Success Secret lesson 7 - The 4 Most Deadly Words

Hi Warriors,

I would like to share about "The 4 Most Deadly Words" by Kevin Wilke, Co-Founder, Nitro-Marketing.

Kevin Wilke say there are 4 words that will guarantee us to be not successful as what we want to be. They are "I already know that".

This is the explaination by Kevin :

Because as soon as you start to think you know everything it closes off your mind, even to the things you don't know.

And it makes it practically impossible to learn new things, grow your awareness, achieve greater successes and breakthroughs.

It keeps you stuck where you are currently at in life, holds you back and may even cause your failure.

And it is a completely ego based mindset. You would rather think you are smart and know everything rather than be open to learning and growing.

Always look to learn from anybody or any situation.

Remove the words "I already know that" from your vocabulary when you go to meetings or seminars, and you'll always end up leaving with stacks of amazing ideas. Not only from what was presented, but all the ideas that are triggered from what people say. By having that open mind it not only allows you to learn new things, but also allows you to think of new ways to use what they are talking about with my business. Or completely new ideas in general.

So what about the things you do already know?

Great question. Let me use an actual example.

Recently the movie The Secret came out. When I started to watch it, you learn early on it is about the Law of Attraction. I already know a lot about that and I could use the 4 Deadly Words and continue to watch it with that closed mindset.

Instead I had the mindset of, "what new things can I learn from this?" They might not be life changing discoveries I make, but even just small subtle enhancements can produce amazing results over the long term.

And I did learn a lot of great new things. I ended up with several pages of notes.

And you know what... that feels great to walk away from something knowing more than you did before. Having new discoveries.

It feels considerably better than walking away thinking I already knew what he was going to be talking about.

Different Effects For Different People.

This shows itself in several different ways.

On the positive... look at anybody who is very successful over the long term, a constant with all of them is their desire to always be learning. They definitely don't have the "I Already Know That" mindset.

On the negative...

First with people who have not had any or little success online. But they have studied everything. They can recite all the lingo and sound like they know everything - and they do think they know it all and are completely closed off to anything that sounds remotely like something they have hard before.

But yet they have little or no success.

Their mindset is ALWAYS going to hold them back until they give it up. Knowing something also means doing it.

Second are the people who have success and see the world as a competition, us versus them. Who is better.

The idea of learning from somebody who you perceive to be less successful you is impossible from your ego based standpoint.

Does that way of thinking really serve you? Anything can be a learning experience if you choose it to be. Anything can trigger new ideas for you

For me, it is quite common to say "I already know that". Now I better don't use that words and listen on what others are trying to say even though I know the subject.

What about you warriors? Do you use these words?

Awesome post. I tend to notice that when I am reading text in a textbook for class I'll come across info and say to myself "I already know this" and skip over it. Bad idea. I often find myself regretting it. Good post.

Maybe I am an exception to the rule but I cannot get enough knowledge about anything. I probably will never be in the position to declare I know it all. I am as attracted to documentaries and news items as a bee is to honey.

The only thing I disagree with you on is that people with knowledge think they know everything. How did they get that knowledge if they did not look for it in response to a belief that they needed to find out what they did not know?

    Good post

Love this post! Thanks for putting it up.

One thing I have tried to add to my life is this simple technique...

Whenever I find myself saying, "I already know that" (or any version of that phrase), I add the phrase, "So, how can I apply it?" or, "So, how can I make it work for me?"

If I already know something I like asking a question about whether or not I'm putting that knowledge to work in my life.

This does two things for me: 1) It checks my arrogance at the door and causes me to think about whether or not I'm using the knowledge I have. 2) It gives me a moment to think on whether or not I really do know it and what I'm doing about it.

I don't understand the desires and actions of "I already know that" folks who seem to be predisposed to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for a new automobile or a night on the town. Yet, these same folks are unwilling to invest the time effort, or money required for self-learning, which can lead to the greater personal and career achievements that supports their dreamed of definition of success.

Society, I believe, has consistently neglected to teach young people "how-to" learn effectively, to define what they want from life, to set effective, life supportive goals or "how-to" develop plans to achieve their goals. The real affront is that many of society's "I already know that" folks generally overlook the fact that such vital, life supportive activities even exist.

Could that be why so many young people, upon working so hard to learn what they have been TOLD to learn, scratch their heads upon graduating from high school and/or college and ask themselves, "Okay, now what?" Then, many of the graduates begin pursuing a career totally detached from their field of study because society says, "Get out there as soon as you can and make as much money as you can if you want to be accepted by us."

