How to control my fear of failure?

I am not a newbie in this IM world. Just a little recap of my IM journey. I started with clickbank didn't get any success but strangely got success in selling those high ticket 2000$ product and that too happen in short period of time. But after that fear of failure has taken hold of me, I start expecting success every time I do something.

Whenever I tries to do something big a fear came "what if I fail and loose money, failure is not an option". So many times I don't even start because of fear of failure. This fear of failure has become reality of my life and I start getting tense even because of small failures. How do I cope with this fear?

    Hey Deen,
We are all born with two fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises, both very handy in survival during a primitive world.
The fear of failure actually does not exist!
If you feared snakes you would do every thing you could to avoid snakes.
Yet when people say the fear failure, their most common action and the one that you described is to actually guarantee failure 'you don't even start, so in essence you surround yourself with failing.
Mate this is not what i would do with snakes!
What you actually fear is the unknown, and funny thing is that from what you say you have already proven that you have a successful profile.

Not hear to be a srink, but hope this angel helps in some way

    Regards Rob

I totally understand your concerns, but like others have said, you have to start before you can succeed at anything. By not starting, you've failed already.

Now, I don't know your exact situation or what's at stake, but I bet things won't be as bad as you think even if you do fail. Ask yourself, "what's the worst that could happen?" Probably time and a little money wasted, but you'll always learn something and know how to improve the next time.

Above that, it's unlikely you even will fail when the past proves that you can do things and succeed at them!

This is going to seem unconventional at best and downright weird for some. What you need in your life is a big succes. But it doesn't necessarily have to be in business.

Consider doing something daring. Sky diving maybe or bungee Jumping. I know, you're probably thinking, those activities could kill me. That's true. But I believe that we die when it's our time so you could keel over while eating corn flakes.

Once you've gotten a big success under your belt you've proven to yourself that you are capable of big things. And it becomes easier to relate that big success to business.

You might say, "Geez, I jumped out of an airplane successfully. This little business venture sure ain't going to be the end of me." Doing this puts things into perspective.

I've done an informal study of people who have overcome life-threatening diseases. My interest came about because I myself have overcome one. And there is something common to virtually all of these people. For the most part they no longer worry about little things. Why? Because they have a much broader perspective on fear, worry, success, failure, etc. After looking death in the face none of the rest of it seems all that scary.

I'm not saying you need to face death in the literal sense. But do something big, with a bit of risk attached and your fears of business are likely to seem like pretty small stuff. Good luck.

The fear can simply be that you know you cannot afford to fail as it would cost you monetarily. If your situation doesn't allow such loss, then you have a valid reason to be afraid of failure.

Obviously, this means you should minimize your costs. Putting money in AdWords is risky and costly, but there are many other ways to advertise that cost nothing or next to nothing. You might need to just change your marketing plans to the more affordable ones.

Being afraid to fail is a self-fulfilling prophesy, because by not starting, you have failed. So would you rather "try" and then fail? Or would you rather just not try and lose any possibility of succeeding?

If money is not the issue here, then you need to figure out why failing would be a problem for you. Often, it's directly linked to low self confidence. Maybe you're afraid to lose because it would mean you are a failure - that you don't have what it takes. In which case, be realistic. What are your skills and talents? Where can you acquire them so that you feel more confident in the work you have to do?

One thing's for certain. You need to change your negative thinking. You say you expect to succeed every time, but perhaps you really only "think" you do. Underneath, you might just find that you have this negative self-talk going on behind it all. You "say" you expect to succeed, but your inner voice is saying, "...but you probably won't."

Just accept the fact that you might not succeed. Then, if you don't succeed, you can figure out why and fix it. But at least you would have tried.

      Sylvia

As you said Failure is not an Option, but It can be a good experience to be a more complete person. If you experience failure and you recover with it? you will not be afraid in anything that comes along your way. It's just part of our life.
It's not bad to have fear, but the bad thing is if you will let your fear overcome you.

Change your story, you dont strangely have success.

You are a person that has success all the time from now on.

Write as many things as you can everyday of the things that went well for you. From being alive to breathing. This will change your subconscious attention towards the positive in your life.

