly as well!

I enjoy my work at home, but that balance for excersize keeps me on track

I love that feeling, the one where you hate it while you are doing it but it rewards you at the end. There is nothing like that high you get when you finish a good workout. I wouldn't trade that for the anything. It is kind of like having a revers hangover.

It goes back to the old saying, healthy body, healthy mind. This includes what we put in our bodies.

I used to and I know a lot of people that live on coffee or tea to keep them going. The thing is, if you can go through the pain of withdrawal from it, you'll find after a week or so, your work output will improve.

Sadly, too many people on this planet won't face the agony of withdrawal, yet they are not happy with where they are.

Makes me wonder - how about you?

good health is paramount, and it ain't that difficult to preserve it, even living in a big city. It is just about your lifestyle:exercise regularly (that boosts your brain performance as well), eat your breakfast (and here no excuses), cut on alcohol, sweets, junk food, think positive, balance between work and life, have a refreshing sleep (and here it matters when you go to bed; the best time is 22pm). that's it.

Sometimes I tend to take my health for granted, as I've pretty much coasted through so far without any major ailments, chronic pain or debilitating issues.

These days, I take better care of myself and make it a point to exercise and do brisk walks at least 3-4 times a week (this helps me mentally recharge as well and increases my overall productivity) and meditate regularly - I find this helps me maintain balance in everything I do, and helps me remain calm in the face of stress and the unpredictable scenarios I encounter in IM and consulting. I also make it a point to get ample sleep every night, and drink green and oolong tea like a maniac, in addition to lots of plain water (I have pretty much cut out sugar/sweeteners from everything I drink).

Speaking of that, has anyone looked into an office set-up that lets you stand up while working--i.e. a high working desk and all? I've even seen a treadmill set-up. It's something to think about, any way.

I couldn't agree more, Ryan. As internet marketers, there is a tendency for us to sit on chairs for extended periods of time without getting up, and this is not a good thing. Instead of doing this, break up your sessions into 30-60 mins long, and get up and walk about in between your sessions, and also ensure that you get regular vigorous exercise daily if possible (running, hiking, swimming, working out) - this will actually increase your mental clarity and help you to be more productive while working!
