I discovered the secret to success when I was in 2nd grade.

This is a true story, and it is why I know I will be a successful IMer.

I grew up in a basketball family, my brothers, and extended family played basketball ALL of the time, and they were VERY good. So when I was in 1st grade I obviously wanted to be good at basketball too. Problem was... I was in 1st grade and my family were into their teens or early twenties. In fact I was bad even for a 1st grader. I was always picked last on basketball teams on the playground at school. Then summer before 2nd grade rolled around and want to know what I did?

I STARTING WORKING EVERYDAY TO MAKE A CHANGE IN MY LIFE!!!

I honestly spent at least 2-3 hours every single day playing playing basketball that summer. It took a while to develop any skill at all, but after a month there was some noticeable improvement. After two months I wasn't terrible anymore, and after three months I was good enough to actually learn from my older brothers. I remember on the first day of school in 2nd grade I challenged the best kid in school to basketball and everybody laughed at me. They remembered the 1st grader Andy who couldn't even come close to getting the ball in the hoop. Granted I beat him and remained a good basketball player for as long as my interest held.

The lesson here is that SMALL THINGS APPLIED OVER TIME WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO RESULTS! Time after time I see people wanting to know how to make X amount of money in Y amount of days. Without really learning the ropes or putting in any effort. Or I see people work very hard at a workout regiment only to putter out after a week and a half. Whatever it is that you want to do, if you want to improve you need to take the time and put in the effort to learn whatever it is you need to learn. No it won't be easy but it will be worth it. If most people spent the amount of effort they spent looking for shortcuts on simply doing some consistent and productive action they would be much better off.

So for all of you who are looking for short cuts... Stop it.

For all of you who are still grinding it out, getting up after every fall. Keep your head up and keep going.

-Andy

Very good point. Dan Kennedy says do one thing a day for your business no matter what, and you'll succeed.

    Great advice Andy.

I am a hoops nut too, and had a similar experience. Wasn't too good in the beginning but spent many days shooting thousands of jump shots and working on my game.

Eventually I got a scholarship to a junior college for my basketball skills.

It all happened because I took shots and worked on my dribbling almost every single day for a long time. If I threw in the towel after taking 50 shots I never would have improved to the point of being a success on the court.

    Very true...

Sometime ago the first week of april this year, i made a commitment to write 15 articles a day. Before that, I wasn't that good at writing up articles and having them perform that well(it used to be above average but yet not so good). So I began and followed the plan for 30 days.

30 days of article writing - 15 articles a day. At the end, I had become a maestro in article marketing. I no longer care about another WSO on writing articles.

I can call myself the best in writing powerful articles that get people to click through on the planet. The same goes for any skill...

Want to improve copywriting? write one sales letter a day

Another story of mine. In soccer, there's a cool trick called around the world. I couldn't even juggle the ball and around the world was impossible. But I made a commitment last year to do it.

I started juggling the ball and practicing for one hour every day. Things were extremely hard the first two weeks. And as the end approached, I got it.

Skill improves when you do something persistently and consistently. Otherwise, nothing happens.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN YOUR LIFE, DO SOMETHING SMALL EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT WILL WORK YOU OUT IN THAT PARTICULAR AREA.

    EVENTUALLY, YOU"LL BECOME A MASTER.

    Great words of wisdom, Andy!

Jeff Olson's book The Slight Edge: Secret to a Successful Life expands on the lesson you learned. He explains how you do a little bit each day toward your goal. At first you do not see the results, then one day "BOOM!" the results are dramatic.

Thanks for sharing your example, and I'm so glad that you learned it at such a young age.

Great story Andy. I agree with you. I didn't play basketball but I did apply the same idea to learning to play the piano and the trombone. I about drove my parents crazy with the trombone. A lot of sour notes but eventually I became the best trombone player in our high school.

I'm going to take your words of wisdom to heart and apply it to article marketing. I'll let everyone know after 30 days the results.

Agree that small things applied over time can make the difference. Provided these small things will have small improvements in them when applied over and over again. Otherwise it will be no different from a guy doing 20 years of work of exactly the same thing. He will grow old in the budging not from where he was 20 years ago.
