How Do You Overcome Failure?

We all know that to achieve success we
will most likely face failures.

In fact, most success literature states
that the only way to succeed is through
failure.

Therefore, we reach success not by
avoiding it, but instead by overcoming it.

How do you overcome "Failure" (or, as I
call it, temporary obstacle)?

What methods do you use? Affirmations?
Positive thinking? etc..

Good question BillMarket. I've learned to overcome failure by changing my perspective about it, in other words, how I see failure. I used to take failure personally and get down on myself. This was really foolish, since failure is the only way to success.

So what I do now is to view failure as just an "event" - and not a person. That helps me to avoid personalizing it.

Also, I've accepted failure as the route to success, so I learn from it, make adjustments, dust myself off and try again (and again and again). Failure is not something I'm scared of anymore, and so I don't try to avoid it by paralysis and non-action. Of course, I don't want to fail, but after doing my best to plan, I just take action as quickly as possible, make my mistakes FAST, and then learn and move on.

Thats my way of coping with it anyway. Hope that helps.

PS - by the way, we learned to be scared of failure and avoid it at all cost when we were in school. School taught us to avoid failure (remember those big RED MARKS all over your term paper or tests when you made mistakes?) School is terrible for teaching kids never to make mistakes. Successful business people on the other hand, are not afraid of making mistakes or failing - its how they build big businesses!

Thats why most successful business people were usually the C students. They made lots of mistakes, and actually learned not to be afraid of them!!

  • "Failure" does not exist. People are taught that there is a failure and that it is something "bad." Truth is that something like that in reality does not exist, but only in our mind.

Outcome of each of our actions can be:

    1. what we want,

    2. or different.

That's all. There is no failure and success. There is only change, and their outcomes.

I've always had a problem with not wanting to fail, which ultimately resulted in me taking little action or risks. This of course, is not the way to run a business.

The best thing that's working for me is viewing 'failure' as learning and practice. Instead of thinking, "Oh, this ad campaign failed," I'm starting to see that it wasn't a failure, I just learned a few things that didn't work. The only real failure is failing to take action IMO.

I simply keep working until results begin to appear, like they are right now. I'm starting to get good traffic to a Squidoo lens that I created about two days ago. This is especially encouraging, since my other lenses didn't pull in any traffic. So the results are beginning to arrive, slowly but surely. My patience won out!

      Love it!

I tell my kids all the time that the world is made up of the stuff we want, and the stuff we don't want (failure). To get the stuff we want, we just have to change the other stuff.

Failure and success are both just perspectives on the way things are panning out. If you are doing what you love, everything is just a lesson along the path, part of the learning curve.

Failure is in the eye of the beholder / There is no such thing as failure

^^ pick your cheesy motivational quote

But really, I think it is true.

When I was starting out people laughed at the money I lost, the time I spent to make little return, asked me why I was bothering etc etc.

I didn't even see it as failure though.

I knew I was on a path, and I was learning a lot and getting better... these failures built up to quite a decent level of success so far, and no one is laughing anymore

Failure is a given, not a privilege.

In the words of Master Yoda (and modified)

      Fail?

      There is no Fail!

      Do or Do not!

Look, I are an Engineer (Chemical to be specific). I went into a role as a doer/seller in consulting after 20 years in industry. Selling to me was getting a capital appropriation to upgrade/modify the facility.

After 6 months of abysmal work gathering, things started to hit. I had to ask myself each time after a marketing call what I did right and what I could do better. With a very patient boss, I started hitting on all cylinders. Remember, I was having meetings two and three times each week with no results (in the form of contracts). Get up, dust off, yell "NEXT!"

For 2009, I sold 1.5 times my goal of $200,000! And that was with a really crappy economy. Not only did I keep myself busy (79% billable) but I kept several others out off the unemployment lines.

I am not saying this to brag, but to tell you that if you think failure, you will fail. If you look at each and every experience as a learning experience, you will learn and get better. Henry Ford said it best - Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.

Now get off your butt, drop the talk of failure and do it! <- that is what you will look like with my steel toed boot kicking you butt if you don't stop whining!

I think that failure sometimes is difficult to overcome because people get so frustrated when things don't go a certain way. Try and Try Again is what people say... but sometimes someone may not be good at a certain thing... or it's not for them...

I remember when I was younger and was in school... some classes stuck and some didn't. I would constantly study and study to try to do well and it just wasn't happenning... even had tutors... I guess those subjects just weren't for me...

Plus, with all these "make money fast" schemes that are online now, people are mainly concerned with getting the money fast rather than totally understanding the concept and I think when that happens, failure happens.

