What is a Belief?

A belief is simply an idea that you know longer think about. An idea you no longer scrutinize, an idea you accept as true--as fact--as the truest representation of reality. The amazing thing about our beliefs is they create the world we live in now.

Most people believe their beliefs are based on facts--which is just another belief.

When I was a kid Pluto was a planet--that was a fact.

Ask any learned person in the world and they would report with absolute certainty that Pluto was the ninth and outermost planet in our solar system.

Well, as it turns out that the term "planet" wasn't even defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) until August 24, 2006!

Clearly, sometimes even our collective "beliefs" aren't based on "facts"...and facts are just our current beliefs anyway.

Now, if I'm the first to bring you the news then brace yourself--Pluto is no longer a planet! We now only have eight planets in our solar system (seriously, look it up).

Through the power of belief we've made a planet disappear. Did it disappear? No. We now just believe it to be something else--which is the same thing isn't it? A planet disappeared. There were nine planets before and now there are eight--that is a fact. I suppose you could say there used to be a planet exactly where Pluto is, either way--it's gone--a whole planet is gone!

Ask any learned person in the world and they will report with absolute certainty that Neptune is the eighth and outermost planet in our solar system...or is that just what they believe?

What you believe to be true now about yourself and the world can be heard every time that voice inside says "I can." or "I can't.".

This is the voice of the beliefs you currently hold.

Listen to what the voice says carefully.

Does your voice say? "I am successful everytime I try something new.", "I am grateful.", "I am confident.", "I am at peace.", "I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.", "My life is in harmony.", "I am wealthy.", "I am loved by so many." "I am financially successful.", "I have the best friends.", "I live in great abundance."

A positive voice in your head creates emotions which inspire your action towards success.

Does your voice inspire you to accomplish the things you desire?

How to Coach Yourself to Accomplish Any Goal

What you currently believe created the world around you NOW. To change your circumstances or situation you MUST first change a BELIEF about yourself or the world you live in.

To make a change you have to first believe you can--you know that. Tell yourself the right messages to accomplish any goal in life!

"I no longer smoke", "My life is full of opportunities.", "I have complete financial freedom", "I am happy with my life", "I am healthy ", "I am in the best shape ever.", "I am peaceful", "I am loved and supported by my family and friends".

What you hear said most often--becomes your belief.

You can change all or any part of the world you see now by changing your beliefs--after all you are powerful enough to make a planet disappear in an instant.
What is Self Talk?

"Self Talk is our internal dialogue, our thoughts. It is those thoughts, positive or negative, that end up shaping our lives and results in the decisions we make, personally and professionally. Positive Self Talk facilitates adjustments and change, making for an easier transition. Our Self Talk will be the barometer for the relationships we're in and the careers we choose."

Susan Samakow, PCC, CPCC
Certified Business & Life Coach
How Does Self Talk Work?

Your belief creates your emotions and motivates your actions toward your success. Anything you will ever accomplish begins with a belief you create and then hold in your mind.

Highly successful people have an incredible ability to manifest their ideas. Their ability to self-motivate creates unstoppable self-belief. They can because they believe they can.

TELL YOURSELF YOU CAN--AND YOUR POWERFUL MIND WILL MAKE IT SO!
How Do I Use Self Talk Work to Accomplish ANY Goal?

1. Expose your mind to transitional statements

To prepare your powerful mind to adopt a new perspective repeatedly expose yourself to transitional statements, such as: "I never ..." and "I no longer ..."

"I never eat junk food." "I no longer smoke."

2. Expose your mind to inspirational statements

Align youself with the feelings of already having what you desire. Envision living the life you want! Paint a completely new picture of yourself and any aspect of your life: career, relationships, financial success and then create it!

"Self-talk is a way to override our past negative programming by erasing or replacing it with conscious, positive new directions."

Shad Helmstetter, Ph. D.

Repeatedly expose yourself to inspirational statements from your new life, such as: "I am ..." "I am financially independent.", "I am living my dreams.","I am in the best shape ever!"

And watch your dreams become your reality!

