Strengths vs Weaknesses Debate this weekend

I was discussing this with somebody this weekend. Some people say that a majority of your effort should be spent on emphasizing your strengths. Others say a majority of your time should be spent on improving your weaknesses.

Obviously you cant spend a majority of your time on both. Which should you spend more time on or should it be split equally, in your opinion?

What do you think is the better route to go?

I'm naturally going to say the must be worked on equally to be most effective.

Your strengths will get you nowhere if you have leaks because all of you work will just fall out of the other side...but in the same sense what good is eliminating leaks when you have no reason to fill in the gaps?

So...my process personally is looking like this in the long haul...I've been going through The Law of Success which is great for this.

    1. I'm going to bridge my weaknesses but not perfect them.

    2. I will then learn how and when to properly use my strengths.

    3. I will then learn from first hand experience. Try my best, learn from my mistakes and adjust accordingly....

This is the #1 strategy in poker by the way

I would say be aware of your weaknesses and emphasize your strengths.

If you know which areas you are weak, try to find a way to compensate.

For example, I am weak in the writing area, but I am pretty creative.

Solution, I made a youtube video, caught the media's attention, then partnered up with an English Ph.D to write my book.

I would have written a piece of crap if I wrote it myself, but since I was aware of my weakness, then we were able to make something great.

I do think you need to look at every mistake that you make, and see what you can learn from it. I am a believer that things happen for reasons.

I fail a lot, but if you're not failing, your not trying. Just don't fail 2 times doing the same thing.

So I say focus on your strenghts, but don't be blind to your weakness'

Ahh that was how I felt. You should emphasize your strengths and get other people to fill in the gaps where you are weak. But as you both point out, you must keep your weaknesses in mind.

Some people feel its very important to focus on bringing your weaknesses up to speed with your strengths. Two different philosophies I guess

That's not exactly what I meant by bridging...it just means management of your weaknesses...exactly what dman was saying just in a different style...be aware and bridge...I have more time on my hands so I choose to directly engage in not being limited by my weaknesses and to let my strength shine....it's the same concept really...I just choose to build a stronger foundation to work with while I have the opportunity...doesn't mean you have to align your strengths and weaknesses...just means you need to be aware of how they limit you and to take action to eliminate the limitation.

It is the same exact philosphy just in a different framework...time is on my side...why waste it? I've tended to notice that the bridging of my weaknesses, for example copywriting, has helped me in my overall marketing as well as product creation....I'm talking about 4 digit products....when I bridge my weaknesses at the source my strengths sky rocket as a result.

I agree, you need to work on what you do really well and get the rest outsourced. I know that sounds really simple, but it is so true. You have to do what really makes you special and make sure that you get to be the best at it. The rest will just fall in to place.

Raygun. Yes that what my view was. But for beginners if they don't have the capital or capability to outsource for whatever reason, then the trick is being the jack of all trades until you can get capital and start outsourcing those weak spots.

But then again, I'm sure there are plenty of weaknesses that cannot be outsourced

Agree with RayGun and Kenster 100%

As a newbie myself, iv realised that your strengths will give you confidence to launch into the unknown depths of IM with a purpose and knowning that there IS something I can work on.

Your weaknesses can then be bridged via people who are strong in that area eg. article writing or ebook cover design outsourcing.

If capital is low, then do what you can, keep an abundance mindset, and remember that where ever therz an obstacle, therz always a solution. Dont give up.

I would say it is a little of both. Do not dwell too much on your weaknesses because it will only tire you. But then you must face them because you are going to encounter a situation that involves your weaknesses soon enough. So here is my take on it.

Do not forget about your strengths and overcome your weaknesses in baby steps.
