Does Practice make Perfect?

In one of my last articles, I spoke about about the power of preparation. Now if preparation positions you for success, then practice sends you well on your way.
The truth of the matter is that no-one will reach their fullest potential unless they are willing to practice. People refine old skills and accuire new ones through practice. That's where the tension between where we are and where we ought to be propels us forward. It enables development. If you desire to improve and develop, then you must practice. Done correctly, practice keeps making you better than you were yesterday. If you don't practice, you'll shortchange your potential. Harvey Macky was quoted saying "A good leader understands that anything that has been done in a particular way for a given amount of time is being done wrong. Every single performance can be improved." Since there is always a better way of doing a particular thing, your job is to find out how to do it!
Practice both shows and builds commitment and the true test of commitment is action. Saying that you're committed to a certain thing but never practicing, isn't commitment, it's just talk. It's when you're following through and practicing, your commitment becomes stronger.
You really can't discover your abilities and improve your skills when your in an enviornment where you can't make mistakes. Improvement always require some degree of failure, and you must seek a practice area where experimentation and exploration are allowed.
If you do the little things well, the big ones tend to take care of themselves. As you first start to practice, the gains you make may be small, but they will grow like money earning interst in a bank. Dale Carnegie once said "Don't be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one, it makes you that much stronger."
Many people regard practice as an essentially negative experience. It doesn't have to be that way. The best way to make practice exciting is to think in terms of discovery and development.......Practice makes perfect!

Through my 31 day challenge last month I discovered that practicing a routine over and over and over makes it a habit, and if it’s a good habit it’s productive if it’s a bad habit it can be destructive.

Practice makes better, and better and better.

Keen insight about practice carrying a negative connotation in some circles.

"It's going to take years, and years of practice."

How many times did you hear that statement? How did it make you feel? Probably not great, because practice implies hard work. Forget hard work. Remember inspired action.

Be light about your practice. Enjoy what you do. You might not feel this way 100% of the time but if what you do doesn't feel wonderful at least 80% - 90% of the time you've picked the wrong line of work.

Practice should be fun. If it isn't, your good is being blocked, by you. Lighten up and enjoy the experience.

I agree be inspired, but I know it doesn't take years and years. I did something every day for 31 days and it has stuck like a habit (a good habit) but a compulsion to write now every single day.

I told myself that I was only going to write 2 posts per day and 1 article, but I find myself coming back and posting more and more because it doesn't feel right not to do it.

Not saying it's good, but I believe that with time and writing continuously that my writing and style will develop for the better, as will my spelling and grammar.

I don't think so, I guess the best rule of practice is just to boost up the confidence of the participant and to make everybody prepared.

I think practice makes better. It is not really perfect but at least you will improve by practicing.

Practice is just a matter of preparation among participants, but I don't agree that it will make everything perfect.

That's a good point...I heard a quote once that "It's useless climbing up a ladder if it's against the wrong wall!"

    Sviegert Says:

"Practice does not make perfect. Just what the hell is perfect anyway? Well it doesn't matter. Practice makes you better and makes you over time the best that you can be but it will never make you perfect because perfection does not exist even relatively. Yes practice can make you your ultimate best but it does not make you perfect."

You can't get to a real answer without defining what 'practice' means in this discussion.

The way I understand the word, it doesn't apply to complex endeavors, only isolated skills (like swinging a bat or throwing a ball.) You can't practice marketing, you can only market at your current level of competence.

I prefer 'Learning makes better' over 'practice makes perfect.'

Whatever it is you want to master, just start...keep learning...make adjustments as you learn. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you learn to do it well.
