Do you sleep less than 6 hours or more than 9?

Was just going through Yahoo news and saw this link, not sure how credible this is but I do want to live long and healthy. With all this IM, I do sleep less.

Lack of sleep linked to early death - Yahoo! News UK

Hmm...I think it's pretty accurate. Being incredibly healthy and having high energy levels will more than likely cancel out the lack of sleep....maybe ; )

A full 8 hours is really healthy for you though...I kinda get into rough edges with my girl cuz of it(she's like a zombie...those vegetarians are gross!) but I try to get my 8 hours at least 5 days a week.

I feel a lot more productive when I get more sleep and my day just feels better...more alive and more...well loving and happy.

I don't think this did much for the research you found but it's more healthy AND more productive to get 8 hours.

Great question! I have always known that lack of sleep can cause a decrease in brain activity and metabolism for that particular day but I wasnt aware that it can lead to an early death!

Answer to question: 6-7 hours of sleep per day

I get about 6-8 as well. Funny thing about the article, I read an article about 3months ago that said you only need 5-7hrs to be productive and any longer than that can have a negative affect. Never know what to believe these days

My sleep patterns are terrible - if I am on a role I might work till 3am and then be so excited I am awake again at 7am ready to go. But that doesn't last long and before I know it im tired during the day and sleeping late in.

Getting a regular sleep pattern is important, but I just cant seem to do it!

Sadly I'm the same way. First of all, I've always had a problem with insomnia. Secondly like Careybaird, I'll start working on something and get so involved that I'll stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning.

So, on average I'm only getting about 4 hours a night lately. I really need to get a regular sleep pattern too!

I sleep anywhere between 4-6 hours. Sometimes 8. Sleeping for less than 4 hours is terrible for me as I would end up trying to 'catch up' with more sleep (which means more wasted hours/days).

If I slept more than 4 hours every night, perhaps I wouldn't have to read that sentence 5 times before getting the point... :p

I'm the same way. I need to be able to get into a pattern.

I work a night shift from 5pm-1am. By the time I get home I'm not tired I usually go to bed really late at around 4am-6am. Then will sleep until around Noon-2pm.

It's good to know lack of sleep might be linked to early death. It's more justification as to why I spend my "morning" sleeping

As long as over the course of your entire life you do not sleep for on average less than 6 hours a night then you will be fine.

If you think you do, then you need to go and see a doctor.

Everybody and every body is different and hence sleep requirements are different. Here's a funny true story. My spouse sleeps 3 to 4 hours less than I do. I decided there was something wrong with me so began sleeping 3 to 4 hours less. I got really pretty sluggish and felt sick all the time, so I went to few doctors about being tired. I finally had a sleep study done and found that I'm actually in the 99% when it comes to being a good sleeper. I just am what is referred to as a "long sleeper" meaning that I need 8+ hours a night to feel at my best. So, after this whole silly thing, it turns out that I just do need more sleep than my spouse and now I have doctors orders to get it. LOL. Hope this is helpful to someone.

No matter how late I stay up, I tend to wake up between 10-11 at any given time.

A similar thread was posted about this - as I said in that thread, lack of sleep correlating to early death really shouldn't surprise anyone. Your brain restores itself while you sleep - if your brain, your body's most superior organ, doesn't get that restoration, you'll likely die sooner than you should've.

I used to try and cram in as much as possible at the sacrifice of sleep. Great example is a website I designed awhile back - while I give myself an A for effort, the graphics left something to be desired. I stayed up all night working on it, running on coffee instead of sleep by the time the sun rose. But then, I just couldn't take it anymore, so I started going to bed earlier... then went back and attempted that site. The results were FAR superior.

Sleep contributes not only to your health, but your overall happiness and productivity. I still love my coffee - I pretty much drag ass all day if I don't get it, regardless of a full night's sleep - but it's no substitute for sleep.

It's not the Quantity its the Quality of Sleep.

