Love Yourself Before Anyone Else

I wanted to open this topic because it is one the most important steps to happiness. Some people may call it selfish, well I say forget about that and be selfish! How can you give love to anyone or anything else if you first do not give it to yourself?

How can you give love to yourself?
The first thing that must be identified is what you appreciate. After all what is the "you" other then the ego speaking to you on a subconscious level.

By identifying what you appreciate you are connecting to the "who you really are."

By practicing appreciation one can accurately gauge what they love and can in return give those things to themselves and practice the "art of self love."

It is very important to put yourself first because no one else will.

I can guarantee that if you love yourself, everyone else will too!

I wish you happiness, health and prosperity!

Any positive ideas on how to further self love is always welcome and appreciated
#love

I think self-love comes natural to most people, you can see it being displayed, even by very young children. I think it's basic. When I think of great-men, however, it is those who have transcended this focus on the self, that I admire a lot.

I used to be intensely focused on my self (years ago). I like to think I've matured:-) The truth is, now, I derive more joy from focusing on others. Self-love is nice...but, it can easily morph into selfishness...and that's why a lot of our relationships are strained.

At a level of appreciation, focusing on others is a more practical choice. If we can truly commit to the needs/wants of others...what we need will naturally stream back to us. It's a powerful and inflexible law. It's hewn into the structure of life.

Think about it: Who would you naturally want to do stuff for, or even spend time with? The person who focuses on others or the one who thinks she is the centre of the universe?

I agree to a degree... this is a very fine line that you need to walk. I think like a lot of people have said on here that you need to love yourself before you can love other people. Same thing with giving, you need to give to yourself before you can give to others. How can you teach other people to do something that you haven't done?

I think it is very important to at least like yourself. If you don't, how can you possibly help others? You need to believe you can help others and that you can do good things for others than yourself. If you don't like yourself and are too self-critical, it's hard to get anywhere with those intentions.

Loving yourself as a form of acceptance of who you are will draw people to you. Self-adoration and thinking your God's gift to mankind will eventually turn people away.

    Interesting and thoughtful post.

      Great topic.
Lack of Self-Love only comes when we look at ourselves through the eyes of other people - filter who we are through the perception of someone else with other ideals, other desires, other preferences...and not being able to live up to them. Well, who ever could??

I notice that even I want other people to live up to the ideal that I have created...but I notice that I can't except that from anyone else - I have to be in alignment with my own dream and let everyone else off the hook - and what happens then is that those people that cannot live up to my dream gravitate out of my life and those that can vibrate in. It's wonderful how it works!

That's true Love of Self - when we can be who we are and let others be who they are - moving forward with our vision, knowing that that which loves us is also that which loves them.

This is very true. What really opened my eyes to this topic was the following:
(Self-help Gurus Bryan Tracy, Dr Wayne Dyer and Nathaniel Branden teach this)

You can not love somebody more than yourself.

If you do not love yourself, you can´t love others.

Others can´t love you more than you love yourself.
Which means if you hate yourself you can´t feel loved by others and if they do love you, you will drive them away unconsciously.

Good post. Years ago Ayn Rand wrote a book titled, The Virtue Of Selfishness. The title sounds so awful but the message is profound. Basically, what it's about is, we need to take care of ourselves first.

But we need to do that in a way that does not forcibly interfere with others. That part is obviously the key. When we live like that, everyone around us as well as people only remotely within our sphere of influence benefits. Some would say the entire planet is better off, and I'd agree. Great stuff.

I am sorry, but I tend to disagree to this. This is rather a selfish apporoach. For me, other people close to me are the reasons for my happiness. I worry about them more, if they are happy, so am I

Yes. It is true that in today's world we need to love self first and then only will others follow it. We need to acknowledge self, maintain self respect , which would be followed by others. If we are not confident, happy, moved by ourself, how can we impress others outsiders.

A lot of people falsely think that loving yourself is egotistic and narcissistic, but that couldn't be farther from the truth...

People that don't love themselves are always looking for approval and more often than not end up being abused and taken advantage of because of their desperate need for love and approval. Once you start bathing in the energy of love, your world will start transforming itself, believe me...

Love is more than a concept, it's a very powerful form of energy. Some people believe that it's the very reason why we exist. Love, in my opinion, is the most powerful and meaningful experience you can have on this earth. Love changes your molecular structure and the structure of everything around you...

I agree with Chris. Love is the most powerful thing in this world. Without love we have nothing!!!!

Love is at the core of everything! Love others as much as you love yourself is the great commandment... So learn to love yourself well so you can love others just as much!!!

Yes, one should love him/herself so that whenever he/she practice it to some other people he/she knows exactly what it means.
