Need to Prove Yourself Right

What is it that makes people “NEED” to prove themselves right?

A person will have a belief whether it’s God, Allah, Buddha, or no belief at all. Then you’ll have another person that just HAS to try and prove the first person wrong and themselves right.

Personally I believe it’s either an inferiority complex or superiority complex or a combination of both. After all why else would someone have a NEED to prove someone wrong? And if you disagree with the person trying to prove you wrong you become stupid, you don’t understand, you don’t look at the facts, you are closed minded or some other insult that is meant to bully you into changing your mind or try to make you feel inferior and wrong about your belief.

I believe in a God, a supreme being, a super intelligence, or super-consciousness, something that is behind the perfect balance of the universe. But that is MY belief and you don’t have to waste your time trying to prove me wrong. You can have your belief and I can have mine. It’s simple, we are free, for now, and are entitled to our own beliefs.

If you feel like your belief has to be the one that is correct and you need to bash and shame, and insult those that do not believe in you then YOU have a problem. Every single person is entitled to their own thoughts, their own beliefs, and is free to express them. If you don’t agree, then fine, say so and move on. There are others that believe in what you feel is correct and those that believe in what I say are correct.

This “NEED” to prove oneself correct and the ONLY true “fact” is what leads to so much useless violence and wars. I can never understand why someone feels this NEED to pressure others to believe how they do.

I know people that believe in God, others that believe in other things and those that do not believe, but you know that is their right, I accept that and all I, and other that have their own beliefs, ask is to be left alone by those that “NEED” to be right.

There are people I will never agree with, fine, I don’t have to and I don’t have a problem with them either, until they get in my face.

Back in high school, I had this good friend that was SUPER religious and was trying his best to “save” me and convert me. I tried saying no a number of times politely but could not make him stop. So I started pressuring him that Anthology was the truth and what he believed wasn’t. When he asked me why I kept pushing this on him, I asked him why he had to push his belief on me. The light click, we both stopped and we remain friend to this day.

Even though I believe in a God like my friend was trying to convince me of, I do not hold the same belief as him. Am I right and he wrong? Is the atheist right? Who knows, no one does except the dead.

These are my beliefs and my thoughts and you know what is really great? You have your own and are entitled to them, until those that NEED to be right try and take those rights away.

I think one of the problem is that some belief systems includes the "you shall have no other belief system than this".

So, a true believer will really believe that everyone is messed up, and they try to help you! From their point of view, of course.

Some people say that science is the only way to find answers, some turn to religion. Sure, science answers some questions and religion other questions. And then again, some of the greatest scientists had/have a belief in a god/religion.

Why do some people waste time trying to compare belief systems? What works for them is what matters... well, at least according to my belief system.

WELL said!!! And I agree... but again those beleifs were put into place by people that NEED to be right and the best way to do that is to state right in the "belief" that other are wrong or cannot have any other!

      Great point.

Scortillion Nice Insight on Peoples belief system. People waste time and energy on trying to prove that their belief or religion is the only true one. People should focus on treating each person with dignity and respect regardless of their beliefs.

All I know is that you really need to believe in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, how can you believe in anything else then.

Like naruq said, everyone should respect each and everyone, no matter what religion or belief someone has.

You are both correct, respect each others beliefs and believe in yourself! Great additions!

Til this day, I'm an Atheist. Do I care what people have to say? No. Do I care what other people believe? No, I don't. My only rule is --- keep your religion to yourself. I've seen too many good friends come to an end because they found out somewhere down the road that they have different religious beliefs (when, technically, they're all the same). To me, that's stupid. I have a friend that I've known since middle school. I love her like a sister. She's always been a devoted christian (her dad is a Minister). She was probably the only person who never judged me or mistreated me for my beliefs. We have conversations sometimes, and she'll say things to express her belief. But these things aren't to disrespect me. Just like I'm able to express my views. We have that mutual respect. I guess you can say we see past petty differences and respect each other as people.