I personally think 4-6-hours of sleep are fine. 4-hours of sleep, along with maybe 2-15min-45min (45 minutes is the maximum) power naps.

If you sleep less your body will start to adapt and generate more energy. You can be a lot more productive in the long run.

Especially coming from a business mindset, I'm able to work and study more, while my competitors are sleeping. Money is being made 24/7. Don't get me wrong sleep 4-hours only isn't easy in the beginning.

Nevertheless, learning to tie your shoe in the beginning isn't a cake walk either.

The average person lives until they are 80yrs old. Additionally, the average person sleeps 1/3 of their life away. So pretty much you can calculate how much time you have left to live. So personally, I choose to sleep less.

You can compare sleeping all day ie. (9-hours plus) to charging your cell phone. Charging your cell phone all day does not give your cell phone an infinite charge that is going to last a day longer. When your phone says it done or "Battery full" its done.

In fact I think there are studies where, leaving your cell phone on the charger weakens the battery.
However, the human body is the same way. When you sleep 9- plus hours a day, you in fact weaken your energy supply.

Its the same with the human body. Your body starts producing less energy. Therefore, leading to a "still feeling tired" state when you wake up... We've all been there before you sleep 8-hours plus and still feel tired.

So it's not the quantity of sleep it's the quality of sleep.
      REM sleep

      • I heard that coming out of childhood - to teen - and on to adulthood that you need less and less sleep. You ever noticed how much babies seem to sleep. But I think 6 - 8 is fine.

If you feel your body trying to catch up on rest - then stop and get back to getting enough rest. DON'T play with your body - it's only one of you! This could cause some health problems over time. Especially if you don't exercise either.

I agree that everyone needs to have enough sleep to function well. Everyone is different and needs different amounts of sleep.

I have also read that many people do not get enough sleep, and it affects their work and health. It would be better for everyone if the people around us always got enough sleep, but many people deprive themselves of sleep or have sleep problems.

I find Chamomile tea (available in most stores) can help me get to sleep if I need help doing that. It is a natural remedy that people have been using for generations.

I certainly agree that it differs from one person to another, some people might do just fine with 6 hours, while others need power naps in the afternoon after a 9-hour night sleep.

I used to sleep 6-7 hours a day back in college, but since college (enjoying the entrepreneur / marketer life) I sleep 8-9 hours a day.

What's weird is that I don't really notice any difference in productivity, concentration, etc. It's just easier to sleep a little longer in the morning than to get up, that's all.

I've read before we have four hour sleep cycle. So two of these cycles are supposed to be good for the night...

However, it seems like babies have a two hour sleep cycle. Especially new ones

I would love to get eight hour of sleep a night. But if my little guy goes four hours in a row without needing to eat, I'm pretty happy. Once he sleeps through the night, I think my productivity will go through the roof!

Do people actually get to sleep 9hrs? What kind of work do they do?

My personal experience is that when I'm on a regular workout schedule or just go swimming regularly, I tend to need less sleep after the first 2 weeks. When I'm not working out, I'm more draggy. Generally 5-6hrs max, and I wake up intermittently.

My life experiences tell me different people need different amounts of sleep. I know some people who can't function without at least 8 hours of sleep. My body just doesn't sleep for 8 hours.

I rarely sleep more than 4 hours at a time because I wake up after 4 hours. I try to get 5-6 hours total sleep a night because that's how i function best. I'm no good if I go for 3-4 days in a row with less than 4 hours sleep.

Good question, it's interesting to see the different responses.

The recommended amount of sleep is 8 hours but everyone is different. Some people can feel good on just 4-6 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep though can lead to tiredness throughout the day, lethargy, not being able to think properly or make the right decisions and just a general lack of energy and interest in things.

If you have things on your mind or are feeling stressed at bedtime that can also have your mind constantly thinking and worrying about things which in turn will keep you awake for hours on end.

