Improving Your Personal Growth for a Better Living

Personal Development as it's sometimes referred to, starts when a person realize a certain aspect of them self (or their life) needs to be changed, added or improved upon. This realization indicates that a time of great personal growth is approaching as they contemplate taking action towards making this change. This state of awakening is also known as self-empowerment which is the underlying force that will guide them to achieving their goal. A way to a good life must consider the following aspects for a better living in improving your personal growth.

There are three tips that I consider the best when it comes to personal growth:

    1. Have high self confidence
    2. Be willing to give others
    3. Manage your time and resources wisely (be productive)

Bonus tip: have good communication skills (usually, confident people have them)

    Thanks

I believe that everyone has areas in their lives that need at least some improvement. This thought, of course, stems from the idea that no one's perfect. It's great when people notice this about themselves and take action that leads to personal development and fulfillment.

The sad thing, however, is that although it's rather easy to realize these shortcomings in ourselves, most of us are afflicted with negative beliefs that hinder us from getting any better. We don't even try: "I was born like this so that's probably how I'm supposed to be." Sure, there is professional help available somewhere out there but it costs money and you first need to spend time looking for it.

Now, I don't have any statistics on this, but I'm also pretty sure that a lot of people are skeptical when it comes to self-help books. "Come on. They're just books. How can a single book change my life?" It's true that books alone don't change lives, but a good book can challenge and thus change beliefs, which in turn can lead to life-changing decisions. That's the first and most important change of all.

In the recent years I've been thinking of a way to reach out to more people, and let them know that their lives are mostly limited by their own (negative) beliefs. What a huge difference it would make if open-mindedness toward self-development spread to the mainstream.

For example, how could we go from

"I'm shy and average-looking, so I'm never gonna have a smart and beautiful girlfriend,"

      to

"I'm gonna do whatever it takes to make myself irresistible to girls."

I think one way is to start with friends and family. Rather than be locked up in your own mind (which is fine too of course), you could share your own ideas and success stories with those people that are the most open-minded but seem to be struggling with certain things in life.

You'll notice that involving your friends also creates reciprocity as your buddies start getting in-tune with these ideas. They will be positively charged with life-changing energy, and they will reflect it back onto you as well. It's like creating your own mastermind club. And if your friends start spreading the same practices to their friends and so forth, it means that we're on the right track.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Now, if we are honest, some people are just no willing to change and would find any other excuses under the sun to avoid facing their fears, their issues or their shortcomings (not sure if it's the correct word). So excuses such as "self help books can't help me", even so there are thousands of positive testimonials that prove just the opposite, are pretty common.

Not always, but sometimes, the real reason behind this type of sentence is: a fear of growth because of a fear of change. Change is uncomfortable, sometimes scary and always unfamiliar. That might be enough to put a lot of people off..
I agree. You either have to be open-minded or gullible to benefit from self-help. And as you said, changes require you to step outside your comfort zone, which makes the pursuit even less desirable. But a good book always walks you through the steps and helps you to reprogram your harmful beliefs.

It's unfortunate that high schools and universities (especially high schools) generally don't mention self-help books. Why is this?

Far too many teachers I know have what I call the "God" complex, the belief that they are better than those that do not have degrees. Many of the self-help books are not written by people with degrees (PhDs) and thus are not considered real knowledge and not written by knowledgeable people to these "highly educated" people.

I've seen it firsthand this "GOD" complex and it is prevalent in colleges and the lower schools; if you do not have a degree those that do ridicule you and bash you as an uneducated idiot. I've seen emails these people send to each other and broadcast to the entire college faculty.

These people are very opinionated and high and mighty. This is NOT every teacher but does cover the majority. I apologize if you are a teacher and do not think like this, if this is the case then sadly you are among the minority of your profession. I know a great deal of professors and teachers and have seen this first hand.

A lot of people I know don’t believe in self-help books and find them to be a con. Yet so many people, including myself, are helped by them. Granted it is a state change in oneself that is really responsible, but sometimes you need to hear it from someone else to make it work for you.

You said it! The truth really is, this is what successful people do. Constantly and never endingly seek out what I call "High Performance Data!" Great post.. and as Hoakey as personal development sounds to the untrained mind, it's the most effective material on the planet. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for the insights, Dominique and scortillion. I was wondering because I think at least I would've been happy if my teachers had digressed and mentioned even one self-help author or book. That's what I would do if I were a teacher and cared about my students. When I was in high school I had no idea that these kinds of books exist.

    Hey,

    Thanks forth wonderful advice!

You are absolutely right in my opinion. Personal growth start from within whenever your ready to make a change in your life. If you are not ready to accept change if it's for the better than you cannot grow in that aspect.

When a person realizes that there are always areas we can grow upon that's when you will truly see some growth in them. The most successful people are the ones that are developing for the better.

I am finding personal growth within myself, because tis year I have chosen not to hang out with my gpfriends that are going to get me any closer to my financial dreams. I'm going to spend this year Improving my position.

    This is my personal growth.

    Thanks again!

    God bless,
    William Veasley

      Great thread!

I used to be sceptical about self-help and laughed at people who listened to the likes of Tony Robbins. I hold a very different opinion today.

I got on the self improvement trail a couple of years ago after a bad breakup. I read a book called "The Game" and was captivated by the underground world of "pick-up artists" and began learning more from the various 'gurus'.

I became a lot more successful with women in the following year and noticed dramatic changes in myself. From there I kind of adapted the self-help approach to all the areas of my life that were lacking or weren't quite where I wanted them to be.

One of my best mentors was David DeAngelo (Some of you know him as Eban Pagan) and I credit him with my love of self-help and personal evolution. He's an amazing teacher with some very profound ideas about personal growth and finding your purpose in life.

I kind of take it for granted now but if I compare who I am today, to who I was only 2 and half years ago the changes are quite frightening. And that's not to say I'm by any means finished. Self-Improvement and learning are a way of life for me now. In fact, they're what brought me to IM and this forum.

The best advice I can give to anyone from what I have learned is.. find your purpose in life. From there the other steps start to seem obvious and everything you do will have a strong sense of meaning and direction to it.