Too bad the majority don't see it that way....
    I totally agree with you.

I wanted to respond to you in greater detail yesterday LD but didn't have time until now. I agree with you 100%. I believe that people are entitled to their own beliefs and should care less what beliefs others have.

I believe in some type of super consciousness, not necessarily the God they talk about in the bible, but something of a power or force or energy with an intelligence that links everything together. I, like you have friends that believe in God the way the bible says they should, but who cares?

As long as they have their beliefs and don't get angry with me or nasty because I believe differently we remain friends.

The people that get obsessed about what others believe and "NEED" to change others beliefs have a problem with their own beliefs in my opinion. If you are secure in your beliefs and your own mind then there is no need for others to agree and no need to change others beliefs.

What is needed is respect for each other and their beliefs.

This reminds me of an incident that happened about ten years ago. My uncle is a staunch Catholic and my aunt is a Born-Again Christian. They played a spiritual tug of war, and I was the rope they were pulling in opposite directions. My uncle wanted me to remain a Catholic. My aunt wanted me to join her church. They would say not-so-pleasant things about each other while trying to convince me that they were right and the other was wrong.

The end result? I left the Catholic Church. I still believe in God, but I'm not a Christian anymore. I realized that religion can be divisive and I don't want to put my faith in the hands of a few people who claim to possess the truth in its entirety.

Anyway, it's a waste of energy to try to prove ourselves right. We all have different ways of seeing things. I think we ought to respect one another and learn to accept and even celebrate our differences. We can disagree without being disagreeable.

I can understand why people are so fanatic about their beliefs and that's fine with me personally as long as they don't take violent measures. "You live your life and I'll live mine."

Don’t get me wrong I believe in a higher power, I love celebrating Christmas and Do NOT want to call it a “Holiday Tree”, to me those are just another bunch of extremist that want to push their own agenda.

The way I see it is we are all free to believe how we want to and as long as it is not forced upon me I don’t care what others believe!

Calling something a Christmas Tree, or wishing me Merry Christmas is nice, and the majority of the time comes from the heart; those that want to ban those words anger me because they are trying to force their beliefs on ME!

If you don’t like it DON’T say it!

Far too many people just have to be right, they cannot stand it if you don’t believe them, these people are the ones that have the weakest of self-confidence and need other to justify their beliefs, or they are after control and need to control you through your beliefs and fears.

Because that person knows he or she is going to die.

It's the one thing that we know for sure is going to happen to all of us, including me, and I know I cant do a damned thing about it.

And that helplessness, that lack of control, colors everything else in my life.

And it makes us all, to greater or lesser extents, control freaks about our opinions. Especially about the 'Big Issues' like religion etc.

Because, if we're not right, then it feels, a little bit, like the death we all know is coming, and can't control.

So we try to be right, because it makes us feel, um, immortal.

Sort of. For a little while.

        That's my theory.

Hmmm... could be? But are we SURE there is NOTHING we can do about dying? If you read the bible people lived for hundreds of years, and what is really possible with the power of the mind?

In the laboratory they were able to keep a muscle sample alive indefinitely by feeding it the nutrients it needed to stay alive.

We are told and program from our birth that we are going to die after a certain period of time, but do we really have to, or are we just programmed to believe that like we are programmed to believe a lot of other incorrect stuff?

The power of the mind has yet to be fully tapped, who knows what we are truly capable of?

One of the reasons I used the bible as an example is that so many people believe that is it the word of GOD yet they cannot believe they can live 100s if not 1000s of years when it say right in the bible that people did!

Personally I believe immortality is possible with the power of the mind, we just have to figure out how to tap it and use it!

That’s the MAJOR problem in the world today, people cannot stand letting other people alone; they NEED to feel like they are in control.

Let’s face it everything is about control when you try to FORCE your beliefs on others. I don’t care if it’s religion, politics, economics, social, or whatever, if you need to FORCE someone to believe in what you do then YOU have the problem.
