Generally goal setting is done categorically. Such as Goals in Wealth, Work, A Hobby, Relationship, whatever.

Create a vision of what you want, and why you want it. Create a goal to achieve that will bring what you want into your life. Once again, you need to understand why you want it, in order for your goal to be motivating enough for you to actually grow and achieve it.

Under each goal you create, you should create objectives, or smaller criteria that must be met before your over arching goal can come to fruition.

Under each objective is where you break it down further into steps you must take to accomplish that objective. Action Items stem from this which can be poured into a To-Do List.

    Purpose/Desire ->Goal->Objective->Action Items

Make sure your goal is clear, precise as possible, quantifiable, actionable, and has a way to measure progression towards that goal.

Tracking goals in a corporate environment... Create a todo list then go back down the list and give weights to each task. Then do them. My last job was in '99 working for Adobe Systems (yes that one). And they used to tell us that one all the time.

My background is military and we always use something from the Ranger Handbook which is a reverse timeline. For instance if you've got a series of tasks to reach a goal, instead of planning forward towards the goal plan in reverse from when the goal should be completed.

If you want everything you need know about leadership check out the US Army Ranger Handbook. I've kept it in my desk for 15 years.

    Best of luck!

For me goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Don't set goals which you think very impossible for you.

That is very good advice, however make your goals aggressive or you will expect mediocrity and be satisfied with it.

First of all, Venus Cow says, "Make a list of all your goals then one by one set out to achieve them. Do not deviate. Anything is possible if you have the desire."

If your goal is to be thin eat less and exercise more..........see how it works?

      Hi Jim,

This is my first visit to the Warrior Forum. When your comment popped up in my "google alerts," I just had to reply. I'm an author, have been facilitating virtual mastermind groups since 2005, and I'm a certified coach - since 1998, long before most people even heard of business or personal coaches. (I'm not an Internet marketer, though I'm starting to market more and more on the Internet. I should probably start visiting these forums on a regular basis!)

As The Goal Diva, goal setting and goal achieving is my thing. Last year I wrote a book on goal setting. It's called "Burn Your Wish List! Stop Hoping for the Best and Start Planning for Success," and is available as a downloadable eBook. If you google "The Goal Diva" and find my main website, you can download a free audio there - it's a recording of a teleclass I did - and it should give you some good info on goal setting. I have a series of autoresponders attached to it that also provide some good info. I'll be posting a free teleclass series on goal setting very soon and would love to have you attend.

Lastly, I'm always open to emails and phone calls if there is any way I can help. I have a goal to turn 500 people into goal setters in the next 180 days and I'd love to help you be one of them.

All the best to you, Jim.

      Warmly,
      Valerie Taloni

write down your goals..dont limit yourself...Even if you dream 100 seemingly unrelated things, write them down. Start writing your top ten goals on a daily basis, you will see after a month, your goal list will become constant...Hope this helps..Good Luck...

The best method that has brought me my success in all areas of my life were these 3 simple steps:

-Find what outcome you want (i.e. your goal) - be specific
-Define the Assets that you need to get there - if you don't have the asset simply do the same process, where the outcome is your asset
-Find out what actionable steps need to be taken, and just do it!

as an example, say you want to create an online business that nets 15K a month or $500 a day, you have a product that sells for $50

    - Outcome: $500 a day on average or 10 sales
    - Assets needed: Website, Traffic, Converting Offer
    - Actionable steps: Craft a crushing offer, take care of the technical aspects of the website, drive traffic, convert, focus on customer support...

if you didn't have a product then you would do the same, whereby your outcome would be your product and so on...

It is really that simple.... you just need to create a map, visualize the outcome, and take ACTION!

I am a little more pragmatic than the others advice, I just put a task on writing that I need to do today to get a new client, other to get more online income and other to work less, and I just do one of each one EVERYDAY and I have an accountability partner, we email each other everyday what we did to accomplish that tasks, it has to be just one, but EVERYDAY.

    Hope it helps

I also think people should keep their list to three goals and actually get them done instead of a laundry list of ten which never get done. Keep your list short then get them done and move onto a new list. Also, connect goals to actions or else they are just dreams and fantasies. You need a plan to make them happen.

Goal setting has made a tremendous difference in my life. They have allowed me to achieve success, and to accomplish what I had previously only dreamed of, or wished for. And, for me, I consider being successful when I reach the objectivel I set. My goals kept me on track and, in some cases, they gave me hope. They allowed me to see not where I was today, but where I could be in the future. And, yes I faced challenges and obstacles, but I presevered, found ways around these challenges. I was determined. And when you are determined and when you stay focused it is amazing what you can achieve.

Goal setting is good, but Goals should be specific like what and how much you want. So that you can direct your activities towards goal achievement.

Goal setting is a process. Here are a few things you need to do:

    1. Write down your goal.
    2. Make a list (still using pen and paper) of the things that you will need
    to make your goal happen.
    3. Set down a time frame for reaching your goal. Make it realistic.
    4. Re-write the goal and make any changes that you may see necessary.

