Starting a Business? Rant #1 - Of Donkeys, Decisions and Information Overload

"We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road.
They get run over."
- Aneurin Bevan

Imagine a donkey, comfortable in his stable, starting to feel hungry. There are two appetising piles of hay just a few feet away. One pile is to the left, one to the right, neither pile is closer than the other. They both contain exactly the same amount of hay, are both equally nourishing and equally tasty.

Which bowl of hay should the donkey eat and why?

This question (a slightly modified version of Buridan's Ass) has perplexed philosophers for millennia, but it is a useful fable regarding indecision. If the donkey cannot find a reason to choose one pile over the other (and there is no rational reason why one should be preferred), then the animal will starve to death.

Sometimes you have to stop weighing up the options and make a move. How would a baby ever learn to walk without taking a step?

A recent neuroscience experiment into the speed of thought has measured the time taken for a monkey to recognise a picture at around 0.03 seconds. The time taken for human beings to make a decision is far quicker than this. However, we delay in acting upon this decision because the conscious mind suffers with doubt.

Have you ever had someone ask you for your opinion, but it is obvious they are just looking for confirmation of theirs? People will seek out approval for their choices, but most likely take the action they have decided upon regardless of your advice.

If they have made their decision, why are they wasting time asking you? The doubts in our conscious mind convince us that we are not ready, and we require more information before acting on any decisions. Are you guilty of this?

Why are you reading an internet marketing forum if you aren't going to succeed in internet marketing?

Do you find yourself continually looking for new methods, strategies and tips? Are you really improving your chance of success? The truth is you are only listening to that little nervous voice in your head. You know the one I mean, it's the one that says:

"This'll never work... You can't do that... What if it all goes wrong?"

This voice has you searching for more information, attempting to delay the inevitable negative emotions when your latest venture fails as it always expected.

Procrastination is effectively cancellation.

Don't listen to that silly little nuisance. It is not the voice of a wise old sage, advising you of imminent catastrophe, it's an infantile child frightened of the dark. It wants your to comfort it, to stay by it's bedside, not realising that you could easily walk to the doorway and turn the light on.

Whenever you find yourself continually researching and requesting more information - Stop!

You are about to set upon a journey. It's prudent to have a vague idea of where the path leads and be sure that's where you want to go. But it is not necessary to know how to overcome every obstruction you'll find on the way. Expect to encounter problems you never expected, difficulties you could never plan for, so stop trying to plan for them!

If the choice leads to where you want to go, then set your mind upon starting the journey. All the information you need to know now is how to take the next step - worry about the other issues later! Are there any obstacles preventing your progress? Fix those (and only those) then move on!

But what if you make a mistake or have a set back? Great! There is an old joke:

"What do you call a donkey with only three legs? A wonkey!"

Yes, I can hear you groan as I type (it's about to get worse), but consider how a wonkey would cope with the two piles of hay? It would definitely lean towards one pile!

So stop looking for more information. Choose one of the piles of hay, you'll really enjoy the satisfying taste, so what if the other may be better, this one is good enough for now. Are you hungry?

Get enough information to take a step. Then take it.

Go on, get moving!

    Great Post Adam!!

Yes, the ability to take action is one of the greatest traits successful people have. You are very right in adding that in addition to taking action, you also need to get all the information you can to make an informed decision.

      That's a great post Adam!

Taking action is what EVERY successful person in life has done at some stage in their lives. When have you ever met a successful person who hasn't took action? NEVER!! It just hasn't happened.

I'm not talking about people born into wealth or having it given to them on a silver platter, i'm talking about the real successful people who have worked from the ground up to become highly successful and wealthy.

Obviously, building your knowledge on a subject is very important but being overloaded with knowledge and ideas from all different directions just causes frustration and confusion.

The ideal way is to use what you have learnt in a systematic way. Try one idea at a time, if that doesn't work move onto the next. NEVER try to have multiple things on the go at once, unless your outsourcing, because you won't be able to give 100% to any of them.

Wonderfully put! I fully endorse the part where you wrote, "Get enough information to take a step. Then take it." I can't agree more with that. If you need information, make sure you know exactly what you need, then ask. Once you have an idea of how to do it, then make the step. If you fall into a pitfall, so be it. The next step is trying to get out, then get on with your original plan.

Thanks to all for their words of encouragement! I'm much more used to giving lessons through conversation than typing an article, so this takes some getting used to. Unfortunately it takes a little longer for me to respond to any questions, but here they are...

CFOservices - Gathering the information to make an informed decision is important, but how do you know when you have enough information? Most people procrastinate, continually searching for more information, effectively making excuses so they don't have to fail. "If you never try, you'll never fail." No. If you never try you have already failed. Work out what the next step is and how to do it. Then move. Don't worry about further down the line, you'll learn more along the way. At least if you step you know that you can move, and you can change direction anytime you want.

I do agree that an informed decision is important; you'd be very disappointed to learn you've made so many great strides in the wrong direction! It's much easier to learn a new habit, than to unlearn a bad habit. But how do we know which direction to move? I'll get to that in a future post...

Dayton Keeran - I completely agree with your systematic approach. Far too many people are unprofessional and don't follow a logical system. If a circuit board is not working correctly a technician will carefully and systematically test each component, before moving on to the soldering, etc. Testing in a logical progressive manner ensures you don't miss anything. Explore all avenues, the only way to guarantee winning the lottery is to by a ticket with every combination numbers!

I love your comment about one thing at a time and giving 100%, there is an old Chinese proverb: He who chases two rabbits, catches neither one.

SilentX - A great post, with a hidden gem of wisdom: "If you need information, make sure you know exactly what you need, then ask." The importance of asking the right questions cannot be understated. The entire world believed in the physics of Newton, but a young man named Albert Einstein couldn't get over one single issue: What would it be like to ride on a beam of light? The Special Theory of Relativity, a work of genius that truly changed the world, only came about because of Einstein's ability to ask the right question. (I'm sure I tweeted on this subject recently.)

Wealthy in Net - For people who usually behave like what Dr Belbin calls "Plants", continuing to run a business is much more difficult than starting it. Starting a business is new and exciting, but continuing can get monotonous. This can happen if your business is not your passion (see another post Starting a Business Rant #2), or if your passion loses your interest and becomes your job. I'm planning to explain how to prevent this and stay motivated soon, but that's further down the path. If you're only thinking of starting a business you don't need to know that yet! Make a business plan, that's step one, we'll worry about keeping motivation later.

      Excellent Post! Thank You

I picked up this concept years ago ...

"If you do not make a decision, that in itself is a decision. Now you have another decision and so on and so on".

A wrong decision is better than no decision...You can always adjust later.

      IMHO

Thanks Ankur and Winlin, your comments are appreciated!

The poll was intended to be ironic, I was hoping everyone would vote "unsure"!

As I tweeted recently, "Indecision is making the decision to surrender control." Personally I prefer to be empowered, to take control and make my own decisions. Decisions are only ever wrong or right in hindsight, and I haven't had enough hindsight to see the full outcome of my decisions yet!

So far, my decisions have lead me here. Could it have been better? Could it have been worse? Of course! But at least it's my choice.

And now I'm responsible for making it work...
