The Power of a Message in your Mind

Affirmations work right? Eh, kind of. This really depends how much emotional intensity you put into it, which, in brain science terms means how much you activate different parts of your neurology. If affirmations aren't working, consider activating your mind and body FIRST, and then going into a phrase. I'm a fan of incantations, where you use your voice, your body and your emotions. The reason this works so well is that the human brain encodes things more intensely when the person is in peak physiological states (breathing heavy, rapid neurological activity, emotional firing). Scientists call the memories that are encoded from this rapid internal activity, "flashbulb memories."

The phrase itself, "Everyday, massive abundance circulates through my mind and circulates through my body, and I manifest it daily," actually has other neurological associations to it. You may actually see images in your mind in the moment (whether you're conscious of it or not) associated to that language, which plays a major role in training your brain. I started my journey in the science of personal achievement some time ago and couldn't understand why I couldn't get myself to use some of the principles I had read in success books, until I learned about the brain, things like NLP, and became a disciplined hunter of mind body techniques that actually work. I believe that the foundation for taking your life anywhere you want it to be is being what I call "internally adept!" Thanks for reading everyone.

I totally agree with you!! After I went through hypnosis and was explained the science behind the procedure...I have been hooked on the power of the mind and suggestion. No matter what I want...to exercise more, the eat less, to write better...I focus and repeat the end result I want in my mind. It works!

The law of attraction is actually rephrased from some very, very old teaching that goes back over 5000 years to the Vedas. It was later viewed as a religion, but really teaches the secrets to the mind and thoughts.

I have experiences with the theory of attraction.Got familiar with it through a book and after that I did some experiments with it.The whole theory depends on creating views about our future expectations. We have to imagine about the feelings which we will get after we achieve our aim while we view them in our mind. You have to do this for sometime and you will experience what you have imagined has happened.

Great Comment! I definitely believe in like attracting like, I see it in my life everyday. What you're referring to, building realities in your mind first, is a very powerful thing. This is how human beings create things in the world. We see it in our minds, we build the reality everyday, and it becomes such a massive part of us that we have to go out there and make it real in the world! Thanks again for commenting.

Something about that affirmation, "Everyday, massive abundance circulates through my mind and circulates through my body, and I manifest it daily", reminded me of a Tony Robbins video I watched recently. He speaks a lot about mental states and how it helps you move towards your goals.

I'm just curious what are your thoughts on "Creative Visualization"? Not how it relates to the so-called "Law of attraction" or "The Secret" - but psychologically do you think it's as powerful or more powerful than relying solely on language?

I do think it's massively powerful! First, yes, I love TR! The language itself has a strong impact on the things that take place in your brain. The visualization part has more power than we know. I believe that human beings literally create their lives by the things they picture in their heads. If you can become adept in the area of building realities in your mind, it gives you a great idea of what things should look like in life. I sit down and engineer my future in my mind every day of my life. It trains you at a neurological level and associates the images to the thoughts of you achieving your outcomes. Your brain is fundamentally associative, meaning that it spends a lot of it's time linking things up. If you can consciously link up the images of your future, with compelling feelings to make it real, and powerful emotions, it's undoubtedly a great way to influence yourself to make it real in the world. I believe we were given the ability to create new things in our minds as a tool, or catalyst for excitement to turn it into something in the world. I spend so much time creating things that aren't real yet, because it is a powerful way to condition your mind. Visualizing is a great thing. It falls into what I call being a 'self directed human.' Our capacity to create what we want in our minds is extraordinary. To me, this is a major reason the Prefrontal Cortex of the brain was created (if evolution is what you believe). This separates us from animals, and any other living creature on the planet (that we know of)! Thanks for commenting, I encourage you to really dive into your mind and teach your brain how to design your future, or to continue practicing daily if you are already!

Lastly, ya know those restrictive programs that pop up once and a while and say things like "nah, it's not possible for you, you've never done anything like this before?" Well, when you picture yourself creating things in the world, you're literally untraining those negative mantras, and replacing them with the certainty coming from the images you're creating. I believe the foundation for really making life happen and living life on your terms is being brain conscious, and going in there and training things to work for you.

I’ve been into body building and marital arts most of my life and the key factor between both is seeing in your mind first what it is you want to do; to see it perfect and see yourself doing it is the most important of all factors.

If you just go through the motions and don’t use your mind to see it, to see YOU doing it, to see YOUR muscles growing bigger and stronger, to see yourself moving fast and fluent, then you will not see the great results that other achieve.

Part of the meditation phase after preform a form was to clear my mind and see myself preforming the form over again, perfect and fluent.

Part of my body building techniques was to close my eyes and see myself go through my workout watching myself do every exercise correctly with correct form and heavy weights.

Before I did either of these both my body building and martial arts were ok, but not great, only after seeing everything done in my mind did my result surge ahead in results.

      Thanks for the awesome responses!

@rcritchett Your excitement for this topic really comes through in your writing. I personally love the subject of mental training and find it absolutely fascinating. It amazes me that there is such a wealth of information on this topic, yet it is so often overlooked. I agree with you and believe that if people devoted just a small portion of their time to mental conditioning it could change their lives in dramatic fashion.

I haven't heard of the idea of incantations but it makes sense. I should probably give them a shot. My personal practice uses mostly visualization along with meditation; which I find to be a useful combo. From the reading that I've done, I understand that these practices can actually rewire the brain. Much in the same way incantations do. By tying certain ideas, language or images together the brain creates powerful associations.

I think meditation can help with concentration and getting into a state that's ready to accept new ideas. Getting around the old noise and programs can be tough sometimes.

@scortillion You really brought up some great points. It's funny that you mentioned body building and imagery, because that's something I did when I was growing up. For whatever reason I admired the physical prowess of body builders and I wanted to emulate them. Whenever I saw a "muscle dude" I was impressed at how much work must have went into the end result. Anyway, I think it was seeing the end result that made all of the work seem worthwhile.

By imagining the final perfect result (as you said) it makes it easier to get through all the difficult training. I think the same holds true for business, or any endeavor really.

Dude.. I love it! Meditation is super powerful and you're totally right on... it does rewire cortical processes in the brain. Awesome! You juiced me.. I'm gonna add more visualization in meditation sessions.
