It's Been 7 Years Since I Got Off The Streets...

I thought I’d write this to encourage others that don’t feel life and the Internet Marketing game is going too well for them….

7 years ago I had a nice car, a nice flat, a lovely wife. Life was good. One day when I least expected it I found out my wife was having an affair. I was very upset. I packed a bag and in complete shock I walked out. I never went back.

I was too proud to tell my friends, my parents had moved out of the country. All I wanted was a drink. I found a drink shop and bought a couple of bottles of strong cheap port. I walked for a while then went into the park. I was pretty drunk by then and fell asleep but was awoken by three men kicking and punching me. They took my bag of clothes and my wallet. All I had then was what I had on.

From then on my life followed a similar downward pattern. I would beg by day and drink by night. I would sleep in bushes after the first night to stay away from others. Many of the homeless formed gangs to steal and to stay safer. I’d been homeless for a month when I was lynched by a large gang of homeless guys. They literally beat me until I just couldn’t move. My eyes were swollen shut. I thought they’d stopped when I felt someone lift my top up. All I remember was this awful stinging sensation down my chest. I heard them going and managed to crawl away. My chest was wet but I didn’t want to touch it as I thought they’d chucked acid on me. As I came out of the park and into the street light I realised it wasn’t acid. With a knife, glass or some other sharp tool they cut my chest from the left side of my chest to below my belly button. I was dripping blood everywhere. It’s amazing how many people walk past a man that’s clearly just been beaten almost to death but luckily there was an angel. One lady came up and called me an ambulance.

Hospital was a nice time for me, nice regular food, comfy bed and cups of tea but you can’t stay forever and I went back to where I was. This time I kept my head really low.

After another month I was walking to find a good begging spot when someone shouted my name. I looked round and to my horror it was a good friend of mine “Rich, what the f*** are you doing? Where have you been? You’re coming with me mate!”

With a bit of force he frogmarched me back to his house and in no uncertain terms “ordered” me to stay until I was back on my feet. I got in his shower and it hit me that where I had been was my rock bottom and that moment was life turning a corner. In a week I got myself a crap job cleaning offices but it was money, I also found a room to rent. It was during my stay at my friends that I found an article on Internet Marketing. It intrigued me and like a lot of people I was sucked in by the promises of gazillions, fast cars and palm tree’s. With my wages I bought quite a lot of crap but I did save up for my own laptop. After 2 years I was still in my room and still doing the job-However I was also a lot more knowledgeable about the IM world. The problem was I wasn’t taking action. I was learning but not doing what I was learning. So after 2 years I finally took the plunge.

In that third year I made about £6000, which to me at the time was a major achievement but I’d made a lot of mistakes that had cost me, but they had taught me many valuable lessons.

In year four I made enough to leave my job and rent a one bed flat. I was now full time with this. Over the last three years I can’t believe what’s happened. I’m not going to sit here and boast, that’s a waste of your time. What’s strange is thinking that in just 7 years you can change your life beyond all recognition. I have tonnes of money making sites and I’ve just acquired a big envelope company with a mailing list of 8000 buyers and all the stock.

Next year I’m moving to Australia. If there’s one lesson I’d like to pass on it’s got to be this…

No matter what happens in life you are still in control. Every moment you take action you are setting about the motions of change. Every second that goes by when you are taking action brings you closer to your dream.

I like the scar down my chest now. It’s a great reminder for me, not just how low you can go but what you can achieve.

    Hi, Richard Van,

It is great that you were able to over-come. Glad you survived, and even managed to progress! Hopefully, I can do the same, if necessary. I am real close to being homeless.

In my time, which is long, I have known some others that have succeeded. Some were destitute beforehand, most were not. The thing that was prevalent with all of them, after they did succeed, is they did not ever 'bother' to try and help other's, after the fact.

Congratulations again, but, with your success, I hope you can find a way to help other's, even if only in a small way, that are were you were at. Your telling of that experience is a step to wards that, so, thank you for the words. (And forgive me if you are already doing that.)

Really amazing, wild story. You should write a book, make movie or something. It remindes me on one of Jodie Foster's movies.

I allways complain about my country, but I can't imagine living in country with gangs walking around, to walk in fear late at night when you walk alone, brrr. I love my country.

      Thanks for the kind replies.

Fact is the reason I told this story was because a fellow warrior became homeless recently and the forum really rallied around her. It made me think of those days again and made me realise that its a good message to share.

To cyop, if you're getting close to being homeless I wish I could help you personally. Believe it or not I actually give money to people in the same park I was in when I was homeless, I'm probably giving it to the same guys that did me in. I can assure you being homeless isn't something I'd ever forget and I cringe every time I see a tramp knowing what his/her lifes like. I'll PM you my skype name, you can call me and see if we can get a plan going for you.

