[Reality Check] You Got What It Takes to be RICH??

I just ran across a pretty interesting article in Forbes Magazine. At first, it ticked me off a bit; as it seemed to exclude those in my demographic...

But, then I got motivated to prove statistics wrong...

What about you?

I once spent a week down in Costa Rica with Calvin Ayres. It was the same week that he was on the cover of Forbes' billionaire issue. After spending a week with him, I realized that it is possible for anybody to be a billionaire! He is certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Long story short ... yes I do.

I am already making a GOOD living with my own fulltime online business (what I call a Mercedes lifestyle).

The goal is too look after my wife and kids period!

I dont need anyones permission to succeed ... neither does anyone on this forum. Just put in the work, be smart and you'll do it.

But it's the truth. I mean, sure statistically speaking you increase your chances DRAMATICALLY by action, but in the end there is no guarantee that you will be billionaire or even a millionaire. It takes more than a lot of effort to reach THAT level.

Also, regarding being born in September, I think there is a reason for this. All the top athletes where also born in September and early months. Why? Because when the team trainers come to seek out potential candidates, they look for the fastest, strongest and most skillful in the specific age group. If you are born in September you will be in the same age group that a person born in the June of the same year, but you will have 6 months advantage, so you will be chosen instead of him. Then you will be exposed to better training which will even further boost your sports.

He is just as skillful, only unlucky. Maybe it is similar for business.

The only thing where luck might play a part is being lucky enough to be born with the right mindset.

True entrepreneurs make the most of luck when it's there. When it's not there it doesn't stop them. They are getting there with or without luck.
Everyone else lets luck pass them by, either not making the most of it, or not even realising it was there in the first place.

The only thing you really need is the right mindset and staminer to see it through. If you are born with that then you are lucky, if you aren't born with it - nothing stops us changing our ways.

Of course there is always bad luck but anyone is subject to that.

Luck is when you are born with the name Walton, or your parents sent you to Harvard, or you got a way cutting classes and play with machines later to be known as PCs, or your company got bought by the giants for a billion bucks, or your previous company that fired you, rehired you after Pixar.

You can't force yourself to be a Walton or have parents who will send you to Harvard or get funded by the NIH to work with Craig Venter. There are luck involved.

You can't create luck directly, but you can influence future events to produce more luck for you. For example, if you're 14 year old and reading this, you can choose to forget you ever heard of Adsense and Wordpress, turn off your computer, study like a maniac, get into Harvard and then to Wharton, get a part time job at Goldman Sachs, start business ventures in China, Russia, Brazil, India, know 1,000 investors, angels, venture capitalists around the world, I highly doubt in the future this person would be here in this forum asking how to make $4-5 writing articles and wso-ing.

From my own research of becoming a Billionaire, (excluding marrying billionaires, mindset, inheritance) you will need

-a background that helps you achieve such goal, this include, parents, university, and other privileges (the facebook, google, yahoo, microsoft guys share these privileges)

-time, a lot of time, not just in building the wealth for yourself but your previous generation spent a lot of time on that endeavor.

-hard work, lots and lots of hard work

-the right industry, (finance, big business) and its not just enough to be in the right industry, you have to be on TOP of that industry, or even build that very industry. (tech)

-luck, both from your previous life (parents, family got 'lucky' breaks) luck in your childhood, luck in your career and then all the luck you made possible while you're en route to building billions

    -build business, go public

There are only a few billionaires and almost all of them got there not by desire, plan, or goal of becoming a billionaire. They got there because they came from a very privileged background, or a previous generation prepared them for it, or they just found themselves there after their business got a lot of value in the world market. Its not likely that anyone here would be billionaire. Perhaps a deca-millionaire or centi-millionaire would be a more appropriate and reachable goal.

There's a book I read from a billionaire, forgot the title, he said that if he could do it all over again, he'd stop at 60 million. The 'rich' lifestyle is the same as billionaire minus the headache, time commitment and responsibilities.

Personally, if the devil offer me a deal to make me a billionaire but give up one of my nuts, I'd say, take off both of them. I don't even need them. I'd throw in the penis just for bonus.

OK, although I appreciate your contribution to the thread... your generalizations and (to me) defeatist viewpoints kinda make my skin crawl.

I'm not going to argue with you; as you have every right to your opinions as the next person; BUT, I will present facts that are in direct contrast to your above statements...

      Firstly, another article from Forbes...
      The World's Richest Dropouts - Forbes.com

Secondly; from the above article, Larry Ellison (net worth $25bil in 2008) stands out...

Certainly not a part of the demographic you stated are the only ones who are capable of acquiring billionaire status.

Although I can't agree that you can be born with it, I think L Wilson makes a very valid point regarding mind set..... Think & Grow Rich, IMHO.

      Anyway... thanks for your insights.

Dropping out of an Ivy is nothing but the perfect outlier. The fact that one is at an Ivy League in the first place suggest a privileged background. Everything else that follows is nothing short of first class opportunities.

Larry Ellison was born in Manhattan, New York. Home of the most number of billionaires. What better privileged place to be born at other than New York City? Actually, even better, born in the 1940s, putting him at an age perfect (along with Gates, Jobs, Allen, Balmer) for an industry that would produce many Titans.

Yup, but he made the list.

And had a business that was worth a billion dollars.

None of the guys we are talking about actually "have" billions. it's all in assets of some sort.

Until you cash it out it's all on paper... and then tuned into currency... er... paper. haha!

The point is that my research shows the common characteristics of Billionaires from involvement in real estate investments, oil, energy, and if all else fails, millions of dollars of loans from banking institution. Want to be on a list? Get into real estate, oil, energy, or borrow hundreds of millions of dollars. His story proves (not disproves) my research. In his book, he couldn't mention one person who followed his teachings and became a billionaire. Not one. Its not what he says, its what he did.

Dan Pena and Felix Dennis on the other hand could name names of people that got rich using the things they teach, albeit in the almost Billion status.
