Money Or Happiness...not the normal comparison

Money versus happiness, this has been discussed at length. But let me lead you with a question and I want honest answers...

If you can get check right now for $100,000 but have to live one year less...would you?

And that's all you know. You have no idea when or how you will eventually die, you just know it would happen 1 year earlier if you took the cash.

Seriously, let's think about this...I can honesty say I don't know how I would answer.

Money leads to happiness and that's the fact, we are not permanent in this world, so as long as we have time to enjoy lets do it and who knows tomorrow we can not wake up anymore.

I don't think that money leads to happiness. I think you eventually get bored with anything you get in life except love.

Yes, I would, if so, I want the check. Because it can help me have my dream come true - travelling everywhere. To live happily.

But, in fact. It is hard to answer the quesion about money and happiness. It depends on lots of.
Also, it depends on how we think.
Good luck and be happy everyday.

Since I don't know when I will die, I will not know whether I live one year more or one year less. So I will not feel any difference.
But with $100,000 check NOW, I definitely will feel the difference

    No.

Because I can make $100,000. But I can't create any more time than what I have. So I'd take the extra year.

Without a second thought I would turn down that check.

Put any number on that check. I would NOT accept it. Could be a check for 10 billion dollars. I don't care.

Nobody can tell me the value that year would have. Also, I don't know, if there might be someone special that would rather have spent that same amount than seeing me die one year earlier. (I can tell you I would HATE my future spouse, if someone came to me after her death and told me that she could have lived one year longer!)

I know that learning how to make money is fun because I enjoy building up my own independence. I enjoy the trip and so I don't need such a shortcut. Maybe this has also something to do with integrity, I don't know.

Ahh, it's not really a shortcut though, it's just a check that you can spend on anything...sure it can be a shortcut...you can hire an army of outsources, a high end coach, etc but its not necessarily a shortcut.

My point for raising the question is this...

Most people automatically say, time is more important than anything, I would never give up any time for any amount of money, but to me that seems terribly illogical.

With any substantial amount of money, you can work less, give more to charity, whatever your personal economic utility is.

So there IS a relationship between time and money. Even if you are a billionaire and I said I will give you $10,000 for X less time in your life...there will be a value greater than 0 for that X. This value will be different for everybody, but I truly believe it cannot be 0. Maybe the x is 1/100 of a second they would give up of their life but its not 0.

Just food for thought. I came to similar conclusions as most people here until I really sat down and thought about it an length.

I think, that most of you're Awnsers are funny. So you guys so you would prefer the time instead of the money. Ok think about it. How long does it Take you to make 100k.I mean how much time do you have to invest to do that ? some people take one day to do it other people 12 Months ore 6 Months most even much much more. So you would logically save time of you're Financial Smart by getting the check . I would save like arround 12 to 18 Months and I cane make more than 1 Million with ****ing 100k much much more..I wouldn't mind cutting back on the End maybe I will get 80 instead of 81 the Joy is in the youth and growing Older but not in the last year.
          Just my 2 cents

No, I would not trade a year of my life for any amount.

To the question of "Money or Happiness." I'll have both!

I feel that the question of 1 year vs $100k is not really about happiness.
Money and work are part of a happy life. So, I can't imagine myself being happy and feeling secure knowing that if my child will get sick tomorrow I will not be able to afford the treatment. No way I will feel happy.
Happiness is all about balance. Not about each of the elements of the balance.

I would trade 1 year for 100k since currently I don't earn 100k a year. So it seems like a good investment. Many people trade all of their lives for much less at their 9-5 jobs. But I would use the $100k not to "be happy" but to make more money by helping others.

All I know is that money cannot buy happiness
But with money, you will have more ways and means to find that happiness compare to having none at all.
with $100,000 and one year to live? Scary...

Absolutely not, Life is a wonderful gift. Money it's just a bunch of dead presidents. I work because I love working, money is a side product. I've learned to spend every moment doing what I love, except when I have to go to the dentist. Money always seems to take care of itself. I don't really spend much anyhow, too busy having fun!

I suspect some people aren't thinking their answers through, or haven't yet experienced true love or a real friendship.

At first glance, I thought maybe that's a good idea. Then this line from Tashi's post made me realize the right answer.

"Nobody can tell me the value that year would have."

Except that I can put a value on that year, it's just not a number or anything material. I didn't finish reading the post after that line, I immediately wrote the rest of this post. Then I looked back and saw that we have some similar thoughts on the matter.

I expect to have family and friends around me for the rest of my life. I expect to have relationships which will last until the end of my life on earth, which are each worth more than any amount of money.

I of course don't know whether I or my wife will live longer. But if living one year longer means possibly one more year with her, I would trade all the money and material possessions in the world for that year. I would trade it for one day.

Even if somehow I end up friendless and the last of my family, I still would have a mission to continue, for as long as possible.

Before the birth of my son Evan, I would of said, "For $50,000,000.00 I'll bite"

However, now that I have a cute healthy baby boy, I want to share my life with him; watch him as he grows; teach him values and principles I think are important.

There will likely be a day that I would gladly pay $100,000...or any dollar amount for that matter...for just one more year...one more month....one more week...or even one more day. This, to me, is the easiest question I've been asked in a very long time.

I wouldn't take the 100k... you cant put a monetary value on life. In that extra year I could probably make a lot more than that.