To Hatdance I very much know what my friend did for me. I paid for his honeymoon last year and I've done a whole lot more too. Potentially I owe him my life, anything could have happenned had he not seen me. Believe me not a day goes by I don't think about what he did.

      Hi Damz,

Well I haven't actually said what I earned but it's a lot more than I could ever get with a job (in my circumstances, I'd never be a lawyer for example!). There are huge amounts of people here who earn a lot more than me. I basically find niche markets and use Samurai to find high traffic, low and un-internet marketing savvy competiton and then find solutions to their problems by either creating a product or becoming an affiliate. I sell digital and physical products. The envelope company is my first attempt at actually holding stock and managing an e-commerce site.

The best advice I can offer is to just get on and try something. If you fail, who cares, thats part of life. Just keep trying until you succeed.

I'm certainly not sure it's film or book material but it does go to show that when you decide something and commit to it you can achieve almost anything.

It also goes to show that where you are now is just that - where you are now. It's not where you'll be forever and you have a choice and the ability to change it if it's not to your liking.

Thats very kind of you. However I would never have anyone write anything for me for free though. It would make a nice story though and if it helps others I would certainly consider it. It would be good to hand out to people in the same place I was once in.

            No worries, Richard.

As you can confirm from the thoughts of other Warriors, you have a powerful and moving story. If you ever decide to reach out and share this with a larger audience, I'd be happy to contribute my services in some way, shape or form.

You've shared the more significant details here. So breaking it down further and expanding on what you've already got to turn it into a book shouldn't be too challenging of a task. It's just a matter of establishing the framework, asking relevant, probing questions, and then shaping your answers into sentences.

I have a good friend who's been on and off the streets for a while now. Something happened and **** hit the fan and his life suddenly became really ****ed up a couple of years ago. It's funny how all of lifes **** seems to happen to a select few. I've always helped him as much as possible but I'm also in a situation now where I can't help people until I get myself onto my own two feet. I've often thought about getting him into internet marketing so he can make a living. or getting him to write articles for me and then splitting the profits. I just need to make sure I know what I'm doing first before I get him to puta ll of his hopes and time into that might end up making him even more disheartened. Trying to inspire him and make him realise that he can make things happen for himself now. I'm planning on hitting it hard in january when I get the chance and then from there on provided I have some success I will bring him in and take him under my wing.

Thanks for such a great story I show this to him next time he's round at my yard

                Thanks for the reality check.

As you can see, you've moved many many people, including a bunch who haven't even posted, I'm sure. I love the idea of a book for charity, btw, and I'll offer some of my services on such a project as well (editing, proofing).

You know what Richard I know you don't want praise but really I think people like to feel they need to give it. It's inspirational what you've written, incredibly brave and honest.

Before the economic melt down I had a nice life in London and one day I was heading out to a friend's party and got chatting to this homeless chap in on the main train stations. Man I'll talk to just about anyone. He was saying that it was all very well having a bed for the night but what would really help would be having a bed until he got a job - he was frustrated with himself because he had skills but couldn't get a job with no fixed abode.

Anyway we had a cuppa and I bought him some food and gave him enough for a few nights in a hostel. I couldn't give any more nor could I offer him a place to stay...this upset me that I couldn't do more.

I wonder do you ever get the feeling you just want to take people home and help them? I do all the time.

Anyway I had an idea - I think if you had time to work with someone on a book you could in fact offer it for sale with the proceeds going to a few homeless charities world wide. I'm pretty sure the Big Issue would be very interested in your story if you want to share it more. It's your choice but words can be powerful things and if you can inspire one person that there is life beyond the streets then its worth it.

Just a suggestion if no one else has mentioned it.

      Thanks for sharing

Let me tell you it was "angelic"

I had a friend who got me out of deep depression.

I recommend you get a book written on your real life story and who knows hollywood could come calling at your door. You could do some rightful charity work through selling your real life story in books, magazines and a movie.

    You're really blessed by god.

Your Angel friend is even MORE blessed.

    Richard,

I don't really visit this part of the forum much, so must've overlooked this thread. I just read a comment elsewhere here which spurred on my curiosity, and dug through your posts until I found it.

"Wow", is all I can say; sounds like you really went through hell.

It's all too easy to make assumptions about the decisions some homeless people must've taken to end up where they are (drugs, drink, whatever), but this highlights that often these are effects of the homelessness and/or some profoundly traumatic/debilitating experience from which homelessness resulted - not the cause or trigger of everything.

This sort of thing really can, does and will happen to anyone. If times get rough enough, and the world gets you down, all it takes is a moment of confusion and misdirection to trigger off what could end up being months, years or even a lifetime of adversity and deprivation.

