Best thing I ever did...

About a year ago, I came home one evening and began to watch a bunch of shows my DVR had recorded. Four hours later, I realized I had done nothing but sit on the couch. At that moment I decided to turn my cable off and send back the DVR.

It was the best thing I ever did. I suddenly had time to read those books on my shelf, get to the gym and work on those projects that I didn't seem to have time for. Looking back at the past year, I'm amazed at what I have accomplished.

Do I still watch TV? Occasionally, I'll pull up some shows on hulu, but the temptation to fire up the DVR and lay on the couch isn't there. For those of you who say "I'd like to devote more efforts to my IM projects but don't have the time" take a hard look at how much time you're spending in front of the TV. The answer may surprise you.

Here's to a prosperous new year for all.

We had our direct tv taken out two years ago and I can honestly say I do not regret it. When I want to watch someone I watch instant play on netflix. Much more time on my hands since having no tv programs to watch.

Due to being a broke college kid, studying abroad several times and living in an unfurnished apartment with a table and bed, I haven't had TV in over 3 years.

I have never missed it for a single second.

There are so many more things that you can do with your life than support TV advertising...

    Great job man!

Everyone is master of his own time... and you are absolutely right.

TV and Video Games consume just too much, while not giving anything in return.

I am glad to see I am not the only one that doesn't watch much tv. I am so busy that I don't know when I would have time to watch it.

    Great post man! Love it.

We have TV here at my house. My wife watches a little bit but its mostly for the kids. I watch maybe 2 hours a week for sports because it is a huge passion. Other than that, TV is never on and I'm glad. Huge waste of time when there are so many other things we can be doing.

Congrats to you for making the decision and sticking to it. Sounds like it is working out really well.

I remember a long time ago in a galaxy far, far… no wait, wrong story… I remember a long time ago, back in the mid 80s when I joined the service I went through basic and then tech-school and spent about 8 months not watching TV. When I got to my permanent duty station I held out for another 6 months before I got a TV.

I read a lot so I really didn’t miss it, but I needed it for the news so I could keep up on current events. I never really got back into TV as much since. I watch it every night before bed, but to watch the news mainly. I watch a few shows, but nothing that I can’t miss. I refuse to buy a DVR because I don’t want to ever get back to that level of TV watching again.

I rather buy or rent a movie instead.

Nice post. I don't think I could live without my TV though. What I find works well is lying on the couch with the TV on in the background, while I use my laptop to work. Sure it can be a little distracting, but at least that way I don't feel like my IM is a chore because I am stuck doing it in another room. This way I can still keep an eye on the tv, or chat to my wife if I want to.

Watching TV is just a waste of time.I must appreciate you because TV plays as a role of drugs. Both are dangerous and harmful.Drugs kill your health and TV kills your brain and skill.

I wouldn't say that TV is a drug in itself; it depends on how much attention and time we dedicate to it. The more time we watch it, the more it absorb us and the more of an habit it becomes. TV is not evil neither good... it depends on how you use it

I also rarely watch TV any longer. And when I do, maybe because I want to take a break or just "relax", what happens is the complete opposite: I feel completely DEPELETED after an hour or so of watching. Like if my energy was sucked by the screen. Again, not to say that TV is evil... but at least for me, I found out that it is anything BUT a relaxing activity.

So... yeah, watching TV is overrated

Couldn't be a more true statement ever spoken. I think watching too much television has caused more people to waste their lives than just about any other activity or should we say any other inactivity.

Except maybe for playing video games! I wasted almost an entire year of my life playing Everquest video game before I finally woke up and turned the game off and deleted my characters.

I can honestly say it was one of the smartest moves I ever made.

    Later,
    Jason

Most shows on TV are a waste of time, your brain becomes numb, and not much learning going on!

But occasionally it is nice to watch a good movie!

I'm with you 100%. Giving away my xbox was the best thing I ever did. Our time here is so short I don't want to look back and think I wasted it starting into a TV

Good point, and very true indeed! I been successful since the day I stopped watching TV altogether about 7 years ago! Now some folks here would of rather not hear this, but it's time someone burst their comfort bubble.

  • This is a great topic! Even though my parents watch TV shows, I stay away from TV as much as I could but occasionally I give my attention to it if the show exhibits positive moments.
