Listening To The Voices In Your Head
I want to share something that happened to me recently. It illustrates very profoundly that what you think may not always be of your own origin.
Do you have any idea how many times you have escaped disaster without even knowing it? Of course not... read on...
I was driving home, after dark, on a very rainy day. Between the darkness and water droplets on the windshield, visibility was extremely poor. I had just finished a hard workout and I was, as I often do when I'm tired, driving rather "lazily".
Traveling at the speed limit, of 55 MPH, about 2 miles from home, I began to round a large left hand curve. As I am sometimes prone to do, I drifted past the lines to the outside of the curve, barely on the pavement, using the entire shoulder.
Suddenly, the thought came into my head, "What if someone were walking on this shoulder right now?", so I pulled the wheel a bit to the left to correct my course. No sooner did my car ease back into the proper lane...
WHOOSH!
I buzzed past a man walking on foot toward me, narrowly missing him. I actually cried out, I was so shocked.
This is a road I have traveled many, many times and have only less than a few times seen someone walking along. Never at night, never never in the rain.
To the best of my recollection I have never once thought, "what if someone would be walking here?" before while I was driving. Not once.
Where did the question come from? You tell me.
What if I had ignored the thought? I might have to live with the guilt of blood the rest of my life.
Did that man know how close he was to death? I strongly doubt it.
Someone intervened for the pedestrian and for me. For that I am very grateful. Every day we live we are undoubtedly the recipient of unknown mercy.
I, for one, will forever listen more closely to the voices in my head when they come urging caution or concern.