You can believe something and endure the belief without ever seeing it manifest. Sometimes believing isn't enough, FAITH is the key that helps make any belief become more real than anything in your life.

they say that repetition plus action equals results; in other words when you worry about something you repeat it over and over and over. Its the same way with positive statements (affirmations); if you want something; your goals, dreams, whatever - you need to tell yourself every day - the same thing - over and over and over ; but unlike 'the Secret' which had us 'believe' that all we had to do was wish and we would manifest ; we need to take appropriate action; but on a daily basis - just like cleaning your teeth every day - tell yourself your dreams, goals (always in the present tense - the subconscious doesn't have a sense of humour or understand 'tomorrow' - if you say success is just around the corner that's where it will stay - if you say I am a phenomenal success - and you repeat that every single day pretty soon you will be - as long as you are working toward that success ; positive statements become beliefs plus appropriate action will bring your goals to fruition.

Belief and faith are the core elements that allow us to take inspired action, and this isn't just some metaphysical "pie in the sky" theory - test this theory out next time you're facing an unpleasant quantifiable task by adopting different attitudes (positive/negative) before doing it, and then measuring your performance afterwards. I know the results will very clearly reflect the value of having a positive belief system.

You read about this sort of thing all the time and most people ignore it. If you can make belief real by manipulating the subconscious then it is a fantastic thing to have. Good post.

I believe that is probably a paraphrase of the original "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Ouch. Sorry I didn't cite chapter and verse.

It's Hebrews 11:1... and it's not a paraphrase. (Though the NIV reads, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope, and certain of what we do not see.") The "original" is in Greek, so I'm not going to quote, or translate it, here right now. But would be happy to, for anyone who really wants a contemporary translation by a real person. The NIV is pretty good. The KJV, in this unusual case, is even better.

(I don't try to improve on the inspired words of the Big Guy!) ;-)

I get it. This is amazing.

To believe in yourself is to believe in a fact. If your belief is that you are a successful internet marketer, then that belief (to be accepted as fact) will have to be manifested in reality.

    Then the planet analogy.

And the other side of belief arise: Doubt ...over the time gap between the two, between the belief and reality, is that flying gnat called doubt. the circumstance of reality changes. thus reality sideswipes your belief-mobile.

Conclusion. keep believing in yourself. never never stop. though doubt is bolstered by reality, Belief is more powerful than reality.

Pluto is still a planet to me.

To get those beneficial beliefs ingrained in your subconscious mind it is very helpful to do EFT. You can download the free manual from their site: eftuniverse (dot) com, where it says 'Get Started Free' on the left hand side column.
Another thing you can do is record affirmations (always in positive and in the present tense) recorded and listen to them as soon as you wake up or just before falling asleep (in Alpha -Theta mode).
That is the moment where you conscious mind is more relaxed and your subconscious mind is more receptive.
It will be even more effective if you record a progressive relaxation first. You can probably find recordings online.
Our beliefs are in our subconscious mind, so that is what we need to work on.
It is nearly useless to consciously make yourself believe in something if you have the opposite believe in your subconscious mind.
For example: you can say to yourself 'I attract abundance', but if your subconscious have beliefs such as: 'I can't make a lot of money', 'I don't deserve it', 'I wasn't born in the right environment', 'I need to work very hard to have some money'.., there is a contradiction in you.
When there are conflicting beliefs THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND ALWAYS WIN.
Some people say you can change your beliefs through repetition, but it really takes a long time and will power. Most people give up before they can see a change.
Nowadays there are faster ways to change one's beliefs such as EFT, Hypnotherapy, work with a coach...
My advice is that if you really want to improve yourself use any tools to speed up the process.
You can't change the outside if you don't change the inside.

Thank you everyone this is great food for thought!

Our minds are one of the most fantastic inventions ever and the exciting part
is we are learning - evolving everyday through out thoughts, choices and actions.
Who we are now is different to the person you will be tomorrow as time does not stand still.

Love the talk about faith and emotion...so true.

Adding faith and emotion to a belief helps take it from a thought to a reality, least that's my opinion.

I get what you're saying, but I think this is a bad example. As Shakespeare said "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet".

The issue with Pluto wasn't a wrong "belief" it was just that as our telescopes improved we started finding more and more planetoids. We had to change the classification system for what consitutes a planet purely because our previous lack of a definition would mean that we'd now have hundreds of extra "planets" in the solar system.

By changing the title that we give Pluto it doesn't make it any less real: it's still there, just as it has been for 4.5 billion years (and will be for at least another 5 billion), it's just that we categorize it differently.

    ...

Actually... Perhaps your analogy is more right that you probably meant it to be:

We will always be the person we are. The only thing that can change is, just like Pluto, how other people perceive us.

The question we need to ask ourselves is:

Do we want to be perceived as one of the big players (up there with Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) or are we happy to be a vague planetoid? Does it matter?