Let go the root cause of this fear, why is this fear in you in the first place, when was the first time that this fear struck you. Track that down, and let go of the emotion of that first time that it happened, cause the only two fears we have installed in this life is the fear of falling, and the fear of sound. The rest of the fears are LEARNED, so learn how to UNlearn this fear.

    Hope this helps

Just remember how you don't want a mediocre life. Its good that you're taking risks. You could be a bagger at Publix with no fear of failing. Also, its important to let go of your past failures, don't bring them with you to new ventures.

Here's my 3-step process to overcome fear of failure:

Step 1: Accept That Nobody's Perfect.

We might have a lot of perfectionists in this world, but we don't have a single perfect person. Once you realize that, you'll slowly be able to let go of the notion that everything must come out exactly right.

Because believe it or not, your fear of failure is only doing you more harm than good. Instead of doing a certain project, for instance, you end up not taking action because you're too tense or afraid of screwing everything up.

Remember that even the most successful and accomplished people find themselves facing failure at one point or another. So just do your best; but do something. Any action is better than no action at all.

Step 2: Learn From Your Mistakes.

If you want to learn how to overcome fear of failure, you'll have to see every situation as a way for you to learn from your mistakes. Turn your situation into something positive.

In a way, this teaches you that failure is but a minor setback. Learning from your mistakes only allows you to become an even better success than you would have been had you not learned anything new.

    Step 3: Prepare a Plan B.

If the idea of failing still gives you a nervous breakdown, consider making a plan B all the time. In fact, why stop at that? Prepare other alternatives so that you'll be more secure.

Knowing that you have at least three other back-ups gives you a boost of confidence like nothing else. As you grow more accustomed to the feeling of not really knowing how something is going to turn out, you'll also learn how to overcome the fear of failure in no time.

It's time for you to develop positive thought habits. As Within, So Without; As Above, So Below" -- Stop entertaining failure thoughts and start entertaining success thinking.

Look online for groups of people that are studying Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" (free tele-classes) or Bob Proctor's "Born Rich." I found two great free tele-classes last year through doing a search in LinkedIn discussion groups. Just search either of those two books. You're in the perfect place right now to change your thinking and program your subconscious for success, rather than failure. You're leading yourself to success right now by choosing to participate in Warrior Forum, which is a most positive environment I have found, w/ great, sharing positive thinkers.

But do more than positive thinking >> use the principle of Autosuggestion, as written about by Napoleon Hill. Autosuggestion, according to Hill, is "the medium for influencing the subconscious mind and is the agency of communication between the part of the mind where conscious thought takes place, and the part of the mind that is the SEAT OF ACTION FOR THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.

Best wishes for prosperity and great success! Go for it!! Do it now!!

Fear can be a good thing. We all want to be courageous. I love Eddie Rickenbacker's statement:

“Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared.”

We should court courage and fear will be its slave. Finally, I totally love what CS Lewis said about courage:

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point."

Look your fear in the eyes, take courage, and slam dunk it!

Wake up and say something positive about yourself in the mirror.

Keep a notebook and write at least 3 things you are thankful for every day.

Write a mini goal list - take baby steps and congratulate yourself for accomplishing each step. The step doesn't have to be a financial goal - maybe one step can be write an article. Then move on to the next baby step. Maybe the next one is something totally unrelated - like get in bed by 10PM. Whatever you can think of - that you can accomplish.

    Mentor or help someone else.

Write it all down and start accomplishing.

The power of the mind is amazing - you can change how you look at yourself and your business.

It's very similar to sales - where we want to get a customer in the mood to say YES. We ask questions that can only have a positive answer.....by the end - YES is just natural... and so is your success.

Hmmm.... after reading the other replies, which are certainly good, I guess I am going to be the odd ball here.

Having read a lot of self-help books and such once upon a time I used to take the approach of going for the tiny success. It is important for sure. It really can help you to move on to a bigger success. If you act quickly enough. However, if you bask in the success you can also find yourself doing... nothing.

Also, did the whole positive reinforcement thing. I think there is value in it. I really do.

Anyway, the real turning point for me was to simply look at it a different way. Who cares really?! I changed my mindset and actually started doing things expecting fully that I had a great chance to fail. But again... so what?

You see the real turning point, for me at least, was to just to face that fear. Not try to cover it with positive mumbo jumbo (don't take that the wrong way I do believe in thinking positive) but instead to just face it, do and fail.

