Is this IM business getting you down?

Fellow Warriors

I haven't posted very much here over the years, but I 'lurk' a lot and buy a few WSO's here and there. I read what others are doing and appreciate the product reviews and advice so many are willing to share. Thank you to those of you who do contribute so much.

The purpose of this post is to share with you what I find are the problems I face with doing IM stuff, and to hopefully encourage others who may feel the same way, that you are not alone.

I have been doing IM for over 4 years now and with limited success. I would really love to be financially independent and not worked to a frazzle doing it. With limited funds and living alone, my main obstacles seems to be:

Doing it alone (no-one to discuss ideas with)
Too many options to explore (tactics, strategies & tools)
Too many courses that interest me (fragmented direction)
Too many people trying to sell me junk (wasting my time and money)
Losing motivation when I don't seem to be getting anywhere

The things that are working against me are:

Fear of making a fool of myself online
Lack of confidence in my abilities
Too easily distracted by the next best thing
Trying to make it all perfect before I put anything online

Things I've started to do but never finished and/or stayed with:

Writing a book
Membership sites
Drop Shipping
Affiliate Marketing
Adsense
PPC
Domain Flipping
Article Marketing
and just about everything in between

I am not bad at any of these, however, the amount of work involved has discouraged continuation of most of them. My head is full of possibilities and plans that could all work, but after all this time online, I am starting to feel that unless I start to connect with other people doing this too, I am not going to achieve much all by myself.

We all need to connect with like minded people with similar goals who are willing to discuss, support and show interest in what we as individuals are doing online. This involves a pretty high level of trust in each other, and with so many questionable products and motives on the internet, it tends to be a bit scary to open up to people in case you get 'ripped off'.

My hard drive is over a terabyte of IM products, software and 'stuff' associated with all my sites. I have multiple domains, memberships and subscriptions resulting in hundreds of sites, services and information. I am a gold mine of information, know about just about every tactic there is (white, grey and black hat) and know a lot about optimizing sites. I have position one in the serps for over 2 years now for a couple of keywords, but haven't bothered to really monetize these properly. They are small obscure niches and I am getting about 6,000 visitors to each them a month. The challenge for me was just to see it happen and keep it long term. Yeah I know, pretty dumb.

I guess you could call me an IM 'nerd'. I like to try things out just to see if I can do it. And I can, but I haven't capitalized on any of my knowledge to make serious money. I sit at my computer for many hours, watching other people have great success, produce amazing products and courses, and all of it intrigues me. So I go out and do the course, try the method and see it start to work. Then I run away!!

Why? I guess it's because I am AFRAID of being successful - of being in the public eye in case I mess up. When it all boils down, working alone from home has some massive dis-advantages if you are trying to be an entrepreneur online. I even started list building, but that scared me too! You need to build a relationship with your list, and that means sticking with something for more than a couple of months.

I know I am not alone in this. I read of others who are struggling to 'make it' and who have been brave enough to say something in public. The common theme seems to be lack of help, encouragement and someone to 'share' the journey with.

So I guess you are wondering what I am leading up to here?? Well, I had an idea that might work! Although the Warrior Forum is a great forum to belong to, it's easy to get lost here. So many people, so many ideas. I find it a wonderful resource, but feel it's too big with too many diverse people and motives for me to feel I 'belong'.

What I thought would be good for me and perhaps others like me, would be a small community of people who are prepared to actively participate on a regular basis. I'd want it to be free to join, and to focus purely on a place to stay in close touch with others who are struggling to achieve their goals.

I have a huge amount of 'stuff and knowledge' that I'd be willing to share with an active and committed group. There would be others who would contribute as well, and we would all be able to find someone to talk ideas over with in a non-threatening and supportive environment.

Maybe even find partners to work on projects with. A place to share the load, the ideas and difficulties with someone. A 'personal' touch. A limited membership so it doesn't get too crowded and impersonal.

Anyone else interested? Would you like something like this to help you in your IM journey? Somewhere where you don't feel you need to prove anything. Somewhere you can let your frustrations be known and have a sympathetic non-judgmental ear and get some help to move forward?

I realize that this is fraught with risk as there are always people who would try to take advantage of a place like that. But honestly, if we don't take some risks, we tend to miss out on what could have been. I am willing to set up something to meet this need, IF there is any interest.

A free community for a small group of IM'ers who feel disconnected and are struggling to find the support and motivation they need on a deeper level? The main goal of joining would be to find like-minded and supportive people to 'connect' with and learn from.

If you think this would be something that you could participate in - freely - and be committed to participating at least 3-4 times a week, then please PM me, and/or leave a reply below. I won't post a poll as I feel that's not personal enough. I'd really prefer your thoughts on this. If I get enough positive responses, then I am prepared to put in the work and resources to make it happen - with some help, of course, from anyone else who is keen and has the time. (Please, only genuinely interested people need respond.)

Be Well

Sent PM. I guess half the battle is confidence, someone can be really clued up and knowledgable but without self belief its difficult to make it work. As well as working on IM projects perhaps it may be an idea to work on psychology / self esteem to turn around though patterns.

Your issues are common. Members of my mentoring site join and almost universially have the same problems as the ones you outline.

The isolation of online work can create a creativity vaccuum where you are always casting around for a "quick win". This is why some people buy WSO after WSO and never actually use them.

What I do is tear things down to the bare roots and find out what they *really* want to do, and then build a plan from there. This means setting lifestyle goals sometimes as well. This is one of my favourite quotes:

“If you don't know where you are
going, any road will get you there.”

