What's YOUR Motivation?

What motivates YOU to work hard and earn some money?

Is it to help put food on the table for your family?

Maybe you're saving up for a house?

Perhaps you're afraid of losing your job and want to build a second income?

For me, whenever I really need to get motivated (which I should do more often I think), I'll just Google something like

unemployment rate
jobs lost
us debt
us savings rate

... then reading things like these help motivate me to remember that this world is a TOUGH place. Millions of people (including my beautiful wife) are out of work even though they're highly capable!

DO NOT STOP! Do not lose your motivation!

You won't go anywhere sitting on the couch watching TV, playing computer games (I had to delete them from my comp- BIG distraction), etc. remembering the good ol' days when you "tried" internet marketing.

So again- what's your motivation?

  • Hi AYoungMillionair,

Sounds like your motivation comes from tough things. For me, it's opposite. My motivation comes from happy things in my life. Love for my husband, positive minds, powerful people, a wag of a dog's tail, basically every happy things happen in my life. I guess I'm greedy for happiness, I want to keep them and I want them more. I'd say it's pretty hard to lose my motivation because it's in short, my life!

I think you are the exception rather than the norm. I make a living studying personal success and motivation and I have dealt with many people dealing with these issues. Almost EVERYONE is much more strongly driven by negative motivation. Avoiding pain. I think everyone has positive things they aspire towards but the strongest form of motivation is avoiding bad things.

I know I have had my most successful months in business when money was REALLY tight. I had no choice but to generate revenue and it forced me to focus and work so hard...that I created the opportunities and I made the money. When money is good, I notice I take my foot off the accelerator a bit. Although, as I gain more experience this seems to be an area I am improving on quite a bit.

The fact that my 2 dogs think they deserve food every day motivates me. I heard someone say, If you had a gun to your head and you had to make money in the next 48 hours what would you do... That visual might be enough to motivate people.

My motivation comes from a deep need to feel like I am contributing something to my marriage. My husband has been the only one working for the past few years and while it has been enough, it took a toll on my self esteem because I felt like I was always taking from him. He doesn't feel that way about it and he does enjoy being the provider but I need to do something if I want to feel good about myself.
So far, making money online has been working wonders for my self esteem and I am grateful to people like all of you who are relentlessly supportive of each other

Tal Ben-Shahar, in his book Happier, cites this spectrum and balance betwee "moments enjoyed" and "moments of effort" as the key to lasting happiness. The challenge overcome is part of what makes the enjoyment complete.
    It's well worth the read.
He also shows the spectrum and balance between "enjoyment in the present" and "future happiness," again pointing to the principle that if you are doing what you love, the effort and challenges involved are integral to the overall sense of peace and happiness you live with, day by day.

I think what drains our motivation is also what powers our motivation -- ironically.

    Fear.

It all depends on the context you give it to your scenario!

I think to CONTROL fear you've got to be able to rationalize it. For example, I live at home with my parents and I'm currently facing the very real prospect of them moving to France -- the house is sold subject to the prospects selling their house. (By the way I live in England and I NOT going to France)

So initially I felt overwhelmed and stressed. But then I asked myself, what's the worst that could happen? I have family I can stay with. When you have a sense that you can get over your worst fear it allows you to moderate it. And actually be able to leverage that fear to help you take action.

I think you've always got to have a spiritual foundation, it's vitally important that you always 'feel' as though you have a base in the world, even if your physical base has been taken away.

I've nurtured the philosophy that the 'world' is my base. Sounds crazy I know. But now I'm secure in myself that noone can suddenly remove my base whether that be my home or my job.

And that security will result (i hope in courage that makes me successful and fullfilled in life

My family motivates me. I want to be able to take them to school, pick them up, take them to practice, etc without having to ask for permission from a boss. It is seriously hard having a day job and a busy family! Not for me (a day job that is)! So I bust my butt to make sure I do not HAVE to have a day job!

I have to admit that's another source of my motivation. Right now I do have a day job (its our main income stream), but I HATE all the meetings, politics, etc. and that's another thing that motivates me to work hard.

I know that 1 hour of time spent on IM can yield much better end results in my life than a 1 hour meeting where people just chat and babble...

Unless that 1 hour meeting is with a multi-millionaire IMer :-)

My motivation is that i never want to have to go to another job interview again and be asked ridiculous questions like "give us an example of a time when you were faced with a challenge, and tell us how you overcame that challenge...blah blah blah", or "give us an example of a time when you used your initiative". I really hate job interviews lol, heopfully my online ventures will go to plan and i'll never have one again!

What really helps me stay motivated, it is the support of my family and friends... Unfortunately there are days that I'm really lazy, but with good company and some jokes, everything goes!

i always want to get a better life ...
my God, my family and friends keep me motivated!

sometimes i get lazy and i think take a vacation or refreshing is not a bad idea, but don't take it too long because too much of something is not good.