So, my advice is to simply start failing as often as you can. You see once you start failing on a regular basis... well, first that means you are trying things on a regular basis. If you are failing a lot then you are trying a lot. Second, when you fail a lot you'll get used to the failing and just accept it as a natural part of the process. A natural part of life. You develop an immunity to fear of failure. Providing you don't sit around beating yourself up over the failure. Just look at it. Find the lesson. Learn how to improve then give yourself the opportunity to fail again... which also gives you the opportunity to succeed. And really I now see both as a success. The so called failure gives us feedback. The success gives us feedback.

Failures provide us with good experience. Sure, it might not be the kind of experience we were looking for. But knowing what not to do is every bit as important as knowing what to do. And you learn what not to do by trying and failing. Again, I don't really see it as failing the way most people read that word. Just see it as feedback. You try something. It does not produce the result you want. Why is that? It is all just data. Process it. Improve.

Obviously, I am talking about in terms of taking positive action here. I am not advising you to do something crazy like run across a major interstate or bungee jump without the cord. I mean assess the risks. Determine what is the worst thing that can happen. If the risk is within reason and the reward is worth that risk then I go for it.

I love your suggestion of failing often. Actually I am trying to do this exercise of failing but just one failure put me so much down that I found it very difficult to start again. I know not Good at all. The main problem is my negative thinking which I am trying to change. These negative thoughts are the real reason why I am so afraid of failure. I guess law of attraction is working right now for me although in a negative way.

Everyone fails - it's part of the learning process. I agree with Ruth - what is the worst thing that could happen? Really think that through. I read somewhere (Melody Beattie, I think) - the only thing that's the end of the world is the end of the world.

There are very few people who are successful in all facets of life. I don't believe they exist.

Don't beat up yourself, if and when you're still battling with some challenges. I take failure as integral to life. Anyone who tells you she is successful in everything is a liar or is myopic.

We fail, we win every day. Celebrate everything. Learn from the failures, if you're able to draw lessons from each, and you apply same, is that not better than...

It's all dynamic. Draw inspiration from movies and books, accounts of those who battled with failure and depression.

Yeah, you will not overcome your fear of failure by reading books or going to a therapist. The best suggestion is to try small new things in your every day life - try a new hobby, take up a sport you like, try a new restaurant, call up someone you want to be friends with.

In everything you do, you will likely fail at first but after your second, tenth, hundredth attempt you will succeed. In many things you will quit before you succeed but that's okay, if that task or goal is not going to make you happy.

I bet you fell down hundreds and thousands of times before you learned how to walk as a baby. You had NO fear back then, it's time you exercise your mind to regain that mindset that including a lack of fear.

In other words, don't try to think your problems away - take action and build on small successes until you are ready to attempt the scary problems.

Fear is an emotion. The only way you can "get rid of" any undesired emotion is to completely embrace it. What you do not own (in this case, your fear) owns you.

However, by resisting it/trying to get rid of it, you're trying to disown it even further. This creates more fear, because you're now owned even more by the fear.

When you fully and completely own your fear - fully feeling every bit of it, you end up owning the fear. And it will no longer be an issue.

This process is easier said than done, and there are a lot of methods out there that teach it. But if you just can't get past this issue, it might be worth looking into.

When you fully and completely own your fear - fully feeling every bit of it, you end up owning the fear. And it will no longer be an issue.

This process is easier said than done, and there are a lot of methods out there that teach it. But if you just can't get past this issue, it might be worth looking into.
Eliminating fears is actually my area of expertise, and what gr8tocre8 says is right on!

This is what really worked for me better than any of the other methods described above namely because it address the emotions directly.

The key is to allow yourself to feel it (i.e. don't resist) and then to let it go. Interestingly, allowing yourself to feel the fear will diminish the fear over time. Like if you literally just watch the fear for 20 minutes, those 20 minutes may feel like an eternity, but it will decrease as long as you just sit and watch it without judgment.

Another thing you can do is use EFT (but again do not resist the emotion). Go to youtube and search for EFT and you'll see demonstrations in which you can clear the fear away.

Or apply the quick breathing technique that I posted on this forum post:

      http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...your-fear.html

Several warriors got positive results with it. Perhaps it can help.