But you had the inclination to better yourself, and that is - unfortunately - what so many others lack (understandably so, in many cases, after all they've been through). Of course, you were also lucky enough to have a friend willing (and in a position) to give you a helping hand.

It just goes to show that no matter how bad things get, for no matter how long, lives can be changed around and rebuilt, with work. Life aint over 'til you're stone dead, and between now and that day, you have it within yourself - and owe it to yourself - to change your direction for the better.

But one needs to try to hold onto whatever hope and optimism one can in the face of all that is bad and traumatic, as without that, the inclination to put in the effort wouldn't follow, and one's chances of recovering are severely hampered.

    It all starts "up here".

    As they say: respect!

This story really highlighted to me how important it is to help our friends and fellow humans out of tight spots. I honestly believe we could make a huge difference if we actually took time to notice the plight of other people. Especially in London. I know from experience you spend a day in London and everyone is just another face by the end of it. People look at you funny if you smile at them on the tube.

I've been trying to give to charity more regularly with the idea that if everyone gave 30GBP/month to charity, it would work out to about 600,000,000 GBP/month in the UK alone.

No matter what you experience or go through, you still have the power and ability to control your reaction to your circumstances, and this is where all the magic happens - if you consistently react the right/positive way to them.

Very inspiring and beautiful story, thank you for posting it.
The key element in it, though, I think is that you already had been successful. You had that mental image and energy in you, you knew what attitudes, thoughts and feelings were required in success. Someone always been down there, receiving a low end salary at best, having all his friends there as well, and what is most important of all, having no good self-esteem and belief that he actually can accomplish something, wouldn't climb out of a pit like this. This is the reason why that jerk questioned the truthfulness of the story and demanded proof. The only way such a person may succeed is with supernatural powers, that is, with God's help.

      Hi Rich,

Your story is truly inspiring, and this was not something I knew about you. It also puts quite a few things into perspective - I have recently read read a number of threads discussing certain "entitlement" posts/threads that are scattered around the forum.

If anyone believes they are entitled to anything, or believes that the world owes them something, Richard's compelling story teaches us about basic human kindness, a willingness to work hard, and also that there is always someone in a worse-off position than yourself!

      Thanks again Rich.

I'd been homeless for a month when I was lynched by a large gang of homeless guys. They literally beat me until I just couldn't move. My eyes were swollen shut. I thought they'd stopped when I felt someone lift my top up. All I remember was this awful stinging sensation down my chest. I heard them going and managed to crawl away. My chest was wet but I didn't want to touch it as I thought they'd chucked acid on me. As I came out of the park and into the street light I realised it wasn't acid. With a knife, glass or some other sharp tool they cut my chest from the left side of my chest to below my belly button. I was dripping blood everywhere. It's amazing how many people walk past a man that's clearly just been beaten almost to death but luckily there was an angel. One lady came up and called me an ambulance.

Hospital was a nice time for me, nice regular food, comfy bed and cups of tea but you can't stay forever and I went back to where I was. This time I kept my head really low.

After another month I was walking to find a good begging spot when someone shouted my name. I looked round and to my horror it was a good friend of mine "Rich, what the f*** are you doing? Where have you been? You're coming with me mate!"

With a bit of force he frogmarched me back to his house and in no uncertain terms "ordered" me to stay until I was back on my feet. I got in his shower and it hit me that where I had been was my rock bottom and that moment was life turning a corner. In a week I got myself a crap job cleaning offices but it was money, I also found a room to rent. It was during my stay at my friends that I found an article on Internet Marketing. It intrigued me and like a lot of people I was sucked in by the promises of gazillions, fast cars and palm tree's. With my wages I bought quite a lot of crap but I did save up for my own laptop. After 2 years I was still in my room and still doing the job-However I was also a lot more knowledgeable about the IM world. The problem was I wasn't taking action. I was learning but not doing what I was learning. So after 2 years I finally took the plunge.

In that third year I made about £6000, which to me at the time was a major achievement but I'd made a lot of mistakes that had cost me, but they had taught me many valuable lessons.

In year four I made enough to leave my job and rent a one bed flat. I was now full time with this. Over the last three years I can't believe what's happened. I'm not going to sit here and boast, that's a waste of your time. What's strange is thinking that in just 7 years you can change your life beyond all recognition. I have tonnes of money making sites and I've just acquired a big envelope company with a mailing list of 8000 buyers and all the stock.

Next year I'm moving to Australia. If there's one lesson I'd like to pass on it's got to be this...

No matter what happens in life you are still in control. Every moment you take action you are setting about the motions of change. Every second that goes by when you are taking action brings you closer to your dream.

I like the scar down my chest now. It's a great reminder for me, not just how low you can go but what you can achieve.
    Great story. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank for sharing.

