Shoot for the Moon....Dont Get Caught Gazing At Stars

I just heard this from...wait for it....the rapper, Eminem

I couldnt help but think how much this really applies to internet marketing.

Have you even been caught not taking action, despite setting high goals?
(shooting for the stars but caught gazing at the stars)

What did you do to overcome it...if anything?

That quote made me think of all the IMers with very high aspirations and goals, but try every new method and product that the "gurus" launch and eventually get nowhere.

To answer your question...the thing that finally helped me overcome my gazing was to pick on one method and work on it until I started making decent money with it and became proficient before even thinking about any other methods.

This reminds me of a quote an old boss told me about failure. "Shoot for the moon, and if you miss at least your still up with the stars..."

I always thought to myself. "Well I didn't shoot for the stars, I shot for the moon." I guess what it meant to me was that if I'm going to shoot for the moon then there is no kickin' it with the stars. I want to hit the damn moon.

Seems like the saying, "at least being with the stars" is a poor excuse for plan b, which I don't believe in. I would say gazing at the stars would even be classified as a distraction in my mind.

I've always heard, "If you shoot for the star's, at least you'll end up on the moon".

I think the don't get caught gazing at stars is along a slightly different tangent, but no less true.

And I don't see that quote as a "plan b" mainstreet, I see it as more of a worst case scenario...We can't be 100% successful all the time, but if you don't put forth the effort you will be 0% successful.

  • Sure it's good. It's true though and it's simply based on taking actions on goals.

The trick of the game here is to find out what your goals and dreams are, and then act on that. Is it simple in theory? Sure. How does it play in the real world? Wildly different from person to person.

My blog yesterday actually addressed a very important part of this challenge -- finding out where exactly to shoot for. If you have no "moon" so to say, then you are just stagnating. As Zig Ziglar says you are no closer to the goal that you do not have.

If finding your own dreams and goals is important to you (and I suggest it be important to you) then my blog post is right here for you to read... What is Your Goal in Life?

    Good points.

I think the important thing is part of this quote relates to taking action, which is a huge problem for newer marketers in this industry.

Shoot for the moon. Yes the moon is far away, but its within reach...humans have proved that. So, set your goals very high, but make sure they are reachable.

Dont get caught gazing at the stars. To me, this means dont get caught not taking action, dont stand idle, dont be stagnant, always be moving forward. Dont be gazing.

I just found this quote extremely relevant to us IMers

have you guys and girls ever been caught gazing?

I like the quote Kenster, thanks for sharing.

I did plenty of star gazing early on in my IM career for fear of taking action. I lacked confidence and because of this had anxiety about acting on my dreams. As my vision has become more clear taking massive action has not been a problem.

When you can keep your eyes on the moon despite everything going on around you then you won't have the time to gaze, you'll be planning a lunar landing on a 24-7 basis. Such is the power of a clear and definite vision.

I always aim for the moon, aim as big as possible, set big expectations and targets, really aim (for what I perceive to be) the upper limit.

I am constantly in a state of mild dissapointment, never quite reaching my target, sometimes I am miles off However, the aiming for the moon and reachin the stars still really applies - the result is still very positive and still a big success...

I don't think anyone ever landed on the moon by aiming for the roof... so you won't make a million $s by aiming to make $1000..., and if you miss the $1m you might still reach $500k... I'd be ok with that

Setting goals is great, but setting goals too high can be detrimental if that is your one and only goal. Its fine to have an extremely high goal, but I would then suggest to have milestones or smaller goals in the middle, as this seems to help a lot of people stay motivated and ont track to achieve the larger goal.

But I think the powerful part of this quote is the part about gazing at stars. Most people set goals and set high goals. Thats the easy part. Not letting yourself gaze at stars is the hard part. Always be doing something, moving closer to your goal even if its a baby step. Always be active and momentum will take you far. Dont gaze, do do.

After reading this my immediate thought associated stars with 'all the distracting information' which stops you from firing at your aim.

I have very high goals and it took me 3 weeks to really start - from my last exam 3 weeks ago until today. What changed? I just realized that I don't want to end up with an useless degree and no opportunities whatsoever...
