Try this to kill stress

Follow your breathing.

Stress is the by-product of worrying about the future or feeling miserable about the past.

Following your breath keeps you present, and when you're present, the future and past don't exist.

Try it today, and let me know how it works.

I couldn't agree more Ryan. If everyone took 15 minutes a day to just close their eyes and follow their breath, the world would be a better place.

Thanks for such great advise. I just watched the movie "the secret" over the weekend and it's about positive thinking, etc. One man said we should have the attitude of gratitude because you can' be depressed or down when you are grateful for things.

We have many things in our lives to be thankful for, so concentrate on those and things will start going your way

This statement is so true! Simple, basic but profoundly, ridiculously powerful.

Sadly :\ millions of people would look at this and go "that won't work for me," or "I don't have the time," like you said Ryan in your video about people being in a constant state of panic.

Well, at least we're not primitive!

Focused breathing and being in the "Now" are always great advice.

Here's a tip: Start with an exhale. It will help you focus on your breathing and psychologically help you expel the stress.

It seems so simple. But it's alluring. I'll test it.

I'm convinced about the rightness of what you wrote about our attitude towards the past and the future. Yet, both shouldn't have such constraining effects. The past, we cannot change. The future, no guarantees that we'll see it. All we've got is the present. Let's give it all we've got.

I read about how vital breathing properly is. It's in our nature to take such things for granted. I'll test your suggestion.

    Thanks,

      Always good advice!

Something I've been working on is making sure I'm sitting up straight while working. I have a tendency to hunch toward the computer, and I know sitting up allows me to breathe easier.

Since I've been doing this, I've found myself less frustrated and more focused.

So yeah, breathing exercises and following your breathing really works. Thanks for the post!

You're right when you said that following your breath keeps you present, and when you're present, the future and past don't exist. People usually think of things they missed in the past and keep on worrying on unknown events of the future. Somehow your advice can help people to keep their sanity and regret of the past and future but enjoy their PRESENT.

This is a good way of temporarily alleviating your internal reaction to stress.
But if the stress is caused by - say - a sniper across the street, the way to alleviatre the stress is to take out the sniper.
Eliminate the stressor and then you can breathe deeply all day long.

I like that - "when you're present, the future and past don't exist." It makes me think of the movie "50 First Dates" in which Drew Barrymore has no recollection from one day to the next. In a way, that would be kind of freeing!

I agree that keeping the focus on today is a way of reducing stress. Once someone told me that when my mind is jumping into future catastrophes that haven't happened yet, I should pause and ask myself "Wait a minute...what day is it?" That simple question brings the focus back to today.

I also like this advice. Yoga and meditation can help so much. Learning to breathe and pay attention to your breath helps in meditation too.

I also find that when I am thinking of negative things, it helps to actively try to think of positive things instead. Like attentive breathing, it sounds overly simple, but works, a little better with practice. :-)

Yes, definitely do this. Time your breathes with your heartbeat. Inhale for 5 seconds, hold for 3 seconds, then exhale for 5 seconds. You'll get a headrush from it. And exhale from your throat muscles. You should be able to hear yourself making this sound.

And while you're at it, try this little exercise: think without using words. It's incredibly difficult to do, but it's very powerful. Think about that.

Breathing relieves pain,You may not realize its connection to how you think, feel and experience life. For example, what happens to your breathing when you anticipate pain? You probably hold your breath. Yet studies show that breathing into your pain helps to ease it.

Hey love this post. When i was beginning my IM, i was stressed so muuuch on the confusions, bugs and all glitches etc, and therefore i tried to find a way to relieve my stress, and what you said "Follow your breathing," is exactly what i did! But wait i didn't only just do that, whenever i felt like i needed to relieve stress i went out to my local park, which is 2minute walk and i sat down looking at kids play basketball, soccer and tennis, just to see them play so actively calmed my mind down, and relieved my stress. It seems I really did like others to be positive and happy. Anyways this is what everyone who is into IM career should do, go to local park/beach/anywhere where you can calm your mind down and relax yourself.