I try to remind myself that the more failures I encounter means that I am up against a problem that most people probably run into when doing what I'm doing. Therefore, if I can overcome this problem that means I am that much farther ahead of an entire group of people that gave up after that step. The more problems I encounter, the further I get, and the more knowledgeable I become, which makes my knowledge more and more marketable and profitable

I read and watch stories of real life failures who have have been beaten many times over through adversity and devastation but have risen from the ashes time and time for a final triumph.

One such great video I watched is "Success is a Journey" by Brian Tracy. In this video Brian shares his own experience about how he 'barely' crossed the Sahara many years ago. Then there is the story of President Lincoln.

Whenever I hit a brick wall I quickly divert my attention to those who have had a hundred times worse and still managed to swim across the lava flow (so to speak).

Failure is only something we try and it doesnt go on as expected, if we say I failed to accomplish something its cool we can try again and get it done.

The problem is when you say I am a Failure, then thats damaging, none of us is a failure but all of us has failed before, and there is no man who has seen success without seeing failure before.

This is a great thread! Very thought provoking.

You know, when I think of the concept of success/failure, it makes me think of money-hungry get-rich-quick-types who have to be seen driving the right car, wearing the right clothes, dripping with jewelry, sipping the right drink, blah blah blah. Most of those images are media fabricated, that are actually marketing techniques and social manipulation intended to funnel money into certain people's wallets. So to me, many times success/failure is someone else's measurement.

Sometimes you have to extricate yourself from things or abandon projects because they just don't make sense or don't contribute to happiness and well-being. In those cases, I don't consider that failure or giving up. I consider that learning, making adjustments and moving forward.

But everyone has their own internal yardstick.

Some think that winning at everything = success, but to blindly have to win "just because" could be the characteristic of a not-so-bright person. Someone who works the same job for forty years can be successful in terms of benefits, savings, stability, etc., but someone else can view this as staying in the same job out of fear.

So first, I think keeping one's own counsel on the subject is paramount.

If I personally feel like I've failed, I review what occurred and try to extract the lesson from it. Then if I still feel the avenue is viable and a path I should continue pursuing, I pick myself up, brush myself off and try again. Sometimes, I need a break before I try again and sometimes that break can span significant amounts of time.

I firmly believe in my "second wind."

If I can keep myself from slapping on the "failure" label, or using other people's yardsticks to judge myself, many times all I need is my second wind to carry me to the goal.

I overcome failure by not taking it personally. EVERY successful person in life has had at least one major failure (probably many more). The reason they became successful though is because they never gave up. They never took that failure as a sign of 'they can't ever succeed'. They put it behind them and learned from that experience.

Look at Bill Gates or Richard Branson, they have a list of failures to their names, big and small, but NEVER gave up. Look at them now! I overcome failure by staying positive, believing in what i am doing and working hard.

Just because something doesn't work, it doesn't mean it's a failure. You just gotta think about things in a new way and perservere. NEVER GIVE UP! Thinking your a failure is a guaranteed way to never succeed, just change the mindset and start again.

Failure is not achieving what you thought you were trying to accomplish.

The steps you follow to reach the goal you set for yourself.

What if you don't know exactly where you are going but do it anyway, is that failure too?

How many of us are making it up as we go each and everyday to feel like we are successful in some way?

So is success actually reaching your goal? I think it isn't. I think success is the act of NOT achieving your stated goal many times over as fast as you can by taking decisive focused action even if you don't know what your doing.

if we move forward with conviction toward our dreams we can only achieve success that will transform ourselves into the people we hope to be.

I make "Persistence" by buzz word.

Failure is opportunity, but when the failure is particularly bitter, or stinging it's tough to see it as an opportunity. This is where persistence comes in. By decided to keep going no matter what you're programmed to....keep going. The person who keeps going never quits until the goal is reached. You also see the seed of equivalent benefit much quicker than the average person. Since you're focused on moving forward you only stick around to take the positive and move on.

To put it in street terms, you never stay down.

You get back up, and through your experience you learn and persist.

All platitudes aside, I firmly believe the vast majority of our goals, no matter how lofty, are achievable. The mistakes made along the way in pursuit of those goals are not signs of inadequacy merely a testament to our persistence.

Failure is not to be overcome, it is part of life like sleeping. You get up and start your day over again.

If you see failure as some big scary thing, use the Japanese principle of kaizen to make small improvements each day that lead to giant leaps in success.

I forgot who said it but to paraphrase; people tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in the short term, and underestimate what they can accomplish in the long term.

This fact is why kaizen is so powerful. Try it.

The thought of giving up is tempting, especially when we have failed over and over again. But who knows that maybe you are only one step away from success? Will you waste the long journey you have passed when you are already so close to your destination? So hold on tight and don’t give up. If you look at this way failure actually becomes a success...

