3 Tips for Exploring Your Talents

Much is made of developing your talents, but what if you never discover them? Many are buried under years of limiting beliefs and you need to explore your abilities for your talents to be uncovered.

Follow these Steps:

1 - Write out a list of what you believe to be your talents.

Ask questions of yourself and wait to be supplied with the answers.

2 - Ask others what talents they see in you.

Be careful with this one. Don't let others define your limits. Asking others can offer you a fresh perspective.

3 - Practice unearthing your talents by yourself. Don't worry, you are the performer and audience. Self-consciousness is a huge hurdle to overcome when discovering and expressing long latent talents.

How do you explore your talents?

  • When I explore what I'm good at, I use the same steps that described by Ryan, but I prefer to use a word 'passions' than 'talents' in my case.

I managed to discover what I can do and what I am good at by my history of life. People tell me I'm talented in those things, which I'm aware that I'm good at but I'm also aware that I'm not very passionate about them.

When I explore my passions, I think of what I LOVE doing (doesn't matter if I'm not good at it), something I don't bother doing for hours and hours, in fact I lose track of time, things that I continue doing even there is no reward at the end.

Finding out your passions isn't always easy. Like Ryan said, they've been often buried and cannot be discovered until you try exploring.

If you don't know what your talents are, my tip is to try searching for what you love doing.

I heard someone say that the average person has over 500 talents but I am not too sure how true that is....I don't know if they consider walking or the ability to run and smile etc a talent lol...if so then we could probably have 500

what do you all think? Is that a true quote?

Ryan's tips are great. What has to be kept in mind is that you have to be honest with yourself. And so do the others who you are going to ask to list your talents. They should not simply say something just to please you, or maybe to avoid hurting you. When you know what your talents are then you can begin working on them.

Thanks Ryan for getting it through so simply.

The most crucial tool for discovering my talents, as the natural result/out-pouring of Who I Am, was Temperament Typing. Check out a book like "Do What You Are." The classic tests are based on the research of Briggs-Meyer. Temperament Typing is about character (not "personality," like most psychological tests and personality profiles, which can change over time), and has over 2500 years of history and heritage. By comparison, Psychology as a science has less than 200 years under its belt.
Talents which flow from your deepest character--your temperament--are the ones that make you Who You Are.

That is so true. Thanks for this post. I'm sure it'll help many discover their talents.

Sometimes it can be hard to discover your talents while for others they know it straight out because they've noticed it in their daily activity.

Knowing your talents and gift can really help you gauge what you pursue.

Skills or talents? I have a lot of skills (I could probably come up with 500) but what is talent? Is it special to you or just a skill you've developed more than others? Maybe a question for another thread.

    I agree!

Self-limiting beliefs keep a LOT of people from enjoying their full potential.

Even moreso would be financial self-limiting beliefs. I know some people who don't think they deserve to make a certain amount of money. Even some family members think that because they haven't achieved a certain level of education that they shouldn't be as wealthy as others.

By eliminating these beliefs and focusing on the talents that have been given to you, I bet you'll find that you can do/be/see/achieve more than you ever thought possible!
