What Tiger Woods can teach and show us

I wrote this blog post with some inspiration from Tiger Woods' statement/appology/media frenzy.

I realize the media has a hay-day with it, but really behind all of this is a human being going through TREMENDOUS growth. It is perhaps the hardest kind of growth too because it has shattered his values and it's coupled by being on display for literally the entire world.

It is a trying time for Tiger, and his words speak a lot to his own personal growth. I encourage you to read it and grow from it. There are excerpts in my most recent blog post.

I think he should not apologize because it is his personal life, he can do whatever he wants to do with his life. No one should dictate on how people should live their life. It's all about choices and he chooses to go that way and people misunderstood it. Humans are humans.

Ehhh, I sort of feel like you you have some moral obligation to be a role model when you brand yourself as such. And when a role model, there is no difference between personal and professional life. I do believe it stinks to not have privacy in your personal life, but that's something that comes with being one of the greatest atheletes.

I like to give everybody a second chance. I'm much harder on the third chance though!

I'm not sure I can agree with this. Humans are humans and we make decisions sure, but we are not little islands in a sea of other islands. We are social beings and we have to interact with others to survive, like it or not. That means that our decisions do affect others and we have to take these things into consideration. I'm not saying that people don't deserve a second chance. I agree with Kenster that second chances are necessary, and maybe even third and fourth, but you lose credibility each time you need another chance. I never want to give up on people. It's just not a very humanitarian thing to do. Whether its an adulterer or a serial killer, I believe people can change if they want to (but they definitely need to want to before any change is possible).

I think we can all agree, Tiger Woods got way too hyped in the media. But, that doesn't mean he doesn't have obligations to people besides himself and his wife. He is a public figure, like it or not, he signed up for the road show. You can't get the money from being a top athlete without sacrificing a level of privacy in your personal life. Deal with it how you may, people are going to be interested in you.

I'll stop the rant. But I'd also like to add that I don't mean to say that his adulteration is necessarily going to affect the public at large and that he needs to apologize for this to us. However, if he wants to keep some remnant of his public image, he needs to play the game and at least pretend to be sorry to us. Whether we buy it or not (or even care) is a different question.
