That is so awesome that your Dad taught you that lesson. I was not fortunate to have that in my family--actually quite the opposite. "You can't do that, that will never work" blah, blah, blah. It took me many years to get out of that mindset and get to the point where you are at.

Last night I was speaking with my first cousin, Irene, who was an only child and one I had always thought was spoiled and given everything. We have had a good relationship over the years and believe me she has wanted for nothing. Imagine my surprise when she informed me during our conversation how she is going to her son's place today to fix his washing machine.

"Oh, yes, she said. I can fix everything. Anything that's broken or in need of care just give it to me. That's the way I was reared."

I should have known because her grandparents reared my father and that's where the mindset came from. All the family members on that side have the same inbred principles.

Shirley I sympathise with you because my ex husband had that "you can't do it" attitude and it tended to pull me down. You have to get above it.

All it takes is thought, a positive attitude, and a willingness to overcome.

All things are possible and there is no such word as can't. The worst thing is to not figure it out and to say "I can't do that". Of course you can. Learn how it works and be the master of your destiny.

Thanks for your story. I think we need to remind ourselves that nothing really is impossible for us. Opposition comes into our lives to reveal weaknesses in us. Not to stop us completely. Keeping the main thing the main thing is key.

Linda you hit the nail on the head. We need to have the desire to solve it. Thats the point I have made in the Christmas thread. If we don't have the desire to fix our own house up, namely the planet on which we live, then it will die. Those who think it can't are wrong because it is already happening.

Think positive, live well and enjoy what you do. Don't throw your life away thinking that you are a non achiever but rather that you achieve within yourself what does it for you. If this is not happening look harder and do better.

I tend to agree.. I have a quote visible from my office desk that says "There's at least one solution to every problem", and it's proven true many times for me. Though usually this doesn't seem to be the case from where I was 'standing' at the time..

I agree with the first quote but Johnny Walker means something different, given the name. It refers to being off the planet most of the time thanks to alcoholic addiction.

Alcoholism is a negative, a nothing, but it too has a solution for those with the desire and conviction to overcome it. The best way is never to start and to resist the festivities that encourage it. The people who think that this is life, to booze out with their mates, are already dead.
They need to look into the mirror of truth and see themselves for what they are and the example they set for others, especially their children.

I've always taken the word "can't" to be an unfinished thought. Like "Can't this way" or "Can do it now" but never having a finite meaning - unless you let it. There are usually ways around doing things or getting what you need, but ultimately it's up to you to use your brain to find ways of making it happen.

Recently I have used the word myself in posts. I am apt to say things like "why can't I get help" when I suppose I really mean "where do I go for help" or "who is willing to help me?" I think we use the word without thought when some other term would be more appropriate.

Norma, thanks for this thread and for sharing part of your life with us. It's truly great to be able to know how others have overcome obstacles to succeed! In fact, that is something that I personally love... I guess that's kind of why I love biographies, or simply reading about episodes of someone's life... most of the times I learn something! Thanks again!

I agree, Dagmar, there are so many ways we can overcome obstacles and problems if we just accept that there is a solution.

I have had problems with huge trees growing in a neighbors house which overshadowed my back garden and made it impossible for me to grow vegetables and things. One day I was looking at those trees, probably around 50 - 60 feet high gums, and I asked the Spirit to get rid of them for me.

I always turn to this source when I don't seem to know what to do myself. Within seconds of asking I was told to ring the electricity company as one of the trees was overhanging the wires and this was dangerous.

A few days later a notice was put in my box saying that the power would be off for a couple of hours on a certain day for tree removal. I could not believe it when the chain saws started and down came the trees. Not only the one overhanging the wires but the neighbor took down the lot. Now my yard is bursting with sunshine and the vegies are doing great.

That being said I should add that I am a tree lover and have several around my house but they are on the south side so the sun is not blocked from anyone else. In the southern hemisphere this is probably the equivalent of your north side.

Obviously too the neighbor wanted the trees down as they were a problem to him as well. Isn't it wonderful when things work out.

The tough economic times are upon us and there is no such word as can't when it comes to survival. My parents and senior relatives all survived the last depression. They did not come out of it wealthy, in fact it was hard, but the main point is survival.

Its a challenge that we can meet and get around if we diversify and take our thinking to new levels. Whe I started out in selling it was at a time of an economic downturn but I was inspired by the adage "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

I never consider myself tough but I did OK and again there were those words ringing in my ears "there is no such word as can't." We just have to do it and get on with it.

Oh boy, was I challenged earlier this week.

Some kind soul, Christine, emailed me to check the links in my sig. Every site had been hacked. When I checked sites not in the sig sure enough they had been done as well.

Its a frightening thing when your Internet publishes sites read 'site hacked by so and so.'

I have to say I panicked a bit. Put a post in the main forum for help and sweated out what to do next. There were suggestions to go into the sites and find where the code is and remove it. That was not so easy as most of them are in Site Studio, which is a design platform offered by my host.

A few very generous and wonderful souls offered to go into my sites and do it for me. One in particular I had no problems with as I know his skills with software and so on but the challenge was there for me to figure this out.

I put in a help ticket to the host and went into the web shell and sure enough, there, bold as brass, were inserted index pages on each of my sites. They contained 408mb of code and nothing else.

The next thing was to check if the sites were affected in SS and to my relief they were still there. So it was then a case of removing the index page with the hackers code and republishing the site.

Wow, it worked and I did not loose anything.

Meanwhile I got a message back from the support team to tell me how the hacker had got in and what to do to prevent it happening again. As the sites are on Linux there is very good security but apparently the Chmod had been changed, probably only on one site.

With relief flowing through me I was rather proud of myself that I could accomplish this. It just goes to show how fear and fright can stop the brain working.

None the less I am very very grateful to those who took the trouble to point out about the code and for the offers of help. This is a mighty place to belong to and giving to others, as these people have offered to do, has huge rewards.

Thanks again to all who pointed out the problem and helped me to get the wisdom to fix it.