Back when I was doing door-to-door sales, i figured that every other 10-15 doors i knocked on and gave them the spiel they'd convert into a sale... After a while everytime I got the door banged in my face I was actually happy, 'cause I was 1 door closer to success... So I was more than glad to knock one more door, and if I got rejected I knew that I was getting closer to that one sale...

Thankfully, I managed to keep that mindset when I did got started in IM and then onto coaching and consulting... Hope that helps.

My approach to failure had come from Robert Schuller coined statement that "failure is not final and success is never ending".
This has helped me to see situation as a part of the whole. Nothing is total in itself, but just the combination of all things taking place in my life all together.

I sit back, look at the whole issue again, learn that which i need to learn, correct myself where necessary, restrategize and go after it again it is working.
For every form of failure is a statement to learn something thta is necessary for the desired success.

"Warriors do not win victories by beating their heads against walls, but by overtaking the walls. Warriors jump over walls; they don't demolish them." by Carlos Castaneda

Act like a warrior. Failure doesn't exist for warriors. It is a man-made indulgence. If a warrior fails he dies. So it's not an option. Life is an ongoing struggle. If you don't succeed right away the struggle isn't finished.
If you aquire "the mood of a warrior" you'll be much more successful because you should not underestimate how much energy it costs to indulge in failure.

Another great warriors quote ik like:

"When a warrior makes the decision to take action, he should be prepared to die. If he is prepared to die, there shouldn't be any pitfalls, any unwelcome surprises, any unnecessary acts. Everything should gently fall into place because he is expecting nothing."

The simplest way to overcome failure
is by not associating it to your sense
    of worth.

If you fail once at a certain task, that
doesn't mean that you've failed at
    life.

Also ensure that there are a multiple no
of activities that you are involved in.

If there is only one thing you do in life
(e.g. your business) and you fail at that
once, then it can be a big blow.

But if you have a lot of interests and you
fail at one of them, it's not that much
    of a big deal.

Case in point: Remember the last tennis/soccer
match that you lost. Did it hurt really bad?
No, because you are not a professional player
so you do not associate your sense of worth
    to the game.

Similarly do not associate who you are with
your work, your projects and your business.

    Cheers.

I've learned so much from reading this thread that it will take me a month of Sundays to get through it all...

I find it's easiest to overcome failure if you develop the mindset that no matter what, you'll never quit! Giving up is a sure sign that all hope is lost.

I take great comfort in my friends and family being behind me 100% and helping me to dust myself off when I slip and fall. I could never do it alone.

I just don't believe in failure, I believe in mistakes but I learn from them and keep going with my goals. Rather focus on something than time passing by.

That's a good question and trust me I meet a lot of failure because of my procrastination.

But generally I just learn from it and then put it down as a note and to the back of my mind. Then structure my new plan to fix the fialure.

I think that the more you think the less likely you are to do something (unless of course it only consists of positive thinking). I will take an idea or what I have learned and test it before questioning it. If I start by questioning it, I won't end up taking action. It's best to take action no matter how much you know and then judge the end result. But don't judge to soon cause you just might have almost made it to the top. After 2 years of internet marketing struggle I'm finally making money. I finally put trust in those that taught me and took action. Your mind is the most powerful or the weakest. Just take ACTION then judge the end result whether you think its counterproductive or not you will learn.

      @Jelder1 Hiya,

How did you start making money after two years. I really want someone that I can trust who will teach me a system that I can invest in towards success. I've been on it since November and I'm obssessed with Making it!

In response to the thread question.
I overcome failure by remembering the words of Napoleon Hill, that "whatever the man can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve". It is a mantra that I live by and I always remind myself that my success or failure starts and ends in my mind and what I CAN achieve in life is also limited by my own beliefs.

I also pray alot TOO, some folks call it meditation!.

"Failure" in the moment leads to success in the end.
That is, as long as the person learns from the failure, adjusts his perception of reality and cause/effect, and carries on in a new direction.
There is a flip side, too. How many people have succeeded enormously in the moment, but didn't realize it as success and therefore never followed through?

Ah, to overcome failure, why would we want to do that? If we ceased to fail, we would cease to learn! With every failure, we learn something new which only helps us to move forward toward our goal. Life is full of failure, heartbreak, successes, and love. Just roll with it and in the end you will be a better person for it.

I myself have failed many time before. At one point i gave up. But after reading about inspiring quotes/success quotes, it gave me a more moral and encouragement to continue. It does help i can assure you that. It is about having a positive mindset. Just keep your thinking and dream positive. Whenever negative thoughts came up, try to avoid and get it out of your mind immediately.

