Best Way To Build Trust

The super secret, crazy, out of the box way to build trust -

Be trustworthy.

Just my two cents for the day. Seen some schemey-looking stuff on here and in my e-mail inbox lately. Don't do it if you wouldn't want it done to you.

Give and take. You can't be trusted if you can't show trust.

That's true, too. Easy to get cynical if you are not careful.

I believe some one can build trust by being consistent in their actions. Majority of the people those actions are good one but there are always a few rotten apple who misuse this trust thing. I am certain that one can only be cheated or lie too when you blindly trust someone. It happens in life or in business.

I would not use the phrase "build trust". To be honest, the correct words are "manage trust" Your customers and your clients are not your best friends and there are not your enemies either. If they thought for one minute that being on your list are anything else would not benefit their business they would leave.

The best way to think about this process is your Doctor. He are she is not your friend, but they are their to help you. And if you did not trust one of them would you keep listening to their advice?

Based on my experience, you can manage your relationships with good sound advice. Honestly, that is what most subscribers want from you, your advice based on your personal experience.

What I see all the time is marketers are trying to sell you stuff. People buy from what they believe is a trusted adviser, period.

    Remember "know, like, trust..."?

    Trust is just step #3.

First, give them something to know you by, then show something about the true you so they can grow to like you... then show them you're worth the trust they're already starting to show towards you. It is more simple to do it than to explain it..

I agree with the original post. The best way to build trust is to have the true intentions of a trustworthy person. If your true intention is to scam people out of there money. Excellent points James. I was thinking more along the lines of being a service provider, which is what I do most, but you are absolutely right in the context of list building.

      Hey Justin,

You touch on a good point that I think someone else brought up as well. You have to give trust, too. You cannot expect anyone to trust you either if you don't. I know this can be tough for some folks here who have been scammed before (not necessarily by someone on the WF).

      Vagabund,

That is so true. My wife is in sales, and we were having that very discussion the other day. In fact, she has now made her goal in March to listen as much as possible to her customers so she can be a better salesperson.

It's interesting that many people believe that agreeing with everyone will make them seem more trustworthy. But like 'yes men' in business, those that always agree seem to be lying some of the time. There's no need to disagree with others, but you should also have your own opinions once in a while.

    Casey,
There is no "super secret crazy way"
That's in the same category as "How do I get Rich Quick".

The strategy that works for us is built on good old fashioned "relationship building".

Referrals help open doors. Being interviewed by a trusted source helps too. You just need to set up a venue that creates these opportunities.

When you engage people: Tell a personal story about yourself that reveals your vulnerabilities. Whatever you do... don't just sell the product. Reveal something about yourself, open up, become transparent and you will find that the people you are looking to entrust you will do the same. When you have accomplished that stage, you have a very solid footing to foster trust relations.

A few ways we do this:
    1) We host face to face networking events
    2) We produce video web shows where we interview industry leaders (authors, business mavericks) about what interests them
    3) We give away free content that helps people

These techniques do not guarantee instant success. " look at it as more of a marathon, not a sprint."

There actually is an easy way to build trust and it is simply to be a man/woman of your word.

Do what you say you will and deliver what you promise.

MissTerraK hit the nail on the head. The best way to build trust is to do what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it.

So many people don't do what they say they're going to do (whether it be a returned phone call, an email, delivering a product on time, etc) that when you ACTUALLY deliver on your promises you have already begin to set yourself apart from your competitors.

I understand where you are coming from and believe that building strong relationships are important too, however without trust, a "good" relationship will never be developed.

Reputation definitely comes into play when one seeks to form a relationship with someone. How does someone receive a good reputation? By doing what they say, and delivering what they promised.

I have never once built a good relationship with someone who didn't do just that, because I couldn't trust them.

Another great way to build/manage trust is to be open and offer transparency.

When you start off a sale/email/blog post, etc. with genuine intentions, to help others first before helping yourself, you'll always be rewarded. Keeping that mindset has helped me build trust me my clients.

Make it about them, not about you.

You build trust by having an intention to brighten the other person's day, add value to their life, and not want anything from them. Just give for the fulfillment and sake of giving. They will naturally sense that and trust you with their wallets, their passwords, and their deepest secrets.
