Why don't most people get what they want in life?

by 21 comments
...Because most people don't know what they want.

The key to getting what you want is to be VERY SPECIFIC!

1. What? 1 million dollars

2. When? in 3 years

3. How? internet marketing (too vague)...selling all natural, organic no stick lipstick to socially conscious career woman between 30 - 40 years of age in North america on the internet. (very specifc)

4. Then what? Donate 10% to an animal shelter and start a family.

I sort of agree, but I know many people who know what they want but they don't have a real plan to get what they want and the drive to take the consistent action to make it happen. There is no one answers as to why people do not get what they want. In a beta test of a system I designed there were three outcomes. People who did not do the system and therefore failed, those who did it but not long enough for success and those who stuck with it until they were successful. So the first category may fit your description, the second group found out what they wanted but did not achieve it through lack of consistent effort and the third group succeeded.

Completely agree. If you want it bad enough and dedicate time and energy you will get it. You have to really want the thing you're going after, or you WILL LOSE interest easily once things start getting tough. Then you start to question yourself, and doubting yourself, and thats not good.

Now of course, don't be stubborn with it either, you can change your mind because your wants and desires change over time, just make sure that its consistent with your values.

There are many suicides in the world! I think most of them just because they don't know what they want or they think they are in need of nothing!

Most people don't get exactly what they want out of life because their goals seem so unachievable and out of reach that they become overwhelmed and quit.

Focus on smaller daily goals and ENJOY THE RIDE to find true happiness.

Never be satisfied (always improve) and Always be content (find joy in the journey)!

    Hi Andrew,

    Valid points.

Also, most spend the majority of their time thinking about what they don't want. Watch what comes out of someone's mouth, and you can see why they live the life they live.

Get clear, get specific, hash out the details. Seeing what you want in detail causes you to think less about what you don't want, for you're excited about what you do want.

    Thanks for sharing!

Many times people don't get what they want because they don't want it bad enough to commit to what it takes to receive it, however our way of thinking has a lot to do with it also. I call it "stinkin thinkin"

Think positive about your endeavors and don't go by what you see. If you set goals and work toward them, you will see results. Sometimes after about 5 months, you will see that your goals actually change a bit. It's a great adventure, so enjoy the ride!

What a strange thread post! If we try to give beneficial ideas to every one, I think it w;ll be better for all of us rather than useless strategies of here and there.........!

The key is to stop wanting things altogether. Just do what feels right to you moment to moment and you'll eventually get what you REALLY want.

Sometimes to be successful you definitely have to do things that don't feel "right." (And that's part of the fun.) You can't grow if you don't stretch yourself. :-)

I've abandoned the concept of "success" a long time ago...

(Haha) I still think it's a good way of explaining many aspects of life.

For instance if you want to be "successful" at overcoming important challenges, you're going to have to do something that doesn't feel right.

The key really is breaking down a large goal into bite sized chunks.

I'm an optimist, but I think it's simplistic to think that merely being articulate about what you want to achieve would guarantee its attainment. A lot more is required, there are a lot of articulate ''failures''.

There are no guarantees. You just have to do your very best and hope...

too many options. lack of clear direction and focus. but some people live a harder life due to unexpected mishaps around them. but again action speaks louder than words!

History shows us that all sorts of people achieve all manner of amazing things when they learn to focus their mind, harness their motivation and stay committed to their vision through purposeful action. The key technique or strategy for achieving this state of mind and way of being is goal-setting.