The other part of the problem is people are not aware of, or do not take notice of things like attitude etc in success. Reading this forum, its all about systems, all about methods. There is little emphasis on the passion and drive required to run those systems successfully.

Most people choose to fail without ever realising it, simply because they think that the mindset stuff gets in the way of making money. It is actually the complete opposite.

To answer your original question.. a resounding YES !
Ugh it gets so frustrating when I'm anxious to put my plan into action but then the obstacles you spoke of rears it's ugly head. I have the same things working against me and I think if we could get together with like minded people (without the fear of newbie bashers in forums making people feel small). Whatever happened to "there is no such thing as a stupid question?"

The hardest thing for me is to stay focused on one thing at a time. It's especially hard when you work from home and have no one to bounce ideas off of and to keep you motivated. That's one thing I really miss about working for a company.

I like your idea. It is true that it does include some risk, but it also will be challenging to coordinate when we are spread all over the globe in different time zones.

I've been doing this about the same length of time you have. I'm making money, but I tend to be scattered between too many projects and the potential of too many ideas.

I'd be interested in joining your community.

I am encouraged to see a few people who are interested in hooking up. I think having people in the same boat as you really can help as we all have a different way of handling things and can help one another along the way.

The biggest thing I have found with these types of groups is being consistent with participation. If you can commit to something like this, then I believe it's the first step towards learning to focus albeit with encouragement from your peers.

Going it alone can be depressing in the beginning if you don't have support, so hopefully we will see a few more interested people and then we can get some ideas together about how to manage it.

Really looking forward to meeting you all.. Thanks

      Cheers,
      Sharon

Hell, everyone deals with the "inner demons" from time to time.

Nearly a year into seriously trying to ply my knowledge, and i got notification that my first check from Google ($106) and from an affiliate program were on the way.

It was vindication. I'M NOT INSANE

Now I'm on the cusp of being the Webmaster/Head Geek for 3 different projects which are NOT my own websites. Word of mouth can get you more business and income than any oDesk or internet campaign.

Which brings me to the OP and the interconnectivity of those struggling...

This group has people upset about failing.

This business is A/B Split Testing: Life Edition

This business IS failure. You will fail at most of the things you try. You will then find, through your personal "split-testing" something that works for you, tweak it, scale it, and THEN you'll have the success.

Sometimes it's just so hard to get that one bit of success...

      Hey Michael,

Thanks for your input. I don't agree that it's about being upset with failure tho. For me it's more about connecting on a more personal level with people feeling a tad isolated and a little tentative about all this IM 'stuff'.

I guess it really depends on who you have around to talk things over with. I live alone, and work hard at what I do. Staying focused is always a challenge.

It's not always about being successful in business. Being connected with like minded people can make a huge difference and open up opportunities to work with others which in and of itself is motivating.

I am not so much into making money (although that is important) as I am into connecting with real people doing what I am doing too and being able to share knowledge and skills. Sort of a mastermind group but with a more personal interest in each other's journey. A place to develop friendships as well.

      Cheers

Sounds like you have overwhelmed yourself over the years and are just bouncing around from method to method. I would look at what you like to do and stick with that method for awhile. Also it sounds like you have subscribed to a lot of lists over the years. Maybe think about unsubscribing from some of them. This will help with getting side tracked with the "next best thing" in IM. This is a tough on, limit yourself to checking your email. If you are always checking your email and reading every new IM email, it can take up a lot of your time. I have been trying this and I seem to get more done. Good luck.

I was just having this same discussion with a fellow marketer. We were both wondering why we aren't building backlinks when we know it would boost our sites, and create traffic.

We both have a lot of knowledge, but when you are working at home, you don't have a boss looking over your shoulder, you don't have the fear of losing your job if you surf the net, you don't have deadlines to meet, or anyone else to answer to.

When you are in school you have deadlines, you have to turn in assignments, you have to register and do all the stuff that requires meeting a certain timeframe. Same thing with a J.O.B. Some people thrive in a social setting even though we complain about the hours and the grumpy people and the over bearing bosses, it keeps you going unfortunately.

I think what the OP is talking about is like a master mind group that will help to keep everyone on track with personal goals as well as business goals. Jack Canfield has a great setup for master mind groups, like an outline. Success Principles

My schedule is so hectic with my kids, it's hard for me to commit to a certain time...but it would be a great idea.

Good to see some comments here.

Looks like the main problem emerging is 'focus'. So what steals our focus? Is it perhaps a lack of faith in ourselves? Perhaps the direction/method/strategy we are trying isn't the best one? Maybe there's something better we should be doing?

I think so. What do you think causes you to lose focus, get distracted or change direction over and over?

Would be good to think about it and perhaps post your thoughts here.

      Cheers,
      Sharon

      On this issue of focus...

When I started investigating IM about two years ago, I was overwhelmed with all the info. So here's what I did...

I listed all the stuff I thought (at the time) was essential to getting online with a website and starting a business of some sort.

I ordered the list in the way that made the most common sense to me at the time. (Pick a domain name, buy a domain name, get hosting, create a simple page, learn how to use an FTP to upload the page, etc.)

Then I just focused on item one, giving myself a reasonable time for its completion. (I allowed a full week for choosing and buying a domain name and getting hosting. All that ended up taking me about 90 minutes, including breaks for coffee.)

The trick for me was just FORCING myself to focus on each step at a time...and not moving on to (or worrying about) any other steps until I reached them.

Funny thing, I'm better able to focus on work when I'm at Starbucks with my laptop than when I'm at home. MORE distractions, sure, but a different sort of distractions. There's a big difference between ringing phones and a whiney dog at home and the sounds of music and barista chatter at a coffee house. I can easily ignore the latter stuff!
