Is this the best Personal Development book ever?

If I'd read this book a few years ago, I could have saved myself the weeks of time and thousands of dollars I spent learning NLP, hypnosis and other aspects of personal development.

The book is Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. I'd heard about it a few times but I've only recently read it. Maybe I was put off by the title!

Though clearly I've learned a lot from the other sources, I feel Psycho-Cybernetics summarizes and explains the mental aspects of success better than anything else I've seen.

Everyone has their own take on a book. But I thought it was worth sharing some of the key points as I saw them.

1. Focus on a goal
  • We have an inbuilt mechanism that delivers to us what we think about; it can operate as an automatic success mechanism or as a failure mechanism - depending on where we put out attention
  • The mechanism can only work if we give it a clear direction by setting specific goals
2. Find your true self
  • Most of us under-rate ourselves
  • Our self-image controls what we accomplish and can impose artificial obstacles that prevent our success
  • Our self-image is based on what we imagine to be true rather than the facts
  • If you want to change your results, you have to change your self-image
3. Future success depends on imagination and practice
  • To achieve success in any field, we need to create it in our minds first by imagining success
  • It helps to make small achievements before we aim for big ones; practicing in comfortable environments builds the habit of success
  • If we decide to put more effort into imagining positive outcomes than we do into imagining negative ones, we increase our chances of success

Obviously some of these ideas appear in other books. But what I like about this one is that it seems to cover every angle, it is based on real case studies from Maltz's time as a medical doctor and surgeon working on people's physical scars, and it provides specific actions you can follow to apply his recommendations.

There's a lot more in the book and others have their own interpretations I'm sure.

Incidentally I recommend the updated version edited by Dan Kennedy.

I'd love to know what others think of this book or do you think another one is better?

To your success

Robert

Yeah. It's a good one. There are some other classics
like "think and grow rich" that lack the sensitive take
    on emotional scarring.

Maltz's stuff can help people really dig into what is holding
them back and systematically work to get better results
    from there.

You can't walk around telling people they have unworked-out
emotional stuff that is holding them back but you can
recommend they read the book. People have to discover
    for themselves.

  • Agreed Loren.

There are several other good books out there. Some of them are a bit theoretical and it's the depth of the psychology in this one that really appealed to me.

    Best regards

Robert, you've piqued my curiosity. I've checked the book on Amazon and the related videos on YouTube (especially the interview with Maxwell Maltz). I'd order this book right now, but I'm not sure that it would arrive at my house by Christmas -- and I'm moving house on the 29th!

Looks like I'll have to wait until the new year to get my hands on a copy, but I'm keen to do so. Thanks for the recommendation!

  • I'm sure you'll enjoy it John. And thanks for the tip about You Tube - I hadn't seen that interview.

It is indeed a great book Robert. I know it saved me from a rather desperate situation in the sixties. It is an absolutely 'must read' book. Maltz is one of my special heroes.

Incidentally, if you have'nt read any of the works of Alan Waitley, I'd recommend you do. He's in the Maltz class.

      Cheers!

My copy of Psycho-Cybernetics arrived in the mail this morning. I can't wait to read it and I'll report back on how I'm finding it.

(Since the house-move, I've unearthed my copy of Brian Tracy's "Maximum Achievement". It's just one of those books that you can open at any page, and it will just knock your socks off!)

  • Hi Alex - Thanks for the tip. Am I right in thinking he normally publishes as Denis Waitley? I think his name may actually be Denis Alan Waitley.

Descriptions I've read for books by Denis Waitley match your comment. I've not read any of them so will check them out.

Charles - I hope you're going to dig out that audio!

I haven't read the book but it is ordered. I'm amazed at how many positive reviews I've seen for this, but not only that and how close it is to my own teaching in that we have to find our core self and 'plug into our identity' (my words)

Thanks for this thread, just confirmed my beliefs

I have read the book and listened to the cassett program. However, I do not think it is the best self-development book ever. It is just my opinion. It is a very good self-development book if you apply the strategies.

Psycho-Cybernetics is certainly one of the best personal development books I've ever read. I really like the simple, down to earth approach Dr. Maltz uses in explaining his success/failure mechanism model.

Robert, I think your NLP and Hypnosis experience will enhance your ability to use the principles in the book, especially if you've gotten a good handle on using your submodalities to create imaginary experiences to pass along to your success mechanism.

I wouldn't say this is THE best personal development book, however, I think it's ONE of the best ever written.

    Hi Robert,

You're right on the button Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz is a self development classic. The title didn't have any negative associations at the time it was written. For those who would like a free pdf copy just click this link.

    Hello,

I first read Psycho-Cybernetics back in the '80s and I thought it was a classic then. I hesitate to say the "greatest" self development book, but if you're building a library then it's a must for your collection.

Robert I must say, the book enhances your vision and sharpness and given you a better focus on the probabilities. Now you can understand every aspect written in it clearly in the true sense. Do you imagine if you hadn't get years of NLP and Hypnosis experience behind, you could understand that much...!!!

Since buying Psycho-Cybernetics, I've also bought "Psycho-Cybernetics 2000" by Bobbe Sommer, so I'm kind of reading them in conjunction with one another.

The importance of the "self-image" is becoming apparent to me, as is how carefully I should choose what runs through my imagination -- I'm starting to really understand the phrase "We become what we think about".

There's a version called "The New Psycho-Cybernetics by Dan Kennedy and Maxwell Maltz" published in about 2002 or 2003. I haven't read it, so I can't tell you much about it.

Maltz's book is definitly a classic and deserves consideration as one of the truly great personal-dev books out there.

Another great book in the same vein is John Assaraf's: The Answer - it really benefits from more recent scientific discoveries.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[845074].message }}
      • Thanks for the tip about John Assaraf. I've seen some of his material and really like the way he combines the science with practical application. However, I've not read any of his books yet so I'll give it a try.

Regarding previous comments about the Dan Kennedy version. Personally I like the way he has updated and simplified the material but I know some people prefer the classic.

I believe Matt Furey may now own the rights and he also has added some valuable insight for current application.

        Best regards

I haven't read this, sounds interesting.

I have been reading in the personal development area for years.
And as a result have been able to made many positive changes in my life.

I've always been fascinated within the metaphysical area and the past two years I've been studying the works of Esther and Jerry Hicks, The Abraham Teachings.

I must say I've catapulted myself light years ahead of what I'd been able to previously achieve with a few hundred other books over the years. I am finding it all quite fascinating and intriguing.

I'm a fan of Psycho Cybernetics, probably on my top 5 when it comes to personal development stuff. I only have the Dan Kennedy version, but I don't see anything wrong with that, Dan is a pretty smart guy.

Might have to get an older version just to add to the library though!
