I thought I was just lazy....

But now I hear it's because of IM product bombardment, the next new shiny thing; my lack of progress that is. I can't focus on anything.

Actually things are progressing well for me, but I wanted to get a little closer to the core of non-progress for IM'ers as I see it and as I have struggled with it in the past.

Could it be merely because we're just lazy? We try something for a couple days, no result show, then we freak out, have a meltdown and quit in total despair?

Has that happened once or twice to you?

The meltdown is the place where the losers separate out from the winners. Sure it isn't easy to get going, but the only thing holding you back is you.

That struggle with despair is really the lower part of you that identifies with failure and very much prefers to remain in a state of pity because it can get so much mileage from it.

Truth is, so many times we cut ourselves off when we are just at the brink of success. I think this is because our subconscious realizes that something is about to change (for the better) and it unleashes all hell in a desperate attempt to keep us down and in that perpetual state semi-misery.

My point? If things seem to be going nowhere, do not quit, keep trying to make things happen. You need to capture some sort measure of success, hold onto it and start to build from it.

Does this sound like desperation? Maybe you like everything to go "perfectly", maybe if you don't feel like you're in total control you're not doing it right. After all, isn't this how your mother/father/pastor/schoolteacher/IMguru told you how to do it. I mean, you don't want to be thought of as silly, stupid, or naïve; do you?

Don't do it for them or their approval, do it for yourself; that way if you look like a fool on the way up, it won't matter to you that much. Ignore the "voices", just keep on keeping on.

Sounds like you need some psychosis drugs. I don't think that it is normal to have that internal battle going on. Do you actually hear the voices arguing with each other? If so, at least you will never feel alone.

      Who's "normal" here?

I'm only speaking metaphorically about voices.

If you're "normal" you just want a good job where the MAN handles all the hard decisions and you don't like to rock the boat so much. If you're normal you're content with your little box you live in; hive slot, cubicle, whatever.

Excellent Post. One other thing that you can do to focus is set a goal to work on a project for 21-45 days regardless if you get immediate positive results from your Internet marketing campaigns.

I respectfully have to disagree. For the most part, internet marketing relies upon exactly the same methods used for centuries in the "offline" world. Granted, the tools are somewhat different but the core methods and strategies are identical.

If I believe your statement, this would mean that the offline world is abnormal as well. Slightly different worlds, yes. Normal vs. Abnormal... I don't think so.

There are also a few million people out there who would desperately love to working for "the man" but cannot find an opportunity in this economy. To cast real world job seekers in the light of caving in to authority or somehow being of lesser character is a statement you might want to reconsider.

          True, paradigms are changing.

Internet marketing requires self-motivation and drive, not to mention an extraordinary amount of perseverance. This was more "normal" maybe 100 years ago, when 90% of the population was self-employed.

But do you deny that a person can "get by" by just showing up at a job and doing the minimum requirement to keep his or her job? They won't go far but they can certainly "coast" with relative ease. The employer takes the hits, while the employee is just basically a cog in the machine.

Of course in the third world you have to break your back just to squeak by, an we buy a lot of their products at Walmart or Target.

Making it IM requires a completely different mindset and determination, just like any business as opposed to a "job". The majority of people have regular jobs and that's just the way things are.

To me IM is just like ANY business that a person starts, a proposition which is definitely going against the trend in this day and age and demands something extraordinary to make it work.

I used to be very lazy; I still am, but IM liit a fire under me.

I guess it's just unclear to me what the distinction is that you are trying to draw between those involved in IM versus those involved in real world business or those who have real world jobs. It's hard to image you believing that those involved in IM are extraordinary individuals and those who are employed with "jobs" are somehow not? What a sad indictment and mischaracterization of the world that would be, if it were true.

Starting any business, whether online or in the brick and mortar world, requires self-motivation, drive and perseverance (and a few other things to boot). These qualities and traits are not unique to those participating in internet marketing.

Absolutely it is true, "...that a person can "get by" by just showing up at a job and doing the minimum requirement to keep his or her job...", however, people such as this are few and far between. Especially in this economy. And I can confirm that from first-hand experience with my own employees that the vast majority are highly motivated, driven, talented, committed and possess an exceedingly strong desire to succeed. To say anything less is a highly inaccurate portrayal of employees... anywhere.

The same characteristics that will make you great at IM also make great real world business owners and absolutely fantastic employees. I want to be clear that I'm certainly wishing you all the best, but if by some misfortune of fate you are forced to return to a regular job, your perspective on what it takes to become a great employee will be greatly changed.

With some points I agree but some are rather disputable. The greatest role in everything plays our inner strength no matter how badly you want something.

    i agree with the OP.

working by yourself is very different in terms of the discipline required to keep going everyday.

obviously the fundamentals behind running a business are essentially the same, but the lack of such levels of accountability affect our ability to maintain the course.

Maybe you are holding back from doing something and procrastinating because of some FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) factor. It could fear to succeed and not knowing how to deal with it or the old faithful fear of failure.

Most of us stall from taking certain actions for fear of failing and sometimes portrayed as lazy.
