I hope this doesn't sound familar

One evening a man is walking down the street when he hears a dog whining, it's not loud but enough to be annoying, it becomes increasing louder as he approaches a home with a large front porch. He sees an elderly man sitting in a rocking chair enjoying the evening and at his feet is an old hound dog crying in obvious discomfort. He walks up to the steps of the house and ask the gentleman "what's the matter with your dog" to which he responds "the dog is lying on a nail that is sticking up on the porch". The walker says "why doesn't he get up" and the dog owner says "it must not be painful enough yet". Unfortunately that is how far too many of us live our lives. The pain of financial, relationship or health discord is enough to invoke complaining or worse yet quiet suffering and a hope that things will get better by themselves, but not enough pain to get us unstuck. The truth is, we can use the same energy to create the life we have always wanted. We have the ability to get up off the nail, but we learn to accept our lives as they are and choose to endure the pain of not living our lives to the fullest. So my question to you is when will you decide to get up and get a hammer and put that nail where it belongs?

To Your Success,
Mike:rolleyes:

Mike, thanks for the reminder. It's so easy to get into a rut and not realize that we can change things for the better. I like this story a lot. It's very similar to the story about the frog placed in water that is slowing brought to boiling point. When I reflect on some things in my life, I wonder why didn't I change that sooner? The answer most often is, because I let myself get comfortable with the situation.

Thanks for the comments, I have found it amazing what a human can and will endure, yet if they simply redirected the same energy that is used for survival to using it to thrive their lives would improve instantly.

I always believed in the ideology that we must never leave a job for tomorrow when we can have it done today. This story certainly contains the same idea. It may be a bit difficult in the initial period but the sense of satisfaction which we'll have after doing it will pay for it. At least we must make a start...

very nice story. The message of the story is not to leave the work for tomorrow when you have it today.

    All too familiar...

With introspection, I would imagine we all fall into the same trap as the dog. We essentially ignore the things that cause us pain, or whine about them without doing anything to fix the underlying problem.

Yep, looking around my day job environment, I find that most of the people there suffer from the same malady. Some to the point that it affects their daily life, but they don't make the changes needed to remove the pain.

    Why?

Mostly because we are afraid of the unknown, or change. Many feel trapped by society or financial environment, or even family ties.

Here on WF, you are much more likely to find individuals that are at least trying to change their lives, mostly through IM efforts. However, many just add another frustration or pain to their daily lives because they don't commit to the time and effort it takes to really succeed.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm taking your post as a reminder to take note of all the things in my life and environment that are causing me pain, so I can make plans to methodically eliminate them.

Very nice! Its so true. People (myself included) often spend more energy complaining or enduring something than they would fixing the issue!

Starting today spend 10 minutes thinking about what your "nail" is, then take out a piece of paper or open a blank page in word and at the top of the page write "what action can I take today to begin to change this" then just start writing, don't censor or judge. When you have run out of things to write number the ideas then get to work doing one thing per day and you will be amazed at how quickly your "nail" goes away.
      To your success,

When I feel like I'm limited in resources and abilities, I think about how many opportunities are out there. The world is huge, and the Internet is massive; surely, there is something I can do. Now the ball is back in my court.

Often, it's our thoughts that keep us back.

I am just like the dog most of the times, I would whine and tell myself....why prolong the agony...but then again there are so many things to consider along the way before coming up with a decision....just like in relationships.

That's right, we all wait for the worst to happen and then take action, when things are out of control.