The best solution for me is to go to bed and just switch off my brain. Not think about anything, just let my mind go blank. I find when i do this i sleep much better whereas if i go to bed thinking about a hundred different things i can stay awake all night and feel terrible the next day.

Have you ever tried to sleep with rocket attacks going off and other people in the room moving around banging the weapons on the floor? Try sleeping well with 6 other Army soldiers in the same room. This does not pane out to good. I work around 13 hr days then add the walk to the room time and the clean your butt time. Heck now we are at 15 hrs of the day already done. This does not include getting to eat. So there goes another hr. 16. By the time you lay your head down and start falling asleep someone comes in the room wakes you up and ugg ya feel like crap. Hi Guys.

All these posts on sleep are interesting but I reckon your body will tell you one way or another if you need more or less. I ebb and flow, sometimes 3 hrs, sometimes 7 hrs. I'm a boomer by the way and also a night person, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Someone said if you consider the biblical life span of three score years and ten - and if you work eight hrs, sleep eight hrs and play eight hours, by the time you pop-off you'll have slept for a third of your life!

Since I'm going towards the biblical number i've decided to rebel and, sleep or no sleep i'm seriously aiming for a Century. So i'm working on lots of birthdays because it's a proven fact - the more birthdays you have the longer you live

Anyway, smile awhile guys and download this free ebook.

    • my preference is to use intention to always sleep the length of time that optimally balances the satisfaction of my body-mind systems need for rest with the interest of not sleeping more than needed so I have plenty waken hours - I like using the 80-20 rule/ pareto principle as a guideline for that.

The second aspects is doing my best to reduce any unproductive wasting of energy, while living a healthy life and apply practices that can improve sleep quality or fulfill similar functions as sleep in a faster, or more holistically beneficial way (such as deep relaxation during the day and when going to bed to accelerate deep sleep states and get better rest, yoga, meditation, exercise, healthy diet, healthy relationships etc).

Sometimes I function best on 4 hours a night for weeks at a time, sometimes I need 10 hours a night for days at a time, i.e. when I went through much change and need to process and integrate...my primary choice is to let my inner wisdom decide how much sleep is optimal whenever I can...

6-8 hours of sleep is normal for adult age, more or less than the average hours can be a risk factor to illness such as hypertension and stress related health problems such as anemia etc.

My husband, on the other hand, probably gets less than 4 a night He has a terrible work schedule...

My normal used to be about 6-7 hours a night plus 1 or 2 in a nap during the day. However, since I now have a baby.... Let's just say 6 total hours on average for three days is a luxury.

The article is gone, but I have read that if you are trying to lose weight, you want to get 7-8 hours a night. More or less than that supposedly works against weight loss.

Try this: eat properly (nutritious foods in not large quantities) . and go to sleep at night as soon as you feel tired, and wake up without an alarm clock. Then do some reading at different times of the day. If you feel like you cant concentrate well, then take a nap. The night sleeptime hours + naptime hours = total amount of sleep you need. Do all this over a 30 day period and note the average times.

I forgot to mention I read a scientific study a long time ago and I have verified it with myself: Your last hour of sleep is the most important to mental energy. Many people try to cheat by skimming a half hour or so at the start and end of the night and then get fatigued during the day.

I sleep A LOT. And I mean A LOT. Don't get me wrong, I love to sleep - it's one of my biggest passions:p I sleep a full night and then I take at least a nap during the day.

My "passionate sleeping" habit came along with Internet money. I feel so free, careless and joyful when sleeping especially because I never managed to adapt to regular work (I mean slave labor) and now I can manage my own time.

I think people that are self employed should realize that they have something many others don't. The ability to live a healthier, longer life trough proper sleep. I mean let's face it. Money is no pleasure when you're sick. If you guys need motivation to get proper rest here are some facts about the benefits of sleeping:

    1. Sleep keeps your hearth healthy
    2. Sleep may prevent cancer
    3. Sleep reduces stress
    4. Sleep makes you more alert
    5. Sleep bolsters your memory
    6. Sleep can help you loose weight
    7. Naps make you smarter (I think I'll soon become a genius:p)
    8. Sleep may reduce the risk of depression
    9. Sleep helps the body make repairs

    Take care.