What an iniquity the non-achievers of society have perpetrated and continue to on our young people. Society encourages them to work their 'buns' off to get to that accepted degree, only to watch them feel down-hearted because they were never taught "how-to" identify, plan for and implement their dreams. Teaching young people "how-to" learn and plan for their future, before we teach them the "what-to's" is, I believe, the answer.

There is no way that anyone can adequately compensate you for the time you spend in acquiring new knowledge, skills or awareness. It is never going to be today again and, unfortunately, we live in a distracting culture. There is always something that screams for our attention sports on television, Happy Hour after work, Sunday brunch, household chores, career responsibilities and much more. How, then, can you expect to study and acquire the knowledge and skills of competence?

Desire to live your sunrises of opportunity in your personal and career life demands that you make the commitment necessary to play, and win, in the most exciting game of them all - the game of your future. Knowing how to learn fast, repetitive study (the anti-"I already know that"), retain new knowledge and master new skills is essential for rapid personal growth and achievement. Superior earnings, goal achievements and maximizing your sunrises of opportunities blossom from superior learning abilities.

I'd like to add some other Deadly Words to this list if I may...

I can't. The two most deadliest words in the world. Of course you can! There is always a way. Might be a wee bit odd, might not fit your preconceived way to do, but you always can, somehow.

I'll try. These are also deadly. They imply you could succeed - but think about it. This is an enabling phrase: I'm gonna fail but if I can say I tried, then it's okay to fail. Not good!

        Any other thoughts?

Thanks, vorales, for the success lesson. A really valuable lesson which taught us to "Listen more & speak less", after all we have two ears and one mouth.

There is a story which speaks the same morale.

A pigeon wanted to build its own nest, but did not know how to do it. The sparrow agreed to help it. The sparrow started the lesson, and mid-way the pigeon said "I know how to do it!" and flew away. It tried to make the nest and could not do so and returned to the sparrow to learn again.

The sparrow again started teaching from the beginning, but before the sparrow could finish teaching, the pigeon flew away to make its' own nest. This happened many times and the sparrow stopped teaching the pigeon and till date, it can not make its own nest.
            Hence as they say:
            • "Patience is bitter, but its fruits are sweet."
            • "An impatient person learns nothing."

            Sincere thanks once more.

dorothydot, you did hit the nail right on its head, those are the more commonly used words.

        WebVanity, right on, great additions!

Please may I add a few more as follows:
        • If
        • But

If I were rich, I could...
        I can do this, but....

As my boss had once told me, "I am giving you work, and I do not want to hear any 'if'(s) or 'but'(s). Just tell whether you can do it, or not; simply 'yes' or 'no'."

These words really hit me on the head and since then I try not to use them, but am hardly successful. Anyway, am still trying.

          Hello Omari Taylor here,

Great Post!!! I totally agree. Using those 4 words is the worst thing you could and would definitely stunt you growth. Not just online either but in life. Being close minded and thinking you know everything kills your creativeness. You don't think about or learn new things because you think you know it all. I know a lot of people like that, but entrepreneurs are different type of people and must continue to be creative and have an open mind if they want to be successful.

Great post! Great reminder for me. As a trainer and speaker, I myself also attended many seminars and workshops conducted by others, I must say some contents are repeated.

I have to remind myself not to go into the EGO mode, but hear what the other trainers have to say. Looking for distinction is really what kept my ego down.

I must admit there are times, where my EGO flies high. I am guilty of that. Thank you for the reminder.

As an engineer for many years the "I already know that" has often plagued me. Your lesson on learning something by careful listening is something I've been trying hard to do for several years, but when someone tells me something that defies physics I have a hard time listening. It's probably because I take things too literally when people say something rather than trying to understand what they really mean. Thanks for the teaching a 52 year old engineer set in his ways on how to look at things in a different way.

It is human to think when one comes across a familiar matter that he knows it already. As you have put it, the more one thinks he knows something, the more he tends to ignore it and he will not get the depth of the same. His will be a superficial knowledge which is very dangerous. It shows his ignorance and I feel it is nothing wrong wanting to learn more of anything even if I know something of it. There is no fathom to anything. Your thirst should be to learn more and more and more.

The important thing is to apply the knowledge that they possess. Most people know what to do but they don't do that. It makes them no different from people who do not know anything.
