Are You Prepared To Dance Until It Rains?

Hi guys,

I was recently re-reading Vic Johnson's "Day By Day With James Allen", which is a collection of e-meditations on some of James Allen's quotes and teachings from As A Man Thinketh.

A part that really blew my hair back(the third time I read it) was about persistence. Johnson mentions a story he heard about a tribe in Africa "that confounded all of the anthropologists. It seems that this tribe has for centuries enjoyed a 100% success rate with its rain dance. In comparing this tribe to other tribes who did rain dances but who didn't always experience success, the experts couldn't find anything that differentiated the one tribe. They performed the same rituals, praying the same incantations to the same gods, in the same costumes. Like all the tribes, they sometimes danced for days, even weeks on end. Finally an astute observer noticed something very telling. The successful tribe did one thing - and only one thing -different than the other tribes. It ALWAYS danced UNTIL it rained!"

So, the real question becomes, can you really fail if you never quit?

The answer for my life would be that persistence, accompanied by a belief in what I'm doing, inevitably leads to success.

I see a lot of people quit as soon as they hit the first bump on the road, which is really no way to go about building a business or income.

Your thoughts on this?

Cheers,

Josip

I was often puzzled when Jesus said " If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

However, I have come to understand that if you have eternity then nothing is impossible.
The same idea can be found in the Chinese proverb which says "The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying a way small stones".

How long would it take you to literally remove a mountain by carrying away small stones? Time seems to be our main limitation. At least in this lifetime it is.

The other quote I like is that of Benjamin D'Israeli who when asked how he succeded when others could not do what he had done said; " Nothing can resist a will which will stake even it's existence upon its fulfillment." In other words; " I will do this if it kills me".

You read of examples of people quitting on the verge of success while others persist and, despite all the odds, break through to their success.

In contrast to all this persistence and achievement I have to say; "what is the purpose of it all"?
Like the writer of Ecclestiastes; "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit".

I am not drawing any conclusions from this, just adding what I think to the mix in this thread.

    Hi Josip,

I failed once. Stood up. And made it on the second try.
Yes, in the end whoever sticks will make it. Two thumbs up.

I think there would be a lot less sadness in the world if people believed this much in themselves and in what they do. And ultimately, they would get things done!

I was like this for a very long time. It was when I saw my life for what it really was that I decided: NO MORE!

May the joy be with you,

I love this quote. I find myself dancing and quiting, dancing and quiting every single day.

The key for me is getting up and doing it again the next day.

    Thanks for sharing this post.

    Very Powerful. Love this!

It makes me think. If we do everything we could possibly do to achieve a particular goal, could we every really be stopped? Wow. This makes me think...

My pleasure. Yes, it's all about getting up again. I love this quote from Batman Begins, where Bruce Wayne has fallen into a hole and hurt himself:

Alfred Pennyworth: Took quite a fall, didn't we, Master Bruce?
Thomas Wayne: And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.

It sometimes hits me that we humans really don't know anything about how much personal power we possess! But, there are plenty of examples out there of people who have risen above all expectations and shattered beliefs of what can be done.

    Hi Josip,

    I like this analogy!

Keep going until you get to your goal. You choose whether to stop going or continue until you've reached it.

The funny thing about obstacles is that they were designed to propel you forward, not stop you. Those who learn to take the seed or growth from any obstacle moves forward quickly. They keep dancing no matter how much they hurt because they know that pain is a driver like no other.

    Thanks for sharing

Exactly! This is what most people, to their own misfortune, just don't understand.

I think persistence is the key to success. I also think you need a vision where you actually see yourself succeeding. You need inner confidence and strength to take failures and turn them into a learning experience.

I'm 21, and every month I have my mom complaining to me how she thinks I'm never going to make a lot of money online. I've been doing internet marketing for 2 years now, and I have a couple businesses that I'm sure will eventually make me a lot of money online. I'm never giving up. Unfortunately, I'm going to be getting away from my family when I do start making a lot of money.

Nothing is worse than not supporting your own kids. I have to deal with this all the time. It's very sad.

The average person does not understand how to make money. They go to work at a local job, and they make average pay. They complain about how they hate their jobs, yet they never do anything about it. This is something that I've never wanted to do.

Strong people can outlast the criticism from average people and use it to make themselves stronger. My task will eventually be accomplished, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

    great post josip.

i find it mildly amusing sometimes that people that have not yet experienced the success in life they are looking for, have this illusion that successful people don't get knocked down.

and so the first time they get knocked down they quit.

a wise man once said 'True success comes from getting up one more time than you get knocked down'.

so, if you are down GET UP.

What a very inspiring post! This is just what I need to have some hope back. It truly is hard to get back up once you failed. It's nice to know that there are still a lot of people who have made it despite the setbacks that they've encountered.

ALWAYS dance until it rains - what a great analogy.....and i ABSOLUTELY agree. You hear this consistently but very rarely do people follow through on it on a daily basis. But you can see why - no results after a period of time and people get frsutrated and move on, it is human nature. Life gets in the way and things that are creating pain versus pleasure get shelved. As they should.

Personally, I struggle with this regularly and have ups and downs. Aside from my online life, I run an software company (my fourth) and every day at some point I feel like cancelling the RAIN DANCE and taking a break. Staff issues, customer issues, operational issues - there is always something going on...... BUT....... to pay the price makes the reward more worth it in the end. The results will come if you stay the course and stay in the dance. Don't become a bad statistic about one that failed. Your results for your life rest on your shoulders. What is the story of your life going to look like?

"In all your getting, get understanding" - Prov.4-7

...maybe people quit because they don't really have a belief or true understanding of purpose in what they are doing(attempting). If your motivation isn't rooted in your belief, regardless of what that belief is, you will not find the strength to dig in and actually "Dance til' it rains!"

Good quote and I could add a little more "Happy is the man that finds wisdom and gets understanding"

Could say more but unfortunately, the chosen quote is taken out of context and would be off topic anyway.

What is failure? Is there such a thing? And why not reframe it altogether?

Simple put powerful frames of mind:
    1. Success is measured by the number of times you have failed.
    2. There is no failure, there are only setbacks.
    3. Failure is the way in which people test and find out what doesn't work so they can get to the things that do work faster.

    Dear Josip,

I sincerely thank you for this metaphor. I was pretty demoralized with my lack of success before read your article but now I ask myself:

Am I willing to dance until it rains?

And the only answer on my mind is, Yes, I am willing.

I would say that failure is a matter of perspective. If you quit after a setback or when things don't go as you expected them to, you have created failure for yourself. But, if you learn from the experience and persist in your efforts, then failure becomes a learning experience and actually advances you and aids in your success.

When I think of things that I am most grateful for in my life, I can't help but to think of some personal disasters or "failures", because they helped shape me into the person I am today.

well the core point is that the successful man, has already achieved his goal before he has even started.

, this is something that cannot be taught nor learned, bought nor sold. it just has to manifest into knowledge though personal experience.

Here is James Allen's original quote from The Mastery Of Destiny that inspired Vic Johnson to write about persistence:
