Tenacity: Have you got it?

31 replies
Today was my running in the mountains day, and I came across this tenacious vine valiantly climbing a tall cedar tree. Now, it's going to take this vine years to get to the top of this cedar, and there are no guarantees that it ever will. Yet, you don't see the vine giving up and going off in search of an easier tree to climb.

See ... the vine understands the SECRET TO SUCCESS. By never stopping, by never backtracking, by steadily climbing (with dogged tenacity) it will succeed. Now, you need to ask yourself this: Are you as tenacious? Will you succeed?

    Actually, the reason the vine is climbing the tree is because it needs the support of the tree to grow to its full length - it can't do it without relying on the tree. So maybe the vine is not a great example of the secret to success after all. I think if your success is dependent on something or someone else then you are always running a very risky business.

    Kevin,

    Not sure about Tenacity, but I've got Audacity, and that seems to be a good sound strategy for what I do.

    J/K

    I think a lot of folks would be shocked to find out how long it can take to generate constant income on the web, especially if they are not familiar with the sales process as it relates to income generation.

    But that can all be overcome with experience, and that takes time, which takes the tenacity you mentioned just to hang in there.

    Even folks who appear to have made it almost 'overnight' display tenacious tendencies that go far beyond what the casual observer might guess. And in that regard you can, to some degree, replace a portion of the time needed for the learning curve with a tenacious attitude and see results.

    Tenacity has a key element that underlies it's power and that element is focus. But focus alone won't do it without the ability to persist.

    As other have said, it's a good thought to start the week off with. Even if it is a 'holiday' today here in the States.

      Funny how Kevin's thread and President's Day here in the U.S. should come together like this.

      One of our greatest presidents, Abe Lincoln, had some of the worst setbacks a person can experience. Including a nervous breakdown.

      His tenacity kept him going.

      A common list of the failures of Abraham Lincoln:

      * 1831 - Lost his job
      * 1832 - Defeated in run for Illinois State Legislature
      * 1833 - Failed in business
      * 1835 - Sweetheart died
      * 1836 - Had nervous breakdown
      * 1838 - Defeated in run for Illinois House Speaker
      * 1843 - Defeated in run for nomination for U.S. Congress
      * 1848 - Lost re-nomination
      * 1849 - Rejected for land officer position
      * 1854 - Defeated in run for U.S. Senate
      * 1856 - Defeated in run for nomination for Vice President
      * 1858 - Again defeated in run for U.S. Senate

      Then finally this:

      * 1860 - Elected President (success)

        Yes siree Matt. Love that!

        Mr. Lincoln was the greatest president we had and he was just a man!

        Should give us faith that we can all do if we attempt to do.

    Great illustration, Kevin. To succeed in IM, one not only has be tenacious, but resilient as well. This trait can be best seen in the bamboo plant, which possesses exceptional resiliency. Believe or not, bamboo has greater tensile strength than steel. Instead of being stiff and unyielding, it flexes just the right amount in the face of strong winds and pressure to remain intact.

    There is also the eliment of adapting,

    As far as the vines growth:

    the vine adapts to weather changes

    the vine adapts to the rain amounts

    the vine adapts to the direction it grows

    As far as your marketing
    :
    You need to adapt:

    to SEO changes,

    to Google alogrithm changes,

    to product trend changes,

    to economical changes,

    to niche changes etc.

    That is the key: To ADAPT to changes.......and Not CRY and complain and post threads like:

    "google has changed, making all my rankings go to page 11+ on google"
    or
    "Article marketing is dead, we are doomed"

    Adaptation is part of marketing, traffic generation and business!

    I'm not quite sure I want to emulate the vine.

    The vine picked a tree that it doesn't even know it can conquer, and will just blindly proceed to climb and climb and climb in the hope that one day it will reach the top.
    Didn't it do it's niche research? Perhaps by "choosing" the Cedar it's bitten off more than it can chew Perhaps if it had chosen a smaller tree that it knew it could reach the pinnacle of it might do better, instead of forging on regardless.

    I think mindlessly forging ahead year after year without any planning won't do that vine any good. Still it might strike it lucky.

      However, by selecting a smaller tree it would never reach up into the canopy of the forest where the full sunshine is. So, by choosing a smaller tree (or selecting a niche with little competition, yet little room for growth) it actually may stunt it's chances for success.

      It told me that it's made quite a few nitrogen fixations per month and is now on track to start pulling in some pretty good chlorophyl.

    Hi Bro,

    Awesome message. Totally agree with you!
    But you know people will do everything they can to discourage you,
    and get you to quit your plans and go follow mediocre life!

    It is always great to see how rewarding it is to just STICK to the plan

    Great lesson Kevin

    I think this is one of the key secrets that successful people share in common. Never, ever give up, no matter how much the chips are down. And, so many of us have been in a place where we've wanted to throw in the towel.

    But, it's the ability to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going that leads to eventual success at whatever it is you want to achieve.

    So, I'm doing that climb right now and I'll see you guys at the top!

    Very nice analogy, Kevin.

    I first read something similar in a powerful little ebook called "Success Engineering".

    Think of "success" as being at the surface of a sphere, of which YOU are at the center.

    No matter which way you go, as long as you keep on moving in the same direction, sooner or later you WILL reach the surface ("succeed").

    But if you keep changing direction, backtracking, or going off on tangents, you'll be circling around near the center - and never reach it.

    All success

    The vine is moving UPWARD, onward to the sun . . . it may not be able to thrive around the floor.

    I am tenacious, and I am already achieving success, according to my perspective.

    I will achieve my goals because I will NOT quit.

    Great confirmation!

    I believe it got to do with how sure you want something. If it is something that you definitely and desparately wanted, almost always you will not backtrack. The keyword is SURE and are you SURE!

    Yo Kevin

    I used to always complain about whiners and complainers.

    Now I realize the reason why was because I WAS a whiner and a complainer.

    I hated in them what I saw in me.

    Now I am a DOER and I don't have time to hang around with the whiners and complainers, let a less complain about them!
