Starting the Day with a Choice

One of the main differences that I've noticed between happy people and negative people is not in the number of bad circumstances they have but in the choices that they make. Circumstances do not define us; our attitudes define us. When a negative circumstance occurs, I can either feel badly about it, or I can figure out how to change it. It's a choice, and in some situations, it is the only true control we have.

Each morning, we have a choice -- Good day or bad day. It's not what's going to happen that day that will make it good or bad, but how we react to those circumstances. I am learning that this is not always easy to remember, but, boy, does it make a difference!

What choice did you make today?

    AWESOME POINT Kristie

Happiness and and emotions ultimately come from the inside...not from external factors. They are a choice. Of course there are things like chemicals (foods, drugs, etc), circumstances, events, and other external factors that can influence our emotions, but the emotion is ultimately within our control (unless we have a disorder).

Waking up with a smile and telling yourself in the mirror "todays going to be a good day" takes three seconds (I counted) and can help change our perspective of that day...and every day.

    I'm having a good day

    Are you?

Great post. I strongly agree with you, as I stopped choosing for things to be unhappy a few years ago and became so much happier as a result. I'm not perfect, but I know it works.

Today is definitely going to be a good day

      Very cool Ruth.

The interesting thing is how many choices we actually make in a day. Does anybody else ever think about that or is it just me? We make hundreds, thousands, perhaps more individual choices each and every day. Those choices directly affect how we feel, how we look, what we do, where we go, when we go.

Each of those choices is within our control so we essentially have soo much control over how we feel. The choices we consciously and subconsciously make directly determine how happy we are that moment, that hour, that day.

      Crazy to think about.

Or maybe I'm just crazy for thinking about it

You're not crazy for thinking about it - but I think a lot of people don't even think about it. They don't realise the power of choice. And like I said, I am not perfect either and still make "bad" choices. Sometimes I even knowingly choose to be miserable! We are only human But at least realising that we've got the choice is a big part of it.

a book said that we have sometime to think how we will react to different circumstances and that will determine the the result of the circumstances to us.

@kenster ... sometimes because we have repeated so many times we are not even thinking when we make the choices

And somebody these choices might be really harmful to the person you want to be

we take control by watching what we do ... taking a time log for a week and asking looking at the consequences of continuing in the action for the next 10 years

If the consequences are not great , will not get you to where you want to go then it is important that you change your choices

    Hi Kristie
It is surprising what happens when you wake up and even before you get out of bed, you say to yourself, "Today is the best day of my life so far", never say "going to be" or "will be" because that is not in the present. Any affirmation has to be in the present to be effective, and you know what, it will be the best day of your life....

Awesome post. Here is my problem. I often choose to have a great day and guess what happens? Someone trys to ruin it by talking about how bad their day is. So, I have tried to steer clear of the negative people I work around as best as I can. Sometimes it's just hard work having a great day!

True. Not all people look at things in quite the same way. And there are some people we just can't avoid, but like you, we must work around it! Our happiness is a decision we make.

Now turn that into a positive affirmation by saying something like, "today is easily the best day of my life and the people around me make it even better". See if that changes anything

Ryan - you made your day greater than it could have been if you hadn't been motivated to make it so. You are right, we all get negative stuff thrown at us all the time. But we can choose to duck or to just go around the roadblocks. It's not a matter of looking at how the roadblocks were there, but rather congratulations that you got around/or ducked!

I learned this when in a group where a woman was frantically bemoaning her childhood and a sexual overture from a relative that she fought off when she was 14. The facilitator helped her look at it differently by congratulating her over and over again for having the courage as a young teen to successfully fight the predator off. It made a huge difference for her, and for those of us listening. It's about making the choice to see things differently.

Yes, you're right, we allow things and people to affect us. Yes it's hard for us not to let it happen, but that skill is acquired over a lifetime. I don't let people or things bother me, but there are certain days where I forget what I'm supposed to do when things or people get to me. And I allow my emotions to get the better of me, and I realize after my emotional tirade... this was all a choice. And I chose the easy way out, to be affected, instead of fight the natural reaction.

Exactly what I was going to say. I am dealing with a health issue that makes itself known every morning, in fact it's usually what wakes me up.

It's still a choice to not let it bother me, and there are millions who make the choice to be happy with much less and much more pain than I have. Still, I gotta admit I'm a little jealous of some others (which I'm trying to release). It's easy to choose a good day when everything is going well for you. Have to start affirming that everything is going well for me, lol.

Optimism is usually a skill of emotional intelligence, which translates to a more rewarding career and greater success in life. Every day life is short to become miserable, so start turning your thinking around! Positive thoughts, a good outlook, and overall happiness can advance your prospects for work, relationships and other life experiences.

Sometimes it's not about an entire day. If the best you can convince yourself to do is a moment then take it. Start connecting all those little momets you allowed yourself to be OK and a funny things happens. You soon have entire days within your grasp.

I completely agree with this, it is all about the choices you make and often times the problem people have is they never think even a step ahead of that choice. Most people wake up happy or sad based on previous choices...which does not factor into the thinking ahead, they just react and either are happy or sad. If you actually take a little time and think through each of your choices, then you have a better comfort zone with your feelings, and ultimately will be happy because you accept it.

      Excellent point.
Negative people just tend to be lazy and have poor self image. Even worse, they vent their lack of success of loved ones. Perhaps they hung around negative people too long themselves?

So as a side note, beware of what you associate with.

Great thread. It's all about personal responsibility too. Every choice we make is our responsibility. Sometimes we need help (i.e. medication or authorities) but as a general rule every moment is a choice. It's especially true when it comes to our attitude. We can choose to change at any time. Many times I get overwhelmed when I am trying to absorb all of this IM stuff, and I can get to the point where I think I can't do it, but I make the choice to shift outta there.

I am in my 60's, starting a new venture. I got my doctorate in my 50's. I am of the opinion it is not only never too late, but always a good choice to jump into new ventures!

I'm a huge believer in making the choice to have a great day. Too many friends hate their jobs, struggle with decisions they make, consistently sit in a slump.

It's a good day! I'm breathing, able to talk to friends and family, the sun is out, and I'm sitting here typing, because I choose to and it's what I like to do.

I agree that we all face some sort of bad circumstance through out the day and our lives. There is no way to avoid bad circumstances and the negative people are the ones that just make it worse.

If you have a positive attitude for anything you do, you can achieve, conquer, and over-come any challenges you might face.
