Can success be taught?

People at make it while being young seem to have that "something" that makes success possible. Is that a natural ability or can it be learned? Do you think it is a result of their environment or something they were born with?

I could ask the very same about those that continue to try but fail at everything. Is that something they were born with or learned behavior?

    Absolutely 100% no.

You can be the best educated person in the world, with limitless resources - but if you don't take action you will be no better off than anyone else.

Success is purely self-driven in my opinion.

Self driven but can still be taught. You can learn self-discipline, self-motivation and all the necessary ingredients to success if you want to. You can train your mind to work the way it should but you have to put forth the effort.

Taking action is only part of the equation. If you take the
wrong action on a consistent basis you'll fail on a consistent

Stop thinking about it, and just do it.

Don't learn something, and then learn something else.

Learn something, DO IT, then learn something else.

    Knowledge+Effort+implementation=SUCCESS

Success is achieved by the implementation of methods THAT WORK. If you're on the warrior forum, and can't find methods THAT WORK to implement, you won't make it.

I agree with Tina -- the ingredients that add up to success can be taught (motivation, taking action, focus, time management, etc).

Let's take the "gun to the head" example.

Start with a group of, say, 100 people who want to make money online. They study, they learn and some apply. Some apply what they learn correctly, some apply it incorrectly. Some sit on the couch eating rocky road ice cream and watching Law and Order reruns, so they don't apply anything at all.

Check back on their progress in a couple months. How many will have "succeeded?" That is, how many will have made at least a few bucks online?

    A small percentage. Very small.

Now take this same group, kidnap their loved ones, and say "make $xxxx online this month or you'll never see your family again."

How many will now get serious and take the necessary steps?

Quite a few more, I'd think.

Give people a good enough reason to get serious and REALLY take action, and they will. Most people who don't succeed online have "safety nets" -- so they dabble without getting really serious. And they don't succeed.

But teach them how to find and tap into their motivation, and you'll see more people having success.

    IMHO, of course.

    Cheers,
    Becky

Success is something that comes over time through deliberate work, learning from mistakes, and many other factors.

Daniel Coyle's book, The Talent Code, is a wonderful book that I think everyone that wants to understand the dynamics of what it takes to be successful, should read.

Here is his blog if you want to understand a little more about what it takes to become successful: The Talent Code

Yes... success or failure is a learned behavior.

Those who succeed are the ones willing to do the
time... put in the effort to learn the necessary skills.

They then have the determination and persistence to
apply those skills on a consistent daily basis.

Those are the mechanics of success.

But, there is the intangible factor... some call it
mindset... others call it attitude. Either way, those
who succeed in a large way have one thing in
common beyond the mechanics... a positive attitude
and an unshakable belief in themselves and their
    mission.

Those who fail repeatedly are just the opposite.
Their beliefs are easily shaken. They move from one
thing to the next on a regular basis, never taking time
to learn the skills required for success at anything.

They often display a negative attitude. They can recite
all the reasons why things won't work. They see the downside
    in everything.

The great thing is it's always a choice. The negative failures
can choose to become positive believers and embark on a path
that leads to success... it can be learned.

Seems like everyone agrees that success can be taught.

In my world success comes from a number of really good habits I have adopted over time. For example:

An old habit I used to have was "treating myself" every time I generated some nice revenue. That was not a success habit.

The new habit I have adopted is investing in assets every time I generate some nice revenue. This has made a huge difference.

In response to my many childhood cries of..."I can't do it," my mum always replied with a very curt..."Won't do it...There's no such word a can't".

The thing that always flashes to mind when I think of that feeling of "can't do" from childhood is...fear...2 of the 4 fears. Either.."not good enough" or "Rejection".

The other thing is, that Success leaves markers along the way.

Success is a series of strategies & techniques, that are performed in a sequence that creates success.
The same strategies & techniques performed another way, can bring disaster or ruin.

Success or as some call it, "Magic", has structure, staged repetition, action and constant movement towards the object of focus.

The thing is to find out what is required, nut it out, head for it, using the correct moves for each step.
The funny thing is that mostly it's the correct boring little things repeated over & over that create success.

Deliberate success is no accident & accidental success is no accident!

Success is crafted; it is a deliberate state of mind, that looks past the fears, failures of the past & focuses on the prize, then sets about in faith to claim it.

    That's my take on it!

Scott - good question. This is a lot more complex than it first seems IMO. It really does come down to the definintion of "success" in a given situation. The old "controllables" vs "uncontrollables" in sports psychology angle.

An example. In the music there are many instances of young musicians "succeeding" where many more skilled, experienced musicans may "fail" - often for what could be described as "genetic" reasons. Looks, voice timbre, general marketability etc etc

This might apply to success in Hollywood as well.

Even top songwriters will admit to not having control over a song once it is submitted to publishers etc. Their "success" in terms of chart placing is not able to be "taught". However their "success" in writing well crafted songs can be taught.

So I guess my answer would be "it depends"

    great post

It's why everybody need a Coach, a Mentor ( call that as you want but we all need someone...) - If you want to speak Spanish, you'll be really sucessful if you grow up with Spanish people where everybody speak spanish...or if you put yourself in a spanish environment...Well if you want to become rich, you need to be with rich people...to copy theirs mindset, their attitude, their beliefs - not all of them but the most powerful for you...

