Top 3 Things Holding You Back

I'm curious as to what YOUR top 3 things are that are (or have been) holding you back from moving forward with your business in a powerful and successful way.

I'll get this started. For me they definitely are or have been:

1. Procrastination (always being busy doing 'something' and even working 12-14 hour days but not really working towards making an income)

2. Not having a clear, written and achievable Plan (including a business plan)

3. Lack of support system (mentor or accountability partner)

I also will add a 4th: Way too many low quality how-to manuals out there to weed through, not enough quality content.

Actually, I'll add a 5th: Low self image, i.e. confidence.

What about you? What's holding you back? What would make your life so much easier?

I just have one thing that is holding back. What? I have not identified that single usual or unusual idea that will make me have that extraordinary business breakthrough that I desire.

The top of my list would have to be procrastination. Second would be lack of a specific plan. Third is always feeling like I've missed the boat. I've also had many efforts in the past turn out completely fruitless and I am a little concerned that might happen again.

I tend to over plan then look back at the plan to tweak it all the while not executing the plan till I feel perfection is met. Now knowing I do this, I have set limits and deadlines on myself to curb the activity . So there is an element of wheel spinning here an procrastination.

My biggest problem is not knowing what to do now that I know what I want to do. I want to do affiliate marketing. I've researched so many different programs that my head hurts and don't know what's legit and what isn't.

I think that too much information and not enough knowledge to know how to use the information is my problem. Procrastination is also right up there too.

I can totally related! Here are some questions I asked myself when I was at a real low point in life. This was 15 years ago, in fact I was on my death bed, literally, and I asked myself what I would bring to the world if I had more time. Perhaps they help you too:

      1. It's the end of my life, what are the 3-5 things I am truly proud of?
      2. Whom have I worked with all my life? What did was my average customer like? How old were they? Who were they in life? What did they bring to the table?
      3. What are 3-5 things that leave me in absolute bliss every day? What leaves my customer in bliss every day?
      4. What do my customers say about me (apply wishful thinking here)?
      5. What can I improve right now to attract this customer?

I think the thing that ended up being my big ticket was the very thing that was the biggest thorn in my life growing up. Often this is our biggest fear. What is that for you? I bet if you turned that around you'll have found the diamond in the rough.

I can definitely relate! At the same time I want to encourage you that 'what is yours is yours and cannot be taken from you.' So if it as taken from you it was yours to begin with. I believe that people are so unique that they are the only ones able to bring to the table the thing they've come here for. So it's not an outward journey to find that 'thing' outside of you, but a journey inward to see what you can bring forth from within. And there shall be no competition for you.

Mine is definitely spending too much passive time slowly completing my tasks instead of actively prioritizing those goals and setting deadlines. For example, if I set off to blog comment to build some backlinks, I might get distracted and spend an hour surfing around without doing anything productive.

I know what I need to do, but since I don't have the support of any other workers, I sometimes don't get hard enough on myself.

I see that a lot in my business planning courses! People come with amazing ideas, they finish an awesome plan only to find out that they need a quarter million dollars just to open the doors. It can drive many to give up on their plans, which is just too bad because money is just one aspect to making a business work.

I always tell my class that the 'how' is not our business, the 'how' is the domain of the Universe. Our only job is to get CLEAR with what we want, put it in writing and open our arms to receiving the help wherever it comes from (and it usually comes in the most unusual ways).

Hold on to the DREAM always seeing it a reality (money's not worth holding onto to, it's just a means like your computer or cell phone is).

    1) Lack of Action

    3) Lack of support ( a mentor maybe or someone that you could consult as some information are not always clear in words or videos)

I would say for me the top things that hold me back are:

    1. Procrastination - always making up excuses outside of my own means to blame my procrastination on like its some force against me not letting me accomplish my goals

    2. Ambition/Drive - so many times will I be driven to accomplish a goal when I'm not actively working on it, once I sit down to achieve the goal I get off track and become less driven or ambitious (definitely need to work on that)

    3. Unorganized - being so scattered with what I want to get done that either nothing gets done or everything gets done 25% of the way, which in the end might as well have not gotten done at all...

Staying organized, focused and pushing yourself to get things done will definitely pay off we all just have to re-work our minds to be long term thinkers and realize everything we do now will effect us months down the road...

What are the three things holding me back?
    1. Laziness - It's the devil if you want to get things done. But we all have it
    2. Diversions - Facebook, a new shiny online marketing product or method or other diversions. I hate them. It encourages my laziness
    3. Planning too much - Yeah I am one of those people who plan too much ahead. In fact, I have made plans for 4 years from now. I am that addicted to planning. Crazy, I know.

I would say that the biggest challenge is actually find a mentor. There are a lot of people calling themselves like it but to find someone truly committed to your success, it can be quite hard. Once you find the right mentor, it's like time traveling to your successful future, you reach success and you reach it FAST!

