If you studied eastern philosophies you have come across the idea of living in the now; there is also a great book by Eckhart Tolle, called The Power of Now. If you have not heard of this principle you should read about it.

What is living in the NOW? Living in the now is appreciating where you are now in your life and those that are there. Too many times we are so consumed with tomorrow, next month or next year that we do not spend time or appreciate those around us now. We always say tomorrow I’ll take you here, next week we’ll do this, or next year we’ll do it.

When you live in the future those that are around you pass you by and you miss out on their love and companionship. If you just took a few minutes out of each day to just be with them you’re life and theirs would be so much better and fulfilling.

We are constantly taught that we have to plan for the future, plan for our jobs, our goals, our retirement. All this is true, but we get so caught up in the planning that we don’t take time to enjoy those around us. We don’t really notice them until it is too late.

When someone leaves you or passes on you spend days, weeks or years living in the past saying, “I should have done this, or if I did that,” you’re now living in the past.

Take a moment and reflect on how much time you spend each day either reliving the past or dreaming of the future. They are both no longer real if you look at it carefully. One has already happen and beyond your control to do anything about, the other hasn’t happen yet and not worth worrying about.

Yes you should grieve for those that past and remember them at times, and yes you should prepare for the future. But to dwell on either is not productive or fulfilling, especially for those that are still with you.

Since you “plan” all the time anyway, begin planning to allot yourself time each day NOT to plan and to live in the present moment, the NOW. Be with the people you love, interact with them, love them, laugh with them, and live the moment.

I spent so many years planning and dreaming that loved ones passed on and I realize that I didn’t’ spend as much time with them as I would have liked. It was always tomorrow or next week or in the summer. I have regrets and wish I could go back and change so many things, but that in itself is also destructive because I’m living in the past.

I have come to realize that it is good to reflect on those that are no longer in your life and to remember the good times you had with them, and to look forward to the future and plan for your life, but I have also realized that the true importance is living in the moment.

At first it is difficult and you have to keep reminding yourself to take some time to live NOW, and make it clear to those around you that you are there with them NOW. Live the moment now because it will not come your way again.

If you look carefully you will also discover that most of the anxiety that is in your life comes from worrying about the past and future, very seldom is the present the problem.

Hypnosis, NLP, The Law of Attraction, and many other techniques can and do help but the biggest thing you can begin right now that will benefit you immediately and for years to come is living the moment, living the NOW. BE with the ones that count and drink of life’s precious moments.

Many times when we go places for vacation or a day trip we are too caught up in what we have to do tomorrow to enjoy the moment. We are all guilty of it and need to take measures to live in the moment, or like the old saying goes, “stop and smell the roses”.

Even though I know this I am guilty of not living in the now myself, spend way too much time worrying about going back to work or what I have to do and not enjoying my wife and dog and cat and others that mean so much to me.

So STOP, live in the NOW, and enjoy what life has given you. Succeed sure, but take some time every day to live in the NOW.