You can't learn and speak Spanish by staying with French People...do you?
then yes success can be taught....

In my opinion, you can learn to do anything as long as you commit enough to it.

Some may have natural advantages or disadvantages, but that's all.

The real problem is when people are eager to learn, but end up learning the wrong beliefs and attitudes. That sort of thing can hold you back your whole life if you're not careful.

That's why the most important thing to learn is who to take advice from

You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Someone can be supplied with all the best resources and knowledge in the world, but if they don't make use of them themselves, they won't get anywhere.

If someone keeps struggling with something, they have to look deep within to find out why. They can get someone else to help them with this (example: therapy), but the initial spark comes from the individual.

I think that it's genuinely a combination of the two...you're definitely on to something.

We're bound to things by nature but what I've noticed is success is the detachment of our nature to develop new skills...

But with that said even someone's continuous failures and discomforts are the only things that lead to success...so that's being born with success...it just looks really bad at the start.

I mean honestly...when we do something successful it's cuz we're like..I'm sick of this and I'm going to do whatever it takes to get out of it!! That in my opinion is the first step to success...everything from there is learned.

Anyways it's something to think about.

I'm not sure I'd say that success can be "taught" as much as it can be learned. I think experience, wisdom and motivation can do wonders for someone's future success.

    • I think what it takes to be successful can be taught. But it all depends on the person, what his goal is, and how bad he/she wants it.

I don't believe a person is naturally gifted. When a baby is born, they don't come out dancing or singing to the doctor. If they have talent - they developed it in their very, very young age with practice.

To become successful in our own eyes or in someone else's opinion is another layer of opinion too.

What I could regard as success in a venture could be seen as somewhat of a fizzer in someone else's eyes.

I think, for each of us, there comes a time when the thing we were born to do, rises up in our chest/bosom & it's from that platform we either aim for our star or go live on our scars in defeat, struggle & regrets.

Finding something to do, that's bigger than ourselves always helps achievement.

Each of us have many successes in life. We all have learned to walk, talk, write, go to the shops, clean our teeth etc & so on...all learned skills that a chook or cow can't do & in which we have been taught to succeed.

Therefore we do have the potential to aim for anything we chose in life & make calculated, decisive, focused steps towards it in belief we will achieve it..."it" being the successful gaining of our target.

Faith is the substance of things that are hoped for...
It is evidence of things from the unseen realm that produce the attraction of "stuff" into your life to action to bring about the thing desired.

If you have no hopes,, there can be no recognition of success in your own eyes.

So, it seems we are in continual challenge with ourselves to really reach upwards, onwards to something better...and that is overcoming, which could be measured as success.

Can this be taught...of course it can & is, daily, all over the world to those who will it so.
Will everyone WANT to try for it..No

That, sadly, is where it all comes unstuck!

Some people are born with greater talent than other, so at first it looks like "born with" is most important to success. To this I believe no one will disagree.

However I have seen more people with average talent succeed based on disciplining themselves that I have seen people who "had it all".

So to me "Success can be taught" by modeling and discipline.

I agree with beccalynn, success can definitely be learned by anyone, but I'm not sure it can be taught to anyone.

If you made "success 101" a required college course, no where near 100% of the students would learn to be successful.

You have to develop a burning desire to succeed - a "why," a reason - and then, no matter who you are or what your circumstances, you can learn success.

Success is entirely dependent on the person. One can learn a lot of skills to help one succeed but if the person is not into taking action or wanting to succeed, no course will help him/her to make it. I also don't believe it's something one is born with. One could inherit some bad habits that would contribute to lack of success as well as good habits that will help one succeed.

    Sorry, Mian,
I beg to differ with you!
Success is within the grasp of everyone in the world...not the ultimate possession...maybe the ultimate with in their grasp, but not the ultimate possession, according to how most people would define success in their opinion.

On the other side of inconvenience lays greatness...is that the success this thread intended?

Most people are either to fearful, too lazy, too pre-occupied or what ever to even HOPE for a modicum of what I think this thread is really meaning by success.

Of course, if they fail in their endeavors in these above mentioned terms, they are a success in technical reality...albeit, a success at failure!

I think the originator of this thread could have defined the boundaries of the discussion by defining the term "success", thereby giving everyone a clearer framework of understanding from which to debate the original question.

There'll be people that's been successful since birth but that doesn't mean only them could be successful because of their ancestors' deeds.

All people can be successful with the way they treat their lives, manage their finances and then not just pursuing into being a great employee for life. Being successful yourself takes time (it takes time for you to start a business for instance and earn from it). Lastly, remember that it's better to feel success when it's worked hard enough because after all those dreadful days, there's always pleasure.

      Absolutely!!! Success can be T-A-U-G-H-T.

But that does not mean the individual taught will be a success.

      Action and follow-through is necessary.

I've been trading futures markets for a living for more than 20 years. (Internet marketing helps me find fellow traders for ventures)

I could teach someone exactly how to take advantage of the opportunity that silver (now $18.45/oz.) is a buy right now with only a $2.00/oz possible downside risk with a $50.00/oz potential---- a 25:1 potential reward within a few years time --- but if they don't purchase any silver there is no way they can profit.

The strength of someone's beliefs and those special things, bravery and courage to take risks (whether they are risks to wasting your time or money) are the real motors to success.