If your current environment bugs you, getting a detached workspace is one of the most profitable things you can do. It is firmly on my Top-5 list over actions that have resulted in the highest impact on my effectivity.

It has helped me focus and treat my IM involvement as a business. "As a business" should include a lot of tracking, accounting and performance monitoring of what works, and what is bleeding you. "Going to the office" makes it so much easier to slip into this mindset.

"Office" can be anything from a dedicated spot in the basement to a rented space downtown, whatever works for you. Did wonders for me.

    1. Time
    2. Time
    3. Time

    Those are all slightly different.

    1. there's not enough time so i hesitate to start anything major and end up doing loads of small things that amount to nothing

    2. fear that i might actually waste the small amount of time that i have, so I spend more time worrying about whether I'm using my time wisely(!)

    3. and when i have time i tend to work on projects that i *know* are going to pay me money right now, rather work on building an IM empire that might not actually ever happen...

I can totally relate. Ten years ago I wanted to get into real estate investing and posted an ad on Craigslist for a mentor. I got one reply from someone saying "your mentor will appear when you're ready." I remember being insulted because there I had just placed an ad, of course I was ready! But I later realized that s/he meant. When I finally was committed to my own success first and nothing and no one was going to stop me, rather than wanting someone else to hold me by the hand, more than one mentor showed up. I think a mentor wants to spend time with people that are unstoppable in every way, people that don't let anything get in their way, no even themselves.

Yes, with a teenager out of high school and looking for work and a dog that constantly wants to be pet I am totally with you! We share one car and so I couldn't even get an office if I wanted to, but I certainly have been thinking along the same lines these past few weeks.

Couldn't agree with you more! I definitely think Procrastination is a national epidemic and yet it's only one of the ripples of the bigger issue at hand. The rock that caused the ripples in the first is of course long buried underneath the surface. It's basic cause and effect principle.

Procrastination, for whatever reasons, seems to be a big one for most people. So I went to AskOxford to see where the word stems from. Here is what it says:

      Origin:
late 16th century: from Latin procrastinat- 'deferred until tomorrow', from the verb procrastinare, from pro- 'forward' + crastinus 'belonging to tomorrow' (from cras 'tomorrow')

In reading this it makes me wonder if 'deferred until tomorrow' might have related to a repayment of debt of some kind and over time we simply 'twisted' its use a bit.

I think people are often stuck because of past trauma, an old story that somehow hooked into us and we have built our life around this certain pain or discomfort. Kind of like a pearl that starts as a grain of sand that hurts the creature, over time and with enough layers there is a pearl (so women adorn themselves with something pretty that is laid over grains of sand).

So we too might look busy (really busy, even exhausted) but this busy-ness is just like the laying of layers of pearl around the real issue...Interesting concept.

What if we refused to spin the pearl by adding layer after layer and instead removed layers one by one until we found the grain of sand that caused the procrastination in the first place? We'd be truly unstoppable!

Correction: I looked up the exact cause for pearl creation. Here's what Wikipedia says:

Pearls are formed inside the shell of certain mollusks as a defense mechanism against a potentially threatening irritant such as a parasite inside its shell, or an attack from outside, injuring the mantle tissue...The combination of aragonite and conchiolin is called nacre, which makes up mother-of-pearl. The commonly held belief that a grain of sand acts as the irritant is in fact rarely the case. Typical stimuli include organic material, parasites, or even damage that displaces mantle tissue to another part of the mollusk's body. These small particles or organisms gain entry when the shell valves are open for feeding or respiration.

I think we often have our hearts open towards people or situations and when we get hurt we too build a defense mechanism around the real issue, hence procrastination.

I find myself easily distracted by shiny objects, e-mails, various e-books, etc. i think part of the reason is I don't feel that I have found that one focus to concentrate on to develop some sales. I go one direction for awhile and then change direction if I see something that interests me. With so much conflicting advice out there I'm not confident in going in a specific direction. It seems I'm always looking for that "aha" moment that causes me to take off, but I'm working on it.

Procrastination and priorization definately would be something to improve, and the evergrowing amout of (mis)information isn't helping. Sometimes you just really have to stop and think for a moment that is the stuff you're doing getting you anywhere, or would it be better to close those 50 browser tabs and focus on something actually important.

Wow, I'm impressed with all of your responses and insights! Thank you for participating so willingly.

It looks like procrastination, overload of information and fear of not achieving something important may top the list overall.

I appreciate Ryan's one pointer: belief - whether it's belief that we are limited or unlimited.

I completely agree. I see limiting belief like the lid on the box that I need to kick off to get out of the box and be free. Sometimes the lid is so heavy that we need a bit of help from fellow travelers.

In the past I used affirmations that started with "I am successful" but that devil's advocate voice right after chimed in saying "no, you're not." Nowadays my affirmations start with "I love it when...I am successful" and I find that the voice has nothing to say... Think about it, try it. It might work wonders for you too.

Hopefully this post encourages everyone to prioritize their tasks while keeping their long term goals in laser focus. You will get there!
