Listening To The Voices In Your Head

No, I'm not talking about becoming the crazy cat lady. This is serious.

I want to share something that happened to me recently. It illustrates very profoundly that what you think may not always be of your own origin.

Do you have any idea how many times you have escaped disaster without even knowing it? Of course not... read on...

I was driving home, after dark, on a very rainy day. Between the darkness and water droplets on the windshield, visibility was extremely poor. I had just finished a hard workout and I was, as I often do when I'm tired, driving rather "lazily".

Traveling at the speed limit, of 55 MPH, about 2 miles from home, I began to round a large left hand curve. As I am sometimes prone to do, I drifted past the lines to the outside of the curve, barely on the pavement, using the entire shoulder.

Suddenly, the thought came into my head, "What if someone were walking on this shoulder right now?", so I pulled the wheel a bit to the left to correct my course. No sooner did my car ease back into the proper lane...

WHOOSH!

I buzzed past a man walking on foot toward me, narrowly missing him. I actually cried out, I was so shocked.

This is a road I have traveled many, many times and have only less than a few times seen someone walking along. Never at night, never never in the rain.

To the best of my recollection I have never once thought, "what if someone would be walking here?" before while I was driving. Not once.

Where did the question come from? You tell me.

What if I had ignored the thought? I might have to live with the guilt of blood the rest of my life.

Did that man know how close he was to death? I strongly doubt it.

Someone intervened for the pedestrian and for me. For that I am very grateful. Every day we live we are undoubtedly the recipient of unknown mercy.

I, for one, will forever listen more closely to the voices in my head when they come urging caution or concern.

Awesome story - shows us how we are ALWAYS being guided. You experienced it first-hand

It didn't say: "WATCH OUT!!" or "OMG, ATTENTION"
It was simply a contemplated suggestion that you followed to allow life to flourish.

We always receive what we want through the crack of least resistance & when your door is wide open you are part of miraculous events like this one Great to keep in mind

Great story, it shows that you should always trust your gut- and maybe we're operating on a higher level then we understand... spooky...

While I agree that we likely are operating on influences and perceptions that we don't understand, I would find it highly dangerous to go so far as to say, "always trust your gut". That's why I tempered it with "when they come urging caution or concern.", that's a safe stance.

Listening to caution could cost you potential money or opportunity, but it's relatively safe. Not listening to caution can cost lives and real money.

I'm fascinated and shocked by this occurrence, and It's opening up a whole new way for me to perceive the circumstances around me.

My entire week actually is starting to appear more and more like the events are beings scripted. It's very strange and very enjoyable at the same time.

I agree with you 100% that "always" probably wasn't my best choice of words...

I have this feeling that it was a higher power, most probably God warning you in advance and you obeyed immediately and saved a life.

What a wonderful experience! You remind me of something that I can lose sight of so easily as a result of day-to-day living.

When the chatter of the mind is stilled, we are closer to what is referred to as being "in the gap" or "in the now" by some authors/thinkers. This does not entail that we are then unaware- quite the contrary! Think of the Zen ideal here- stillness but with absolute awareness.

The kind of "knowledge" or "voices" that you experienced is always there, talking to us, guiding us and providing insight from a deeper source. It's just that the mind is mostly so busy chattering, analyzing and commenting that we miss it entirely. These "voices" or "thoughts" or sudden knowledge is extremely subtle and can be missed quite easily.

Trick is to be aware of it, hold yourself in a state conducive to being aware of it and also making space for it. It can be quite an amazing experience when you "hit the sweet spot" and stay tuned in to these for a time, as you seem to be experiencing. Although it would seem almost counter-intuitive, we also lose that connection by concentrating too hard on it! A good analogy I once read is like being aware of an image in the periphery of your field of vision- you are fully aware of it, yet you don't focus on it. (If you did- you'd lose the image!)

    Wonderful experience indeed!

    Stay in the groove!

    Best wishes,

    Piero

sometimes bad things happen, we can't stop it, but there is something we should keep in mind that drving fast leads to accident all the time. You are lucky.

Over the years, I have had several instances where listening to the voices has made a huge difference in the outcome of the situation at hand. I have learned (as have you) that it is important to trust higher guidance and listen to those voices. The few times I have not listened, bad things happened, and though they did not have the potential consequences you described, they were definitely lessons I needed to learn.

In at least three instances I can still remember, listening to the inner voice literally saved my life, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were others as well. Also, in a number of occasions, they kept things from getting out of hand, or kept significantly reduced the impact of the environment on my and my family.

Yes, though it sounds like crazy talk, I DO listen to the voices in my head. Strangely enough, I seem to be able to tell the difference between the normal internal chatter of the brain and my internal processes and that of "the voice". There is some undescribable, indefinable quality to it that demands attention, though not like a shout or command. More like a quiet, calm voice in the storm that causes me to question my (potentially rash) actions. Also, sometimes I have seen pictures that have given me pause in the same way the voice has, also protecting me from undesirable outcomes.

We are not alone. I don't care what you call it, but the guidance I have received has helped my life in immeasurable ways.

You can't discount the fact either that we are all linked in ways that we don't fully understand. I could tell you several stories that you'd just shake your head at in complete surprise. These are the times when we are just in awe of the higher plane of our connections.

One of the most interesting ones I will never forget was at a Tony Robbins seminar. Tony does that thing where you imagine and event and actually get in the posture, feeling and moment. You then mimmick that persons posture. My friend made one adjustment to my posture to make me look like the guy I was immitating. All I remember was getting a super computer like flash from this guy's mind where I described in detail the event I was witnessing in such detail that it blew us both away. It was like I read it straight from the core of his mind. What an amazing experience that was.

We all hear voices in our heads. Most of us assume it is our thought processes, though sometimes I really wonder how much is ourselves, and how much comes from elsewhere. I suppose the trick is to separate the elsewhere from ourselves, then determine if elsewhere is in our best interests. Where it is, it probably comes from divine guidance, the universal mind, god or who/what you ask for daily help in this world.

The scary times are when the first voice you hear is "I wonder what would happen if I tried to stop that fan with my hand," and the voice of reason only says "that might not be a really good idea." It's time like these that makes you certain you have the power of independent action, but wonder if you have the innate instinct of self preservation that we once were born with... (and wondering if a few too many beers might mask that voice of reason.)