Honestly, failures are not bad at all. If you can learn from your mistakes and improve it, success sure will be well on your way. It is important to break your bad habits/thinkings if you want to succeed.

I wrote about a quote that I heard a long time ago from the immortal Zig Ziglar in another forum, but there is another little story that he tells about his days as a door-to-door salesman that fits right in with this thread's topic. But, before I give you the story I just wanted to say that I'm sure that everyone has heard the saying; "One of the best ways to overcome failure is to simply fail fast."

Now, back to Zig, and how the above saying ties in with with his story.

    Zig,

"You know, before I was a motivational speaker I used to be a door-to-door salesman. And in my years on the streets, I became my company's top salesman for 5 years running.

And the reason why? While other salesman were going out and canvasing... they would get to a neighborhood or business park, and hit a few homes or businesses, get a few "NOs" and become dejected and just quit. And as the day went on they saw less and less prospects, because they just didn't want to hear the word "NO."

One day I found out a little secret. I discovered that the more "NOs" I received, the more sales I made. Now at first, this doesn't make sense when you hearing it for the first time, but that's what happened.

You see, when I hit a neighborhood or a business park, I talked to anybody and everybody, and each time I got a "NO" I became more excited. That's right, I got more excited. Because I knew that a "YES" was just around the corner.

And a couple more "NOs" and the very next prospect -Bingo- I got a "YES". Then I got a "NO"... then I got another "YES", and another "YES", and another "YES". I became scared because to my thinking those three "YESs" in a row was messing up my averages.

On my third year I really studied what was going on. And I discovered that I was just failing a lot faster than everyone else. While those other bozos, were out getting a few "NOs" and failing a little bit. I was racking up a mountain of "NOs" and becoming a failing fool.

But, of course that just meant that I was seeing way more prospects then all the salesman in my company combined. So... what I'm trying to say is just this; " Collect as many "NO"s as you can. Try to fail more that anyone you know, and out of your failures - you will be carving out more successes than anyone you know."

THATS TRUE, FAILURE IS ONLY TEMPORARY, IF YOU HAVE A DEFINITE PURPOSE OF WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO, STICK TO IT...

KEEP THE FAITH, THE DESIRE, WRITE PLANS THAT YOU RECIEVE AND TAKE ACTION TO EVERY PLAN YOU RECIEVE....

BEST THING TO DO IS TO DO DAILY VIZUALIZATION, REMEBER MAYBE WHAT YOUR GOAL IS BIG TO YOURSELF, BUT TO THE UNIVERSE ITS NOT BIG...

HOW YOU ATTRACTED $1 IS THE SAME AS $10000 BECAUSE THE UNIVERSE IS TRUELY ABUNDANT, JUST HAVE FAITH AND DESIRE, SUCCESS WILL FOLLOW

The beauty of the internet is that it's totally passive, something that nobody around me seems to get. They want money NOW. They don't want to make the short term sacrifice for future financial freedom, something a job can never provide.

Bottom line--it might take some short term sacrifice, but the long term gains are going to be worth it. I'm not making a full time income yet, but I'm well on my way. If you're struggling to make money online, just remember that the long term benefits (100% financial freedom) are WELL WORTH it.

I do a lot of things. I play videogames, listen to music, work out, pray, anything to distract my mind from the painful stress of something not working the way it should.

As your failures accumulate, oddly enough, so do your successes! Even though I have been struggling to make a consistent income on my websites this past week, just today I woke up to 120 dollars in my Clickbank account, so life can't be all failures if you are persistent!

Making money on a business can be a lot like growing seeds into crops. If you plant just one or two seeds, you are preparing for failure. But if you plant hundreds of seeds a.k.a. hundreds of sites, blogs, squidoo lenses, articles etc etc, you will watch as the seeds that are planted best will sprout and grow and yield up crops for you and your family, a.k.a. money .

Here is a great quote for you to remember if you are failing:

"An expert is a person who has made every possible mistake within his or her field"

Neils Bohr, Danish Scientist and Nobel Laureate

Just remember, you having the courage to fail over and over until you succeed makes you that much better and more successful than the average person. Keep your chin up and don't let your mistakes push you back!

My first 2 weeks in, I blew around $300+ on various programs, guides, etc on IM and gave up after not seeing any results. I really felt like a complete failure for blowing all that money for nothing.

I got yelled at during work the following monday and that got me back on track.

Now that I learned a lot more from all my mistakes and failures, I'm getting closer to making that first dollar. I haven't gotten it yet, but I'm confident I will in Sept.

To overcome Failure you must failed over and over again until such time you don't know what is the meaning of Failure anymore because you already succeed in your life.

Just think about it as a normal process of life, so what if you failed then go on with your life and don't stop until you finally meet success. Don't over think Failure.