Sleeping is very important it makes you feel good when you have enough sleep, lack of sleep will lead you to early death. Ou body needs sleep to restore our good body condition. But these days I almost have 4 hours of sleep which is not healthy, it makes me feel drowsy and droopy most of the time. It is very important to have enough number of sleeping hours to replenish your energy and to completely regenerate your body cells. I'm so busy that I could hardly find time to sleep, but I realize that we really need to give our selves the right hours and sufficient time to sleep to live well.

Here is how you can get by on less sleep if need be..
I've been into meditation for years and have learned that if you relax your body and mind completely before you drift off, you can be more rested in fewer hours.
There are lots of mp3s and cds on relaxation. What I'm saying is dont go to sleep wound up and stressed out when you can deliberately go through each part of your body and mind and cause it to relax.
I think a lot of people don't know how tense they can be and still fall asleep. Some even grind their teeth during sleep.

When I learned this, I was studying some meditation-relaxation techniques, went to bed super relaxed and woke up in the early hours wide awake and ready to go.

I try to get 8 hours at least, but I wake up early most of the time hence going to bed early. Someone on the thread mentioned quality over quantity, and there is a school of thought in making your bed room stating as dark as possible, and even to the point where your blocking all light sources, i.e. alarm clock.

Funny how you stumble across topics that relate to where you're at in your own life. I am reading "The Ultra Mind Solution" by Mark Hymen M.D. and sleep is a huge part of a healthy life. The author cites sleep deprivation leads to depression, attention deficit disorder, problems with learning and memory, not to mention 100,000 car accidents a year. It's even been linked to Alzheimer's disease - which is why I'm reading the book in the first place. (my mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimers).
So if you own a coffee shop, you love our fast paced society. But for our long term health, maybe we should learn something from the book "The Four Hour Work Week".

I typically sleep 7-8 hours, but sometimes with IM my mind can work overtime especially when there are pressing issues at hand - this can cause me to wake up early and sleep-deprived (or not sleep very soundly at all) since my mind is so preoccupied it's almost impossible to really rest until the issues are resolved.

Meditation definitely helps though, especially right before bed time.

It's quite interesting question to answer! Sleep early, get up early is old saying by our grandparents. Yes, I agree with this. It's very important to kick off whole laziness and dullness at your work day activity. Usually to take sleep for 7 hours in a day. if you can't make the sleep early at regular time then have proper hours of sleep for your balance mind!

We listen to our bodies - 7-8 hours - if we need to push it - then we follow after Thomas Edison and his "Insomnia Squad" and work for 90, take a mental break of 30 on another non-related, maybe a 20 minute nap, and keep going. For example - John is working on his site Social Media Orgasm.com - and also studying "cramming" for his last 2 Amateur Radio (HAM) Licenses - Morse Code and Extra - for fellow HAMS - Elements 1 & 4...

ALSO - we have a SECRET SLEEP audio that we use - It puts the brain into Alpha state - a very restful, deep sleep. Put this on your POD, in a playlist, and repeat 4 times. Listen with speakers, or headphones. The audio is 30 minutes - We've never been able to keep our eyes open past the first play - It's really that GOOD. Here is the link to download -
    http://files.me.com/royos/tlqme0.wav
It's a 300+Mb File - This link will expire on 8/28 - afterward - please PM us if you'd like to have this for your use.

    I am an insomniac!

I read a book a while ago which contained some extremely good information about how to sleep less and have more energy.

Too much sleep can actually make you lethargic and fatigued.

The basic idea was to have a set sleeping pattern. Unfortunately, I have pretty inconsistant timing so I can't use the information all that much.

Give it a search because its definately worth reading.
