What is the best SINGLE book that have influenced your life?

Hi,

As the title says, what's the best book (just one) that has influenced your life?

Not an emotional response, but a real, material response that made you change things ?

For me, without any doubt: "Those Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin

I have a LOT but the first one in a specific series has changed my outlook.
It is called Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...and it's all Small Stuff.
The series is by Richard Carlson who sadly passed away a few years ago.

The simple premise is to turn mountains into molehills so you can overcome them.

I hate to be cliche, but honestly the Bible is the most influential. It's in the truth of what I learn every time I read it, as well as practicing what it says to power my Spirit that keeps my commitment to what is right as well as my inspiration to succeed strong.

My mission is not to achieve success. My mission isn't to make a lot of money. My mission isn't to be wealthy. My mission IS to reach out and touch other's lives in the most positive way I know how. Honestly I think it is stupid how we need money to survive, and that the systems in place are corrupt and make no sense. God's way is the best hands down, but NO ONE in today's time applies the principles HE says to live by...

In general, people do their own thing and that is why it's so difficult to find a "destiny" out of your life. With God, everyone has a destiny, and that is loving one another and doing what it takes to spread that love indefinitely. I don't know why people would deny that, love is such a wonderful thing.

My favorite book was Unleash the Power Within by Anthony Robbins.

It really set me thinking and was what introduced me to NLP.

I also credit it with teaching me the importance of self-improvement. The information about states, mindsets, setting of goals etc was priceless.

Anthony Robbins is a genius in that field. I too have benefited greatly from that book as well as his Mastery of Influence series he created. Truly life changing information he teaches!

I'm also a fan of Robbins. He teaches how to make quantum leaps in life, and he drills down, he reveals powerful specifics, not some vague conceptual stuff. I love the dude, and his story is an inspiration.

I'm a big Jay Abraham fan.

I would say, Stealth Marketing...even over his Mr X book. It shows his range of thinking. If you did everything in that book, you would probably be a millionaire.

Even the most basic thing he advocates...like capturing customer names, I wonder how many ebay sellers do that. Or remailing your customer list. I bet not 1 in 50 offline businesses do that. Jay has pounded home this idea of "simple things". You don't need to run out and find magic potions to fix your problems or make money.

    For me...

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.

I first read this book in 1996 but didn't understand the
material that well as it's a bit deep.

However, I re-read the book again in 1998 and as I'd
read a lot of books in between the first and second
read, it then made a lot more sense.

It's a book that will change your outlook and results
    if you apply the principles.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

It may be ridiculous, but I have to say Harry Potter. While my wife and I vaguely knew each other on Livejournal, what made us actually start talking was an email exchange about HP. That happened in the spring of 2002. We were married on 1/22/2004. I moved from GA to NY to be with her, and everything in my life has changed since then. I had been involved with an abusive person, and she gave me a place to run to when I finally got out. She has supported me (emotionally, physically) while my health deteriorated and my debt skyrocketed when I stopped being able to work.

I believe I would've gotten sick anywhere I lived, but I don't believe I would've otherwise found someone who has been willing to help me with so much. I'm 30 and my 89 year old grandmother gets around better than I do! Most people would not stick around for that.

So. Bit of a life story there, but I couldn't just leave it with, "Oh, Harry Potter, probably..."

Excluding religious texts, I'd say Rich Dad/Poor Dad. That book opened my mind to being an entrepeneur. It made me believe i could infact be rich, and me realise why i wanted to work only for me to start with...

    Hi

It's quite tricky to pick one, but I will
go with, "Frogs into Princes" by Richard
    Bandler & John Grinder.

It was one of the first NLP books I read
that made me think, "WOW! It is possible
to re-program my mind quickly and easily
    without all the psycho-babble BS!"

How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie
was the book that had the most impact, as it was the pivot point for my life, and set the direction of it.

But for now the "Book" would be Tony Robbins Cds (eg Get the Edge), though if you had to be a book then lets go with Unleash the Giant within.

  • Hi all,

My most influential book is "The Power" by Rhonda Byrne( The author of "The Secret"). This book has helped me by realizing that there is only force in the universe. That is Love. Any problems we experience is a result of not giving enough Love. Give Love and you receive Love. Life is so simple!!!! I would encourage you all to read it. It has had an immeasurable influence on my life.

The most influential book for me was the Bible. I am no longer a Christian but the wisdom extracted is the same as most respected religious texts: Do unto others, be kind, don't lie, don't cheat, don't steal, don't worship money, etc. They are solid, life-changing principles that are profound.

I would have to say it is several for me....starting with "Do You" by Russell Simmons and "The Pursuit of Happiness" later made into a movie with Will Smith........these were grounding factors for me and later....I continue with others but these were very impressionable before the Secret...cause one has to first Change their mindset!

Mine would be Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". Nope, it's not just about the money. His book started my personal development journey. It opened my mind to possibilities and challenged my way of thinking. It was the first 'mind set' book I've ever read, and since then, I've been following the Rich Dad series.

Robert also advocates continuous growth and learning. After reading his book, I've began 'seeing' other great books on how to develop yourself such as Napoleon Hills 'Think and Grow Rich', Rhonda Byrne's 'The Secret', Wallace Wattles 'The Science of getting Rich', Etc... I have also listened to Earl Nightingale's recordings, among them "Lead the Field" and "The Strangest Secret".

I wouldn't have thought of reading all of these other books if I haven't encountered the Rich Dad book. That was the eye-opener for me.

I am resolved to follow his principles , although not in the brick and mortar business world, but in the boundless online world

    Cheers,
    Gie

Kind of ironic really, I've never been a big fan of reading books...yet 2 worthy mentions Og Mandino's "The World's Greatest Salessman, and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill were truly remarkable.

I guess that leaves...Harry Potter books - Oh, and "The Laws of Success in 16 Lessons" by Napoleon Hill which I believe was written in 1928, prior to TGR.