Realize that you can alter your goal, break it down into smaller chunks, change your time frames, etc.

This is super basic, but it is the core of how it works.

The way I would explain goal setting is: you take a dream you desire to achieve and give it a time frame to be accomplished. Be as specific as possible using words that mean something to your sense. This gives you a meaningful fire, making you more likely to see it through to completion.

You have to identify what is holding you back, what you currently have to work with, and what you need to acquire to accomplish the goal. After you identify your limitations and resources, you can develop a step-by-step plan to tackle the things that keep you from having the goal. Repeating the process until you get there seem to work every time

      Hi Brandon,

Woohoo! I love that you mentioned "you have to figure out what's holding you back." Every one of us has limiting behaviors and for the most part, if forced to think about it, we can easily identify those limiting behaviors. Once limiting behaviors are identified, the next step is to figure out the limiting thoughts that are causing that behavior, and then finally, to turn those limiting thoughts around.

For example, if someone wants to lose weight and it's not happening, she needs to determine what's holding her back. Let's say she identifies her limiting behavior to be that she doesn't exercise. The next question she should ask herself is "what's the excuse I make for myself when I don't exercise?" The answer (and the limiting thinking) might be "I don't have time." Once that limiting thinking is identified, the next step is to turn that thinking around.

The way we think determines the actions we take and the actions we take determine the results we get.

    Buy separate notebooks to record goals under 1-spiritual 2-financial 3-family 4-health 5-career 6-community etc,

write what you want to achieve. an easy example is to increase your income to x value and allot deadlines to all goals.

Generate 20ideas to that goal being set (as taught by Brain Tracy)

Generate 20 different ways you can set any of those ideas into motion

Track your progress by setting some physical visible milestone. I mean, if your goal is to burn fat 'check your weight regularly to see the resultant change' or if it's income see is it growing or stagnant.

I understood that a goal is like a coal and it has no value/utility unless and until it's put into fire similarly goal/s can do nothing if not moved by the force of action.

i guess that could work...but thats waaayyyy to much work...after buying all of those notebooks i would be done thinking about my goal already...

      here is a simplified method.

only set one goal at a time.
This will help cure procrastination so now you wont have that nagging at you.

set a specific time to complete the task.
here you want to be as detailed as possible.
      • set how much time you will allot yourself to complete the task(be specific 30mins, 4 hours etc, etc)
      • pick a specific day
      • pick a specific place
      • even pick what you'll do before and after you complete the task..(i have a girlfriend now so when i complete my task i already know whats going down in my bedroom...lol TMI oh well this is swaggs baby.
focus on nothing else but the task during the allotted time
so during the time you gave yourself to complete the task you can only focus on ...COMPLETING THE DAMN TASK!!! i mean aint that the point of setting up a specific time in the first place.

so dont be answering the phone, or reading facebook, or looking at porn. Just focus on finishing your goal.

      when its done, reward yourself..
i've read where people say you shouldn't reward yourself everytime you complete a task because you'll get used to it...thats dumb as hell

thats like saying dont give people their paycheck every week after they came to work did a good job and did what we asked them to do during the time we said do it, because they'll get used to it.

YES, people reward yourself when you accomplish your goals. from my experience this will help you work harder because you will be fighting to get that reward.

      I really hope this helps.

One goal at a time? Naaaawww.

I have four goals, active, at any given moment. In different facets of life. We each have many roles (ideally, about 3-4 roles), each of which need (and have) goals.

The day has 24 hours so that we can pursue these three-to-four goals. And that is life.

And that is bliss in the making.

You all have mentioned very good pointers but I'll just put in my two cents worth for whatever it matter to some but it has worked for me. I once heard a motivational speaker and a billionaire said some people if they set goals they're seldomly reached it's because of the terminology such as: I'll try, maybe and trying but if you start "Making It A Promise versus goal it's more than likely will occur sooner with visualization.

You can't look in a better place than the Franklin-Covey system. It takes time, up front, but is invaluable for the future. The Entire Future. :-)

And check our Stephen Covey's "7 Habits" and "First Things First."

No better place to start. They still have the market on Goal-Setting AND Goal-Achievement.

Create both long and short term goals, and always have actions which you can do now to take you closer to your long term goals.

You should always have something, anything to do right now to help you reach your goals...

When putting together a plan use the following:

Know what it is the 'end result' you're after.
You have to have a strong reason 'why' you want to get there.
The last step in the process is creating 'action steps', which of course have to be as specific as possible, but has to be attached to the end result.

In short: know the: 'WHAT', 'WHY', and 'HOW'.

      Good Luck!

Set goals. After setting your goals, how do you go about it? Start with setting your motivational goal -- something that motivates you to go out and get the things you want. New homes, automobiles, recognition, etc. Not money. But the things that money will alow us to have. Go out. Go to department stores. Go to hotels -- wherever you'll see your desired. Do this as often as you can and before you know it, you've attained your goal already!
