Think of the mighty elephant that can lift in excess of a ton of weight with just its trunk. The question is: How do they condition the elephant to stay in one place with a weak rope? Answer - It's through conditioning. The elephant when it is a baby, is tied to a strong chain and a strong tree. The baby is weak but the chain and tree are strong. Baby elephant keeps pulling the chain, but fails repeatedly. A day comes when it realizes that all the pulling will not help. It stops and stands still. And, when the baby elephant becomes the mighty elephant, he is tied with a weak rope to a pole. The elephant could, with one tug or pull, walk away free, but it goes nowhere, because it has been conditioned to stay and conditioned to not explore his true power.

    This is an apt analogy.

It's like a mental prison. Your thoughts enclose or empower you. It depends how you've been trained or more importantly how you decide to train yourself.

I thank for your response, yeah, I agree with you -- we often talk how we're training ourselves but we neglect how we're getting or got trained so far by others -- people, books, internet, tv, etc.

If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you can't. You are what you think. Start with little success and let the early success bring confidence so that your belief will be stronger and your goals will be bigger.

For a new project, I aim for the first sale. And then I try to repeat the same formula to get the second sale. Then I increase the volume and frequency of work to get more sales.

Thanks, You've built a formula for your success and I wish you all best of orders for your work. It's very simple that we're what we think and as you know thinking is the tough job and very few get engage into it. But, to be positive and successful -- thinking right and acting right is very important

Wow! Powerful! Thank You for sharing.

Brings to mind a recording by Abraham-Hicks I was listening to this morning that shared that the best way to deal with resistance that comes up to keep us from moving forward towards our good/goal, is to simply acknowledge it.

One of the most intriguing things about transformation is that each person gets to transform what they consciously choose to but acknowledgment and acceptance that there is something to transform is the important first step.

With this elephant and with all of us, there are limits that we so deeply accept as 'reality'. Every day I try to find at least one within that I can acknowledge, accept, release and transform.

btw, would also love to know the source so that I can share.

Right without any ounce of doubt...revising mental attitude everyday should be a must duty.

Thank you...I remember, Tony Robbins lecture, in which he said, acknowledge your beliefs but lie with your beliefs. he said, simply, your beliefs you hold as true may not necessarily be.

Thanks, it's not my creation and who first observed this fact is quite difficult. There are many authors who used this conditioning example along with Pavlo's dog 'operant conditioning'.

In India, is some timber depot's elephants are trained in this way, to carry huge logs.

Probaby in Psycho-Cybernetics 2000, the one NOT written by Maltz.

Another good example of conditioning comes from Ellen Langer.

An above middle class family always cuts both ends of the ham each Christmas. Its a family tradition that has lasted 50 years. They didn't quite know why they did it. They just did it.

One day, Great Grandma walks in and 6 year old Jenny asks her why they did it. Great Grandma's answer: Back during the Great Depression they were so poor they couldn't afford bigger plates to put the ham in. That's why they cut the ends off the ham to fit the size of their small plate.

  • I heard that story the first time in Tony Robbins material. Very true and a fascinating (if not horrible) story!

I tell it to my students all the time at Shinka Martial Arts

Yeah, it's true and it describes how we get stuck in the rut.

Thanks Michael, you've contributed a good point, we're constantly being getting conditioned or say trained by various external influences 'good or bad' but ultimately it's we to choose to accept/reject that influence.
