You'll never change unless...

Real change in our lives is emotionally driven not logically driven. Have you ever noticed how people usually hit complete rock bottom before they make a lifestyle change? And usually that change is extreme.

In other words we must become completely feed up, angry, and exasperated with our current situation in order to make a lasting change. Losing weight because it is good for you is not motivating. Losing weight because you’re tired/angry/feed up/exasperated with the way you look and feel causes change. This is why when someone tells you that you can't do something like lose weight, stop smoking,or reach a goal you become ultra motivated to prove them wrong. Proving someone else wrong is so motivating, because your anger/frustration with the other party drives you to do what you normally wouldn’t do for yourself.

Lack of emotional friction is also why comfortable people don’t change. If there is no emotional friction/irritation then there is no motivation. If you are interested in changing but there are no consequences or friction for not changing you must place friction on yourself for motivation. What would this friction look like? Well for a smoker wanting to quit it may be promising their children or loved ones every morning that they will not take a smoke that day. The emotional friction of lying to our children or loved ones is motivating.

There are lots of ways to create emotional friction but the thing to remember is that it is absolutely necessary.
