You Tracking Your Stuff?

It's a big deal!

Here's what I mean. I've been tracking my progress, everyday through writing down on a sheet of paper what exactly I did (wrote an article for one of my blogs, interacted with people on the net for a while, worked on another project etc..) and after the week is over, I look at exactly what I did, what each action contributed to and even how much time I spent on each thing.

I do this for a number of reasons. First, I keep track of the time I spend on each thing which is a great way to become a lot more precise with how much time you spend on tasks.

Secondly, I can then do a meta study (a study of the progress sheet) to determine how much action I am taking toward what goals.

So if I want to gain 100,000 subscribers by next February on one of my websites, am I spending more time and engaging in more tasks that have something to do with that? Or am I putting more time doing other tasks that may not be as significant in my hierarchy (order of goals by importance)?

Simple little measurements that take less than 10 minutes a day do a great job at refining the hell out of the way you operate! Works for me. What do you guys think? Have any similar strategies?

Thanks for reading.

Yes... I keep tracking my progress too. I found the best way to go forward is by setting up your goals first. It's important to have a clear picture in mind of your short-term, mid- term and long-term goals. So my goals include a course of action for 1 month, 1 Year and 5 Years. I come up with clear results I want to achieve ( making x amount of money from doing y ) and then I plan my steps of achievement accordingly.

@Zesh - Thanks for your... reply.

@AnimalSpirit - Nice name! Interesting approach. I definitely believe in setting goals first as well. However, the formulation of events and people are are influential enough to alter the way you feel about goals, in many cases. I think 5 year plans are mainly limiting, in most cases unless you realize that flexibility is key and develop the awareness to know that your mind is bound to change in many ways over the course of 5 years. Definitely good to plan ahead that far, I just use the approach of planning vague.

But then again, my best strategy is being unorthodox as opposed to doing what other people are doing !!

Great reply either way, good points, thanks for commenting.

I agree, planning with clear goals gives you direction to where your going. Because if you dont know where your going, how would you get there? Long and short term goals are good to use because you can see the actions you are taking to reach each goal and they can really start building upon each other and build momentum.

With that I agree that you have to have goals set to know what your even doing in business. Because the flip side to that coin is you could be spending alot more money then actually making money. Plus you need to create good business. (there is no such thing as get rich quick online)

But I also agree with rcritchett that I too work best when I just dont do what everyone else is doing and really start putting together crazier ideas to form a new business or find a new way to market my existing business.
