Are You In It Just For Yourself?

I wonder how many people will be able to answer this question honestly?

Are you into IM, running a home business, or whatever you want to call it,
just for yourself, just for the money?

More to the point, are you just for yourself?

A wise man said something today that hit home with me.

"If you're not for yourself, who else will be?"

"If you just for yourself, what good is that?"

What he meant, essentially is this.

If you're not looking out for yourself, regardless of what it is you do,
nobody else is going to look out for you.

In other words, if you want your home business to work YOU have to
make it work. You can't rely on others.

On the other side of the fence, if you're just in this for you, what good is
it?

In other words, if you're not making a difference in the lives of others
by providing them solutions to problems that they have, what are you
getting out of it other than just a paycheck?

How many of us are TRULY in it for others as well as ourselves?

How many of us can answer that question honestly?

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with doing something just
for the money as long as it's legal and ethical. Certainly when we had
our little paper route at the age of 10, we weren't doing it for anything
BUT the money. Did we really care that each and every person got their
morning paper? We delivered it because we had to.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

But if that's all there is, how full are our lives...really?

There are days, if I'm honest, when I wonder if I do any good at all. It's
not like I get my email box flooded with emails from people telling me how
I've changed their lives.

But then, on that rare occasion when somebody DOES send an email of
thanks, I think to myself, "maybe I am doing some good."

It's not easy when you essentially work by yourself. Sometimes there is
no feedback at all and there are very few people you can turn to.

So yes, there are some days I just say "Screw it! I'll do what I have to do
today so that I can pay this month's bills."

They are NOT my most enjoyable days.

The enjoyable days are the ones where somebody let me know that I
mattered.

Don't get me wrong. I know that it matters that I am able to pay my
daughter's college, our home and whatever else. But these days, with
so few bills left, I don't even have to work anyway.

And sometimes I wonder why I do.

And then I remember that I actually enjoy what I do...especially when I
feel like I matter.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones. Maybe I'm one of the rare ones. I
honestly have no idea. I certainly can't imagine those who promote
scammy CPA offers that they're in it for anything BUT the money.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they think these offers help people.

Anyway, where are YOU in all this?

Simply put...Why are YOU doing this?

Is it just for the money, or do you care?

More importantly, do you understand that, to a degree, you MUST be for
yourself because outside of those few people who REALLY do care, nobody
is going to personally take you by the hand and guide you through the
mine field.

I'll leave the importance of doing for others to you. That's between you
and your conscience.

Believe me...I have plenty of days where I wonder where my priorities
REALLY lie.

I can truly say that I am in Internet Marketing because I love the industry and the people in it. I also enjoy helping individuals and retail businesses earn money and get more clients with IM.
I know that the money will follow because givers gain. Great topic, thanks Steven.

    Hey Steven,

I do things now for me.

I've always liked helping people but over the years I've done things that I didn't enjoy to pay the bills.

Now I've created a situation focused on making the things I enjoy and that help others pay.

For example - I found over the years that my music was always on the back burner compared to my main work - so now I run a local fun drumming workshop that makes me money, gives me pleasure and helps others - I've built in a passion so that it pays to do it.

The same goes for everything else.

I generally only work in the afternoons as mornings are for the gym and doing things for myself (writing, reading, watching the world go by etc..)

I do tend to work harder when I'm doing something for someone else than I do when doing things for myself, so the only time I work hard is when it's because I want to wow someone I'm helping.

    This works for me.

I do charity work in my 'me' time so I take on enough work for other people to pay the bills and keep me out meeting people, but I don't do anything just for the money.

    Hey Steven?

You matter. Whether you do a lick of Internet Marketing or not. I know how "going it alone" feels because I do it too. Understand what it feels like.

You work, you hope the work you're doing helps *someone* out there, and there are times when you just *help* someone the best you can.

At the end of the day, I wonder too. Did it do any good? Does anyone even care?

To answer the question, I do "this" for both. For myself (for money) and I try to help people when I feel I can.

But I was posting this to say: YOU matter. :-) You help more people day to day than I can count. lol

Good post. I'm in IM because I find it enjoyable and there's nothing quite like having people tell you that you are a great help to them. It's a great feeling when people say to you "Thank you, this guide you've created helped me so much!"
But of course, just like a real job, the main point is to be able to pay your bills first and foremost. But I find it enjoyable that I can make a living by helping people.

My first info product - I would get hate mail from people one day and letters of praise from people the next day

I took time to to respond back to each and everyone one of the haters politely and they would then write back very meekish. I guess the niche was a sensitive one for some (It was a music business related product)

The people who I helped really did make my day

I think you hit a good topic - everything I do is in my best self interest, and I'm the first one to call anyone who claims otherwise a liar. You can call me cold, heartless, and whatever else - but at the end of the day, I am alone - sure I have people I care about immensely, and I get tremendous satisfaction out of helping people... but I am in it for myself. I'm into the feelings those outcomes give me - and if I didn't do what I wanted and enjoyed, there would be no point in living. It's a double edged sword, but what isn't...