The amazing thing is once the fear is completely gone, you will literally feel free to make mistakes as if it didn't matter. This happens time and time again with my clients.

Guys I just want to say I would not like to fail, and I am kind of scared of failure. But every single time I start a new venture and think about the possibility of failure, I simply tell myself: "Get it out of your head and deal with it when you actually fail." It sounds simple but it works for me. Most importantly, you don't want to grow old without following your instincts. You will regret it down the road.

Failure is like taking off a band aid. You can : a. leave it on and let it rot on your skin. b. pull it off a millimeter at a time and suffer with each tug or c. Rip that sucker off and get back outside to play!

Fail faster. If it fails, learn something from it and keep going.

    Everyone fails at some point.

Most famous people had epic failures before their fame. The people you never hear about are the ones who stopped at failure.

You're just one failure away from being the next big thing.

This is what I tell myself since I suffer from that same fear, my fear leads me to procrastinate, and I should be doing work right now instead of typing this. Back to photoshop for me.

There are so many wonderful replies in this thread. I've received much from reading through them, so thank you for asking the question.

      Here's my reply -

You are worthy of so much goodness in life. Sometimes a storm happens and things don't go the way we intend or desire. But know that it is in you to be resilient. I believe that it is Osho that said, "Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway." The life you have come here to live has never been lived by anyone before. You are breaking new ground, forging a new path. You are shifting the paradigms of how abundance, prosperity and success are created.

With the shifts that are taking place in the economy - many of us are creating a new relationship with success and money. You are too. It is through trial and error that you will connect with what will work for you. Trust your inner guidance. Make sure you are embarking upon projects and adventures that inspire you and that you love.

It's simply not possible for you to fail. Every twist and turn of your journey helps get you to your ultimate destination.

You are so much wiser than you know. You have more courage than you can imagine. You have many blessings coming your way. Your job is to say yes to them.

      You can trust yourself...

Feeling Fearful : Action cures Fear. Indecision, Postponement, fertilize fear. Quit acting like a drowning man. Let people around you know that you are still alive. Isolate your Fear -> then take Action!

If it helps, I failed more than 7-times in trying to figure out how to
make money with direct mail marketing before a light bulb went off
    in my head.

Do you have any idea how much EACH failure cost me? Appx. $500
    -$700 each time.

Most people would have given up on it after the FIRST. And, if not
the first surely after a SECOND...but like a mad man I kept going.

Had I not, I would not be in the fortunate position I'm in now...and
I would be looking back WISHING I had kept going.

So you have to ask yourself...

Will I regret most NOT doing what I fear?...

or facing the crumbling reality of my regrets?

When you review your life, you will either cry tears of joy, or tears
of pain -- and one will outweigh the other.

    Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20.

Do keep in mind you only get ONE shot. You can't go back in time
    and "try a different angle".

If these fears ARE stopping you, you will see the bigger picture in
due time...and only then you will see, "...Damn. Losing a few bucks
5-10-15-20 years ago means absolutely NOTHING to me now. In
fact, I think I spent it on a brand new TV...In hindsight, LOSING
the money means NOTHING TO ME compared to the LIFESTYLE I
could have had for myself and my family! *cries*"

Tough luck. Maybe you'll get another shot in the next life. But why
    wait?

The decision is yours. Statistically, you'll NEVER get over this fear,
and I should be telling you to play it safe...but no one who ever struck
a homerun sat in the stands...the "played the game".

    It's your choice.

When you fail at something, it leaves a gentle reminder etched in your mind so that next time you face a similar challenge you are veered subconsciously to it.

Each and every failure in your life bears some good, let me explain..

Think of it as pouring juice into a colander, you leave the bad stuff in the colander and drink the fresh juice, there is always some juice in the glass. Always something to be learned from each and every failure. Look hard enough and you will see it!

If we don't fail we don't grow, if you can look up, you can get up! The most successful people in business have failed much more than Mr average, that's what makes them great!

We all know great sportsman that don't know how to win. They are the best on the day but just can't cross the finishing line. These people have a fear of success not failure.

I think travlinguys advice is spot on, you need to learn how to succeed not how to conquer failure.

Fear of Failure is horrible than the Failure itself!

Face your fear to become stronger.
Getting Busy taking ACTION, Fear is gone!
Realize that your Fear is just an illusion! Get yourself out of that!

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
