Procrastination - An Evil That Can Be Overcome!!

Just a Thought to Share - -

If you want to give up a bad habit - like Procrastination - chances are you are deceiving yourself. If you really wanted to overcome it, it would fade away on its own.

What we should address is the benefit of giving it up: Once you decide that the benefit you want - overcomes the habit in strength and desire - ergo - the bad habit is gone!

You know, the simplest truisms - such as the above - are, have been, and always will be, the BEST WAY by far!

See ya!

Good advice. Seeing the good in the situation, because seeing the negative would bring more of the negative.

Whatever we focus our attention and energy on expands. See the benefits, feel yourself to be in possession of the benefits of not procrastinating and see how quickly you move into constructive action.

Yep its all about visualising your goals and just working towards them. It also helps to be in the situation where you cannot afford to procrastinate. A buddy of mine had been trying to start his own internet busineess for years and was 'too comfortable' to start it. He's took the somewhat radical step of quitting his dayjob and forcing himself to grind hard on his own stuff.
      Works for some!

(not a good plan if you have kids to feed like me though)

People procrastinate because they start doing their motivation for taking action is a runaway type of motivation instead of being a going to type of motivation.

The biggest way to overcome procrastination is to make sure something that you are really passionate about, have a dream, a goal and just get going. When you do something everyday for a least 30 days it becomes a habit and with habit comes addiction and then well you have nothing to procrastinate about any more!

If you are excited about what you have to do, you are not going to procrastinate about them. Setting realistic goals that are tied to your values helps overcome not wanting to take the actions necessary to achieve them.

Just finished reading 59 Seconds by Richard Wiseman. He gives some good practical pointers on how to overcome the demon of procrastination, which has beset the best of us from time to time. Its worth a read imo

Procrastination is the ultimate bane in my business.

Just today.. I wanted to start another keyword research for my BaBS system (need to try them fast or else I won't be able to refund if the results weren't satisfactory.

    Guess what??

I ended up switching on my Xbox instead.
Ended up wasting a good 45 minutes this morning.

    This is bad.. really bad.

    Very good points, Concours.

And very interesting subject. More than half the billion dollar self-help industry thrives because of this human behavior. From my own experience more than half the people I helped thought procrastination is what is holding them back from their success.

But unfortunately, like in all the other human behaviors, one answer does not fit all. What works for one may or may not work for others simply because people are different and unique. Cold turkey approach and confrontation works for some not for others.

Strangely, finding out what was the befits of procrastinating that instilled the belief system and the resulting behavior and dealing with it may be the answer for some.

Normally, in the long run, disciplining tactics won't work here - that is the last thing a procrastinator wants to do.

But fortunately, there are techniques that can bring about transformation in a person
so he can overcome anything in life including procrastination.

I'll post a real reply to this thread later...

I kid, I kid... I used to let procrastination rule my life. When it came to chores around the house, paying bills, projects at work, you name it... Almost cost me my marriage... on more than one occasion. I'm past it now, thanks to the great inspiration and advice from my fellow Warriors.

Everyone give yourselves a pat on the back, because I'm not there to do it!

    THANK YOU, WARRIORS!!!

Overwhelm is a big cause of procrastination for some. People just don't know where to start and so they don't. The key is to break tasks into smaller chunks and start early to allow time for breaks as you go along. I can't tell you how helpful it is when you get an assignment or have an idea to immediately do something even it is to make a list of the steps to complete the project.

Why most people procrastinate is because of these:

    - You CANNOT see/ feel the positive impact (benefits) directly or fast enough by doing what you "suppose" to do
    - But, on the other hand, you know you are getting pleasure if you procrastinate or doing something else (most of the time the activities that bring negative results).

This is what I mean, for example, you want to lose weight. You know you have to exercise everyday, control your diet all that stuff.

But why are you not doing it? Or why are you procrastinating?

It is because, even though you know the positive outcome or impact of exercising consistently, you failed to see that result immediately.

I mean, you can't see yourself lossing 10 kg tomorrow morning after you go for a long run today. Don't you? The impact follow by that outcome is not that strong.

On the other hand, the negative activity (such as eating ice cream or anything that can put more weight) brings much clearer and direct impact to you. As you know if you do it now, you get pleasure. And it's so much easier to eat an ice cream as compared to a long tiring run.

I hope I am not confusing you guys by giving such a metaphor. This is what I just read from a book today, thought that it's worth to share it here.

Yes, I truly believe that we already have what we want to have and we already are what we want to be. Always. If you want something that you do not have, you need to change your beliefs about it.

Also, regarding procrastination, the best way to overcome this is to give it 15 minutes. Look at the item you are procrastinating about, and say I'm just going to give this 15 minutes RIGHT NOW, once you start it will be hard to stop. That technique works like magic!

This was the beginning of the end for my procrastination. I was recently in a situation where it was "do or die" and lo and behold, my procrastination started to vanish when I realized that the results of me not doing whatever task it was, was far worse than me procrastinating.

After the "do or die" situation was over, I remembered how good it felt to actually get things done and how proud I felt to actually accomplish tasks.

And then I started taking it one day and one task at a time.

Thanks for the tip Andrew. I'm going to give that a try the next time I feel the need to procrastinate.

The best way to get over procrastination is to ask you self one thing.

What is the most valuable use of my time right now?

If you answer this question throughly, you will never procrastinated again. As long as you follow those ideas you receive with action.

Don't forget to get your Stuff DONE!

Proscrastination is something I get caught up with a lot. But one way I get around it is to identify my excuses and then, knowing what they are, FORCE myself to work despite them.
