The Power Of Routine... (Is It Important?)

Hi Warriors,

I'd like to ask you a question today if that's ok?

Do you have a routine?

Most people do... some things that you do at set times, watering the garden, eating dinner, going to bed, whatever it is, then you do it without really thinking about it, and if you don't do it then you will notice.

Here's the thing...

Routine can be extremely beneficial to your online business.

If you can start a positive routine then you can effortlessly tap into the power of your subconscious mind that will help you not only to make sure you stick with the routine, but also get you mentally prepared for it so you are 'in the zone' when you sit down to get whatever it is done.

Now most people fail with this as they get all excited and plan all these things they are going to do...

...from 7 - 8 they are going to write three articles, from 8 - 9 they are going to drive traffic etc.. but the upshot is inevitably they crash and burn and give up after a few days.

So how do you start building a work-from-home routine?

The key is to build it up slowly, first of all choose ONE thing, just one thing that you will do EVERY single day (or every day you work if you can't work everyday).

Then make sure you get that done like clockwork every day... if you miss a day then beat yourself up a little bit, but don't give up, just gloss over it and it will start to become a routine and will get easier and easier to do consistently.

Then once you have that down, you can add in another thing to do, just one thing again... if you keep that up then very soon not only will you have a solid routine but the progress you make will be unbelievable...

... And the satisfaction and pride you'll achieve will be immeasurable!

Albert Einstein said...

"The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest"

... well that compound interest applies to compound action as well!

Why?

ANSWER : The results start to build up exponentially... just like compund interest.

Here's the crux of my opinion..

... it is best to stick to a time that you will do something, but second best is to allocate something as the first thing you do, just make sure you stick to that and don't check your email first or you'll get sucked in and forget all about what you were supposed to do!

Just some thoughts I've written down in the hope it will help some warriors increase their productivity.

Garry.

P.S. Thoughts?

If you have a routine, you have direction. You won't start your day by wondering what you should do and when. You will avoid becoming, as my mom used to say, a "wandering decimal point."

The key is knowing when you are especially productive and then focus your efforts in that timeframe until they become a habit. You will know this when you feel uncomfortable about doing anything else.

For example, I established a routine of focusing my efforts and getting work done during the afternoon and early evening. There's no question in my mind on what I must do every day. That's the power of routine.

Routine can be good or bad, usually depending on the size of it. That is, how much it impedes or promotes freedom--which is often the ultimate thermometer of "success."
Rituals are highly valuable to happiness, in that they provide momentary structure and confidence to the day (cf. Tal Ben-Shahar's Happier). Routine, however, can become wooden, tedious and counter-productive if allowed to grow and overtake the day.

“When I came home from work I sat down and I forced myself to code for a hour or 2. The enemy was thinking, whenever I paused or started to think I would force myself to type something, its amazing how much you can get done when you just type."
And he (at least in 2006) earned around $10,000 a day through Adsense

So I believe in the power of routine...

Routine is absolutely essential to my business. When you have a real "job", someone else pushes a routine on you. That exact routine may not be ideal, but having no routine when you start working for yourself can only lead to bad results.

I agree that you should take things one step at a time. When I've tried to create too many new habits in my life at once, they've almost always all failed. Choosing one new thing, and making sure you stick to that day after day until it becomes habit, really is the best way to go about it.

It really depends on the person you're talking about.

If you are disciplinated, then you can live without a strict routine.
However, you if are like me then without a strict routine your productivity can lower more than 50% because most of the time you don't really know what to do and you will rather do something else.

I totally agree that routine is KEY to success and not just in business. It makes everything flow so much better. I need it or I feel 'off' and end up getting NOTHING accomplished.

I totally agree from the perspective of online business and work. But spiritual-wise you would be better without any routine. That's what a true warrior does, he stalks himself and breaks his routines so that he can never be the prey.

I personally like routine as it keeps me focused. At the same time, routine can become mundane. At times I need to mix things up a bit, but stay on track.

I completely agree with you. I just find it very hard to always stick to doing things when it comes to internet marketing.

Because, let's say it's "i build 5 backlinks every day", then I have to go and find 5 places to get backlinks from every single day. At the beginning this may be very easy, but it will get harder and harder the more I do it.
Or creating content. I feel like there's no need to write more articles about a subject that I have already covered. After having dedicated a whole website to motivation, which topics should I cover in new articles, when I have covered everything that matters in the articles that I wrote already?

Apart from that, I agree that habits or routines are a very very powerful thing.

    Good post! Thanks!

I think it's also helpful to remember that when we "fall off the wagon" and break our routine, it's not the end of the world and we shouldn't give it up. It's kind of like a sail and the wind. We may get blown off course, so we just have to re-align our sails and continue on towards the goal.

    All the best,
    Thom

This is true because it's hard to become successful after doing things sparingly! A great routine will help create great results. I get up in the morning, eat breakfast and get to work and when I'm done, things become a lot more easier each day.

Another reason routine is so important is because it simply develops discipline. Consistency is a key factor in success. I mean, everyone wants to be successful. But wouldn't you rather be consistently successful?

    There's freedom in the routine!

Scheduling your time allows you to dictate what you will or won't work on right now. That means you can make the best use of your time possible while still knowing at the end of the day that you've done everything you can for your business!

Well - my newest attempt at a routine is to post enough in the warrior forum to be allowed to post in the other rooms! LOL

So this interests me - its true! Without a routine I am not developing the habits of discipline nedcessary to move forward ( or learn how to type either.. )
