Does Anyone Brainstorm Anymore?

Does anyone brainstorm anymore? You used to hear about it more in days gone by. But it seems to sink under most people's radar, books and programs lately.

It's an age old technique for coming up with unique ideas and solutions to problems. But you seldom hear about it anymore.

It's a shame most public schools don't teach it. In my opinion it should be a required course like math, science and history.

Many fortune 500 companies use it, the military and of course advertising and marketing agencies. But for some reason today's top self improvement books generally ignore it.

Does anyone consider brainstorming important anymore or are we depending on computers to give us all the ideas our brains used to do? If so, does that trouble you?

You bring up a great subject! Getting together with a friend and brainstorming is one of the most enjoyable things I do. You NEVER end anywhere close to where you start!

And when I don't have a friend near, I do what I call spiritual brainstorming...since connecting with the Higher Power, whose "thoughts are not our thoughts" is the greatest mental stimulation of all. At least for me.....

You can't innovate unless you brainstorm. And if you can't innovate, you will never be a true leader.

Great post - absolutely - but we have to recognise that often now people simply jump on the back of other people's ideas.

Brainstorming is harder in the IM world because of fear - yet in reality there is so much room to work in it really shouldn't be a problem.

I would say that there are those who still do, and you can tell who by looking at their achievements

I'd like to say that I am in the same boat as you, but I don't advocate that unless you own the boat yourself.

I have discovered many exciting things by brainstorming. I produce most of my profitable keywords this way rather than relying on the famous keyword tools out there, just by putting yourself in other people's shoes, it's amazing what you can achieve.

I see brainstorming as "organized daydreaming", and mean that in the best of ways! It's a productive type of imagination and should definitely be the vehicle for any IM strategy.

Brainstorming is vital to the life of an entrepreneur. Brainstorming with your friends or other IMers is an excellent way to get your juices flowing. It's motivating! It gets you charged up to start something new or try a new angle on something old. It renews your excitement.
      Brainstorming is inspiring.....

Yes - To this day I still brainstorm - but Its not always like I sit down for 30 minutes and get it done.
Ideas flow to me all day, and when they do, I note them down on my iPhone.

I still do MINDMAPS for my business - its great for keeping an overview of the different functions and also helps you see what tasks are minor and which are crucial.

Absolutely! My husband & I do it all the time. We call it the "What If" game.

"What If" works best when facing a particular problem or challenge. The rules are to think as far out of the box as possible - and NO critiques or eye-rolling allowed. One person starts, "What if we..." and the other finishes with an idea. It's really fun, and it's amazing the innovation that's discovered. We actually ended up selling & re-building our home from the What If game, so be careful!

Our other brainstorming technique is list-building, and it's useful when creative options are needed. For example, when joining an MLM company, we needed ideas to create leads. We could only think of a dozen, so we set our list goal twice that number.

Once the obvious ideas are out of the way, the right brain kicks in, and some good, creative stuff happens. Sometimes I even can write an article from what comes out of our brainstorming sessions.

I do sometimes brainstorm.. some days no umbrella is needed, other days a virtual torrent of ideas. But one has to differentiate between brainstorming and daydreaming as the line can become uncomfortably thin.

Brainstorming need not be as structured as most people assume. What I mean is that in the typical brainstorming session several people sit around a table and throw ideas around with the intent of creating something greater.

I use it in a quite different manner. As I have conversations with others throughout the day, I occasionally throw a curve into the conversation to see how people react, and what they respond with. This, in turn causes my thoughts to diverge from a potentially planned course of action. All the while, I make notes of anything that seems notable. Usually this is a word or two that describes a concept or idea. Later, I review these notes and often find they help to bring up other ideas.

Though it follows a somewhat disjointed process, it still provides many of the same benefits of the more conventional methods of brainstorming.

Another thing I like to do is walk, without a purpose or destination, and just let my mind wander. As new ideas pass by, I make brief notes and continue on. I keep a small supply of unlined 3x5 index cards and a pen in my shirt pocket, so always have something with me to make a quick note without significantly affecting my train of thought.

Great point here raised by Rick. It's so true. You can't tell people how to brainstorm - it's definitely an individual thing.

Telling people how to brainstorm is like sitting them down, slapping them and then demanding them for an idea right then and there! :p

Whether you do it in the most unstructured way by "pen and paper" or in a more structured fashion - it doesn't matter. It's what works for you.

Great post the Niche Man - brainstorming can bring out some ideas that even your craziest dreams couldn't bring out.

Brainstorming is alive and well even in this day and age. The high-tech ideas derive for the most part, by one or more individuals braining storming and coming with a feasible idea that translated into an end-product of the IPAD, Iphone, Microsoft, facebook, etc.

As for me, I am braining storming on ideas to about website operations from social networking to forums. At present I have about ten websites that I am brainstorming over in the age of facebook, twitter that appears to cancel out smaller of a similar abstract and content base. I am finding it hard at the moment break into a compatible markets. Thus, brainstorming is alive and well

alive and well indeed.. ..great thread!

as for me, i've been jotting notes on paper and mostly doing rough 'mindmaps'. I might take pics of those jotted mindmaps w my iphone and upload them to evernote<-- also a good tool i like for saving passing thoughts and ideas/articles etc.. it will sync with my iphone and pc via online account.

i did some research on different mind mapping software. mindjet mindmanager was supposed to be one with the most features- but i found it to be almost like project management software- not very intuitive..

--> my favorite now is Prezi.com- a really great way to do nice looking presentations as well- and very intuitive.

Brainstorming is the bulk of what I do before I bring a new product to the market. Collaborating with others and sharing ideas is a crucial part of the business world and we would be at a loss If no one did it anymore.

The sad part is, that most people don't know how to brainstorm effectively. While there are no definitive methods that you should use, there are some examples that are used very widely in the corporate world. Do what brings out your creativity the best.

As what has been said that two heads are better than one. Brainstorming is not only useful in identifying a wide range of ideas and solutions to problems but also in facilitating group cohesiveness and ownership of ideas. Brainstorming allows to generate many ideas in a relatively short time and requires few material resources.

Brainstorming is great. Although it may seem that many companies don't brainstorm anymore I believe the way people have brainstormed has changed.

Instead of a white board or notepad, many people use their computers and tools like google docs to brain storm via collecting and sharing pictures, articles etc.

In an age where information is constantly streaming brainstorming is more weeding out what information is important and whats not.
