Do you not think that Personal development books are a threat to a safe life?

If someone already learned to live a life with in means and is going good and then suddenly he/she reading about going further, dreaming big, taking risks and then out of that derived motivation he/she starts taking risks or may run a change program, only to face losses and disappointments.

In my opinion personal development books may have did wonders to only few and may have caused losses, tensions and disappointments to many.

Remember Acres of Diamonds by Russell H. Conwell -- the guy is motivated to find diamonds and he ends up being broke and dies.

    A very, very good point.
If you do something only because tells you to do so, or recommends it to you, instead of realizing it yourself, then yes. - It can be "dangerous".

But keep in mind, it better to regret something you have done, than something you didn't do.

Also, common sense still plays a great role when digesting those kind of books.

Are the authors points valid? Are the facts right, and do you actually believe him/her? If not, it would just be silly to try to copy them. Especially to do what they're telling you to do.

Only problem here, is that "Common sense is not as common as it used to be".( Quote from Daniel Bacerra or something)

So "idiots" might fall for it, fail, and get their lives ruined.

Whenever I do something I'm afraid of, I think to myself "What's the worst that could possibly happen? Can I die by doing it? No? Then I'll do it if the potential reward for doing it is big enough. I have very good confidence, and I know that every problem can be solved.

I hope that answers your question

Ah yes, but if only he had looked in his own back-yard first - that is the point of the story!

You want to approach Personal Development Books with an open mind. You want to set goals that are important to you. You don't want to set goals that somebody else thinks you should be pursuing.

One must attempt trying new things with a bit of wisdom.

As every individual is unique with different talents, goals, personality traits, experiences and gifts to name a few, they shouldn't just "copy" someone else blindly. However, if they adjust the goals to fit their own uniqueness, pace, lifestyle and means, they could be quite successful.

You can't just throw out all self help and inspirational writings just because someone else failed at something or you could be throwing out the best thing that could have happened in your life.

I'll state again one of the rules I personally live by, "Eat the meat and spit out the bone."

Couldn't agree more. It is a fact that people are unique and what worked for one may or may not work for other. It bothers me to see the self-help industry offers one answer fits all solution. The buyer has to take them with an open mind. If it works, take it and if it does not work, through it out.

I would think that someone who is satisfied wouldn't be attracted to those types of books in the first place.

The problem with the guy from Acres of Diamonds is that he was looking for something in the wrong place.

If you're reading personal development books just because you want more just for the sake of more then you're on a troubling path.

However, if you read personal development books to learn about yourself, what makes you fulfilled in life, and then do that then you are on a great track.

Personal development books are not the end. They are merely the beginning of life change. As Jim Rohn would say, the books are the information. Thats where we need to start.

Breathing is dangerous because one day you will run out of breath and die. Don't do it Anything can hurt of harm you. All depends how you choose to look at it.

The individual decides if personal development helps or hurts them. It's one person's perspective.

BTW someone never takes a risk. They give themselves a chance.

      You're very welcome .

Acres of Diamonds is a great parable with a profound message. I have found myself reflecting on it numerous times already. Think I listened to it 3 times as well now.

Personal development books cannot by themselves be a threat to anyone. It is what they make of it and how they understand and take the essence of the book that is of more importance. You give pearls of wisdom to a fool and he will not be able to see what you are saying. But you give the same to a saint he will immediately see what you are talking about.

Recently one of my friend told to me that the husband of his wife's friend 'an expatriate job worker' used to attend personal development sessions and he frequently participated in speeches too, later; he decided to quit the job and to go back to his country to start personal development institute. And, he did what he planned -- but within a year he went bankrupt and now trying to regain and repenting on his mistake of leaving the job.

I'm not against personal development books, otherwise I would have left this forum...but, I think the books should have a disclaimer telling people to exercise caution in making life changing decisions. Failing in life is a factor of many aspects such as (lack) of discipline, hard work, exploiting opportunities at right time, constantly learning and updating your product and yourself, good marketing, etc, etc. and all these are critical factors and someone not following a good system will see results in poor light.

no i don't think Personal development books are a threat to a safe life, however they become so if they are going one day to make you suspicions about your true self in a way that make you believe that your traits are far from someone who is goign to be successful, at that point throw them and believe in yourself only.
