Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life? Is it?

I have a very good friend who is a 6th Dan in Aikido. We were chatting about this phrase, and how people always seem to use it when they're planning on making some significant changes in their lives.

He feels it should be turned around to "Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life". It makes you think a whole lot more.

How would you spend today if it really was the last day of the rest of your life? What would you do to make it special and memorable? What would you do to make it meaningful for you and those around you?

Think about it. Then, go and do it.

Thought about it. Think I prefer the original version of the phrase. No contest!

I prefer the first version too!

I suppose I would be with my heart, my breathe, and really enjoy the day! Tell my loved ones I loved them, appreciate all that I have and all that I have been given in my life!

well I guess the second version makes you think more, but it could also have different interpretations, and I guess the authors would not want to have multiple interpretations of their words. But coming from your martial arts friend, I am not surprised he prefered the second version.

The second version will have a negative impact on your mindset. Where as the first version is positive 100%.

I'm fairly confident that nobody would prefer this to be the last day of your life. That's not the point. The point is, if this indeed was the last day of your life, would you watch television or would you play with your kids? Would you sleep til midday or would you get up early to enjoy the sunrise?

Disagree. The second version makes you work out exactly how you want to spend your time. Once this day is over, we don't get it again, so we need to make the absolute most of every day.

I'd probably be focused on trying to find some way of making it NOT be the last day of my life!

But it's really rather impossible to imagine how one might react to that scenario because it's essentially an impossbile scenario. Even those suffering with a terminal illness don't know exactly the day they will pass.

The only exceptions would be someone on death row for whom today is the day, or some unfortunate soul who's decided to punch his or her own ticket. And I don't think either of those scenarios is relevant to this thought exercise.

Whereas it's an indisputable fact that today is the first day of the rest of your life. It's what you do with that fact that counts.

But perhaps I'm still missing the point.

First day first day first day. As a famous joke in India quotes a minister declaring, after a rather uncomfortable journey in the last compartment of a railway train, that: "from today, no train will be allowed to have a last compartment - and just if there happens to be one then it simply must be fitted somewhere in the middle of the train".

Lives can not have last days. Every day is either first or something in the middle of life.

I agree, thinking that today is your last day is very helpful to do extra ordinary things. We can do the best everyday if we will think like that.

The answer is fairly simple, the journey a little more difficult, but it can be done by putting You First for a change. It is always good to consider other people and their feelings. Helping people is a great thing to do so go on doing that, the difference or change I am talking about is "Putting You First". To some people, because that may sound selfish, and in a way it could be seen that way, but if you are happy and content with "Your Life" you will be able to do much more good for your family, friends and fellow Human Beings. Think of all the good you could do if you were happy and content with your own life. Here's how to do it.

Life is very unpredictable. What you don't have now, you may acquire tomorrow. And what you may have now, may be gone by tomorrow. Learn to live with it.