I pass by a couple regular homeless on my ways out to the various cafe's where I have the bipolar experience of being able to eat amazing food (if always at a budget of $12/day) and have a hard time even tasting it from all the stress I'm chewing on, trying to get any project working. The cafefree banter of those that go to the cafe for fun, feels like 2 feet and 2 universes away.

When the homeless people ask for money (various charades and routines) and I have to laugh and wince simultaneously how it is on some level I should be the one asking them for money as on paper I'm worth orders of magnitude less, largely by events not of my choosing and things I could have protected against. More amusing, is most of them net more money than I do on a day basis, despite me working my ass off.

I have absolutely no doubt that 1 year, let alone 4 is a completely new world. The problem is the next couple months where I'm poised right at the brink of success and collapse.

Usually I don't take any initiative to read personal stories, but today is an exceptional day. I read the story from start to bottom and feel life is really stranger than what we expect. After reading this story I can conclude that Internet is a life line for so many people who lost something in their past. Anyway, this story is really motivational than those spam emails of freaky little stories that I am receiving from our staff everyday.

Helluva story, Richard. I'm impressed by the way you turned your life around. You've proven people can start over and turn their life to account at any time. I salute you.

PS - I think besides the "angel in the park" your friend that took you in was also an "earthly" angel.

Really encouraging and useful. Life is not like a flower bad. Life is a complex combination of success and failure. We should not stop walking being failure. If we can continue walking with the lesson from failure, then the success will come surely. Many many thanks for sharing your experience.

I am almost homeless now. I rent a house until this October, and I don't have money to extend it, because i am out of everything. I am broke now. I can eat only for today, tomorrow I have to think of something to eat. I lost my daily job, everything that I do in internet marketing has no result till now. Every ebook I read makes me more confuse. Every website promise to gives bunch of money asking me to pay first to register. I can manage to save and purchase a domain with a free hosting, but it has no result till now. I can use internet daily from the money I have that day. I am stuck and don't know where to start. Need your guidance very much. Could you please so kind to guide me? I hope you read my post. Thanks.

I've not commented here for want of not trying to bump the thread.

I want to say how grateful I am at how many people have understood what I was saying and have taken guidance from it. So for everyone that's commented, thank you.

There is a big lesson here for those that want to see it.

iminaction. I can't help you, you must help yourself. Life can be incredibly difficult but you must see where you can change that. The way I see it now, is that I made that life difficult for me, not someone else. It was my doing. No doubt you're there too.

I was lucky to have a friend. PM me and I'll do what I can.

Too all those who have so kindly commented, I've tried to stay away but this thread has grown. It was hard for me to say what I said, I very much appreciate the decent sentiments.

You're all good people and I thank you.

As an update, I'm doing very well, I'm very happy, I really appreciate the time this threads got. If it helps just one person then it's "Job done".

Take it for what it is and what it was intended to be.

Richard, thank you so much for sharing your story. It truly is inspiring to see a person go from having everything to having nothing, then getting it all back through sheer determination and the help of a good friend.

I can honestly say that I know what it feels like to hit rock bottom. I've been there. Not in terms of of worldly possessions, but emotionally.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping other people, and for having the courage to tell us your story.

In life, no one knows whats around the corner. As this story tells.

However, its what you do with the small things that helps you change.

All you saw was an article. And that article changed your life, with a helping hand of your friend.

You know, i was really down before reading your inspiring story.

You have helped me find my fighting spirit. Which left me years ago.

    Thank you so much.

What a WONDERFUL friend to fish you off the streets and order you into their house to stay there. That was really a RESCUE! May not have felt good that day at that moment, but you were really ordered to march forward, and you followed that order to good reason. Good for you, I am PROUD OF YOU!

Thank you so much. Healing our wounds of our past is a sacred process. It's a holy event, a moment when we decide to step out of our dreams, the smallness of you individual selves, and see the sacredness of our existence. By gaining wisdom from our emotional wounds, we break free from our past and we are able to grasp something truly amazing-our divine purpose in this life. In the Valeo Method I call that the "dream of your soul." It is a part of you that never dies. It came pre-DNA and it longs to be fulfilled and reunite with our creator one day and hear those most powerful words, "job well done." No amount of money fame or achievement will sooth and nurture an aching wounded soul more than finding and living the dream of the soul. I hope you have an awesome and amazing weekend. God bless you and be very encouraged! It is awesome for you to share it takes great courage. I appreciate you.

Thanks for sharing the story Richard.

When I was in high school there was one teacher that everyone thought was cool and liked the most. He was the funniest guy and only teacher to have every student pay full attention in every class. He was full of energy, everyone just loved him. I was shocked to find out he used to be homeless.

Your story reminded me of him. Every time we walk by a homeless we always figure that they are destined to be on the streets forever, but your help me think that positive things can still happen and each of them can turn their life around.
